Ireland’s Achille Island: A Photo Essay

by John Gadbois

Achille Island is the largest island in Ireland, located in County Mayo in the west of Ireland. My wife and I took a trip here during the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in April.  We took our rental car around a circuit called the Atlantic Drive, and were rewarded with some absolutely stunning views.

A view on the approach to the Atlantic Drive.

A look at Achille Island as we approached it.

Near the western edge of Achille Island, a look back at the village of Dooagh.

Approaching Keem Beach, a gorgeous beach surrounded by mountains on the far west side of Achille Island.

The view from Keem Beach.

A view of the Atlantic from Achille Island. These sheep were literally all over the mountain.

The road leading to Keem beach. These roads were all very narrow and steep, making it a little scary at times, but the views were worth it.
