The Volunteer Inn

The room was clean and well furnished, staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. If we are down that way again we would consider staying there again. Nice vibe in the pub, looks like a good selection of drinks. We didn't eat or drink there though. The staff were very kind to let us check in so early.

Only problems we had were that they seemed to have an issue with Booking.com as they didn't respond to any of our messages and couldn't see if we'd paid or not. So we rang them which was fine. And we had proof of payment on Booking.com. Their website says they serve breakfast on a Monday and that their kitchen is closed on a Monday so it would be good if they removed the bit about breakfast being served on Mondays. Two pretty minor things to be honest. Apart from that it was great.

The Volunteer is in an excellent position both for drivers and for those travelling by public transport. It’s just outside Grove on the main road from Wantage to Abingdon and Oxford and very close to the route to Didcot. The staff were superb, particularly a young woman called Vicky (I hope I have the correct name!) who welcomed me and was there one other evening. All other staff were just as friendly, accommodating but still professional, an excellent mix. I also had a superb quality shower and a generous sized en suite bathroom which was a pleasant surprise.

I would have liked to be asked if I’d like breakfast in the morning. I wasn’t even made aware of the serving times and so unfortunately missed what looked like a very tasty full English Breakfast.

Loved the owners! I felt like I met some new friends. I was made to feel so welcome and we had some great conversations. This was my favorite of the other two places in which I had stayed. Thank you so much for such a wonderful stay! I felt sad when I left because you were so wonderful to me!

Our room was perfect for our stay. We didn’t have much time due to work but Georgina was extremely helpful and caring on arrival. Room 5 had a lovely feel and calming colours. Very cosy and so comfortable - bed especially, with lots of space inside and a smart laminate effect in bathroom. Plenty of tea / coffee also. Thank you!

Very friendly staff, comfortable modern room, clean bathroom. Good range of beers, happy to give us food options for order in, as well as bringing in from Just Eat, as food only served at lunchtimes. Free parking.

Is a shame they don't do food on an evening, but knew in advance.

Needed a room for an overnight stay visiting Williams F1 on business. Couldn't have been more perfect. Clean room easy to access. Tea & Coffee a TV and really good shower. Didn't sample breakfast because it was served at the business meeting.

Only minor negative was the busy road during a heatwave but it didn't disturb me and it's not noticeable with the window closed.

Breakfast was available and it was very close to the middle of Wantage where dinner was available. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. It was very close to everything I wanted to see.

The stairs were narrow and steep but that cannot be helped.

The bartender is a great guy. In the evening, the place has a lot of locals coming for a quick drink. Rooms are small but functional and clean. There are just 5 rooms. Free coffer and tea.

Some road noise come into the room

Breakfast was superb. The Abingdon bitter on tap was far better than the beer we tried in Wantage. The room was exceedingly comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities plus little chocolates. Will stay there again. The staff were very welcoming and friendly.

Received a warm welcome from Georgina and the staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Room was lovely and clean, bed very comfy and the glazing and curtains cut out the noise from the road. Breakfast - scrambled egg on toast- was beautifully cooked and plenty of it. Good value for money

First night some of the pub customers left a bit to be desired regarding their language and noise - but heck, we were all young once!
