Pousada Castelo de Obidos

We stayed in a room in the castle walls, but not really in the older part of the castle, but the room was perfect. We had access to the castle that regular tourists would not have had. The room was modern and updated with air. The restaurant was fantastic. The hotel staff was outstanding. I highly recommend this pousda castle and will definitely return! Due to a festival and limited cars allowed into the medieval, we parked in Arcus Pastry and walked the mile up to the castle. The hotel did offer rides to the hotel, but we were unaware. We did take advantage of the ride from hotel back to the lot after our stay.

Would have liked to have seen an actual castle room, but we stayed technically in the castle.

The location couldn’t be better with wide sweeping views and such a historical well- kept property A staff member assisted with our arrival by driving us to where we could park our hire car. That was above and beyond 😃

Fire alarm went off twice, once in the early morning. Were told by one staff member it was just smoke from the kitchen and by another, someone smoking in one of the rooms. The concern was no one announced anything - just left guests to sort themselves! Dinner nothing to write home about and rather overpriced for the quality. Expected better A couple of staff members were great, but a couple of others we found surly

As part of any Portugal or Spain trip it is a “must” to experience a pousada (or posada in Spain) stay at least once. We have done this several times before in Spain - this was our first Portugal experience. The facilities, ambience and sense of history and grandeur in these hotels is definitely an experience worth splurging for at least once per trip. The Obidos Castelo pousada was definitely right in line with that expectation.

Parking is tricky but understandably so given the central castle location. Once you know this, pack a small day bag so no need to lug suitcases across difficult cobblestone slopes.

Phillip and Pietro in reception were welcoming and very helpful. The room was comfortable and the complimentary ginger liqueur and chocolate cup,, a specialty of Obidos, were fun to experience. Great to have hair conditioner which many places in Portugal don't have. We were traveling with a friend and were happy to be able to order room service which we ate in the courtyard outside her room. Great breakfast. My husband appreciated the selection of sausages while I loved the fresh fruit.

The pillows were all too hard and large. Wish there had been at least one small, soft pillow which would have been better for my neck

In order to fully appreciate the walled city of Óbidos, you really should stay in the Pousada, the reception was wonderful, and dining in the castle, where I had breakfast and dinner both days, was exceptional.

Initially I was disappointed with my small room, I booked the new wing instead of a castle room, but I was very comfortable anyway. It’s quite a challenge reaching the Pousada with a suitcase, since driving through the gates is tight, and then you must park outside anyway, although the staff did assist me in my departure.

The view and setting was stunning. Exclusive breakfast for hotel guests, away from the busy tourists, was an appreciated touch. Facilities were wonderful. Guilhermes was the best staff member with 5 star service.

Unfortunately our stay landed during an unexpected closure of the castle by the city that caused parking to be difficult. That did not affect much of our stay, but the staff did not handle communication of where and how to get to the hotel well. Everything was wonderful once we arrived.

Location is the best! Staying in castle is very atmosferic. Very clean. Breakfast was excellent! Dinner was very nice, a little pricy for its quality, but service was nice. View from castle walls was amazing! Hotel has private part of it were you can relax and have drink away from crowd.

I usually never complain about room size. But our room was too small! I understand that we are in Europe and castle is few hundreds years old. But there was not even single chair to sit. It didn't match pictures on Booking. Just be honest and may be make another room category with accurate description and adjusted price.

We loved our time at the castle, it was a unique and wonderful experience. We normally travel on a MUCH lower budget, but saved up specifically to stay in the tower room because we were so excited. Staying at the castle means you can access the private courtyard and interiors of the castle. The restaurant was also very good. Some of the reviews complained about the stairs, but this is a historic castle from centuries before elevators were invented so it comes with the territory. It would be a disservice to destroy the history and change the castle to add them. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They even carried our bags up the stairs to our rooms so we didn’t have to lug them up. Highly recommend this experience!

Parking was a bit rough, we got lucky and got a spot at the top of the hill near the castle. Not much the hotel management can do about the limited parking since the constraints are set by the the size of the mountain and the city’s regulations. When I went to the check in desk to ask where to park, they did tell us that if we don’t find a parking spot by the gate to call them to come grab our bags before we go further down so we didn’t have to carry them up the hill. You can also drive under the city gate to the front of the hotel to drop your bags off before you find parking. There is a sign above the city gate that says do not enter, but local traffic like in this case can enter as long as you don’t park there. The hotel knows their constraints and did their best to mitigate them.

The breakfast and dinner was very good. The service was excellent.

The website did not describe the rooms, nor did the website provide an address to enable GPS routing to the hotel. Actually, you have to walk 1/2 mile with bags and pay for remote parking of your car. When we arrived by foot they said "you can use to car, but you cannot park, only drop off bags. So we tried. The map was not navigable, the cobblestone roads were not safe to drive. All they have to do is advise as to where to part and how to arrange transport of bags to the hotel via taxi. We arranged taxi for departure and all was perfect.

Obidos is a wonderful walled city and this Pousada is built into the wall. The castle/ Pousada has great view points for fabulous views of the town and surrounding area. There are also charming sitting areas in the Pousada for morning coffee or afternoon beverages. Our room was very spacious with a comfortable bed. The windows in the room were small but totally part of the charm of staying in a castle. The breakfast had a very good selection of hot and cold items.
