The room was beautiful - very peaceful and right next to the river which helped us to sleep each night (temperatures in Arbois in August were extremely high and as there was no 'air conditioning', the open window was the only way to keep the room cool). The location was perfect, being next to the main church, opposite the Tourist Information Office and within a 5-10 minute walk to all restaurants/bars, wineries and the Louis Pasteur House museum. Claire was so friendly and welcoming, offering suggestions for dining, without being intrusive - we felt as if we were part of the local community as we sat and had our breakfast on the terrace each morning. The standalone bath was really cool!
We were prepared for minimal catering facilities and so had brought our own coffee bags - and there are several boulangeries/patisseries in the town for breakfast. However, given the high temperatures, the only thing that would have improved the room would have been a small fridge that could be used to keep food/drinks cool during the day or a way of keeping ice frozen.

Les Volets Rouges is quite a unique place. Beautifully located in the heart of Arbois, tucked in down a small street behind the Church, it's a cleverly restored large room with an old-style bath as its centre-piece. The balcony overlooks the river and lovely old houses on the opposite bank. No meals are provided but there are loads of cafes, restaurants and shops close-by. The host is engaging and enthusiastic, she's a professional artist. It's one of the best Chambre d'Hotes we have stayed at. Arbois is the real deal, old, venerable, beautiful, la Belle France at its finest
The steps down to the room are a little on the steep side. Free parking is available at the Church car park. we were lucky to find a spot, but it's always busy.
