Thon Hotel Kirkenes

Good hotel, always clean and staff friendly and helpful. Great central location and nice tea and coffee available throughout the day. We had to make 3 bookings to cover our stay but hotel good and let us keep same room throughout.

Conflicting information about breakfast on red day. Reception staff stated 11am but head chef cleared food away from 10:15 am saying breakfast was only until 10am. Breakfast fruit selection varies from day to day with poor selection on several days but good cooked selection but could be hotter. Very expensive for keeping room later as charged for day rate rather than per hour.

Great location, staff very helpful and hotel always clean and tidy. Breakfast selection improved throughout stay particularly addressing the initial poor selection of fruit. Good variety of hot and cold food and tea and coffee choices. We had a late flight out and hotel very accommodating with a late check out which they provided. We opted for superior room with sea view as stayed many times before so we know we like this type of room. Spacious with all necessary amenities, complimentary toiletries provided and cleaning standard very good by Lin. Comfy beds but can get a bit warm.

Only real problem was the mis- communication regarding breakfast on their red day. Reception said until 11am but head chef insisting 10am. Initially a poor selection of fresh fruit but this improved during our stay.

The hotel was in a great location right on the fiord. Reception area was bright and airy, staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was ready when we booked in at 1, nice room with great view. Bathroom had heated floor and the room had space for suitcases as well as an iron and ironing board in a clever little cupboard. Breakfast was the best selection I have seen in a hotel, lovely fresh fruit, bread and salads.Good gluten free section too with a separate toaster. Hot breakfast was plentiful and freshly made and a really good lot of choices. Dinner was delicious, especially the king crab.

Not much. Housekeeping was well done, room was clean and linen was good quality. Maybe if there had been a better selection of tea bags and some fresh milk but I'm being picky by saying this. It really was an excellent stay.

This is the best hotel I have ever stayed in Europe. Extraordinary breakfast buffet with varieties, free coffee and tea throughout the day. Very nice and helpful staff. It is almost at the front of the sea and can be viewed the northern lights easily. From the breakfast area, there is very impressive panoramic view to Fjords and sea. From the hotel bed room you may request for ocean view, which is recommended. There is a kettle and tea in each room. Room was very clean. The restaurant in the Thon Hotel is very good. They serve vegetables, fresh fish/crabs and meat! The sightseeing tour bus stops here in front of Thon Hotel. I will come back again. I recommend everybody to try this hotel for a visit!

This is a 4* Hotel offering the standards you expect in Norway. Sparkling clean, comfortable room with at least one English channel, abundant and various breakfast, good restaurant, professional staff, splendid location. It is a perfect option for a night before or after cruise. I have noticed that despite very good reviews, Thon Hotels don't get high scores(both in Bergen and Kirkenes). Definitely this Hotel deserves a higher score than 8.6.

There should be more toiletries in the bathroom.

In the hope of a better chance of seeing the Northern Lights, we used this hotel 3 days prior to catching the Hurtigruten 6-day southbound coastal cruise to Bergen. The hotel had a great location, fab comfortable room. Free coffee in the reception. Great dinner in the evening with always, very friendly staff in the restaurant & reception. Breakfast was superb. A super stay very close to the town centre & the few interesting attraction Kirkenes has to offer. Sadly only a very minimal sighting of the lights. Unseasonable warm during our stay in November with virtually no snow. A great stay at the Thon.

Very good location overlooking the water, with lovely deck area for drinks or relaxing Coach transfer available to nearby Hurtigruten cruise or to airport. Walking distance to main town area and attractions Room good size and bed comfortable Excellent breakfast buffet and restaurant for evening dining.

No option to self regulate air conditioning and as day temperature was about 26-27 degrees C, room did become rather hot and stuffy

The view from the room was great (4th floor), able to follow the sun downing / midnight sun travel on the sky and see the 'Hurtigruten' arriving in the fjord. Window could be open to take pictures of the seal swimming below one of the nights, and for fresh air. Freshly squeezed orange juice was on offer (self serve), otherwise a very good selection of just about everything you may want for breakfast, including a lovely locally made cheese (Pasvik). A fairly spacious room and bathroom, refrigerator, tea/coffee facilities, good bed, and chair, however only one.... loved the elegant use of colors, well balanced, but getting away from the boring white and grey only... Parking for free, walking distance to see and do the Kirkenes town including the Border Museum (the latter is a fairly long walk). And if you are here when the roads to Pasvik and Grense Jakobselv are open and you have access to a car, you are very much recommended to drive to each of the places, and do the walk in Pasvik to 'Treriksrøysa' (worth it despite some three dimensional roads, and potentially wet walk - some places water level may reach way above your ankles across the wetlands). All the activities has to take place on the right side of the border, of course. Bugøynes is also worth a visit.

The room seemed to be big enough to include two, not just one, armchairs for comfortably seating for both guests. Reading light next to/over the bed should preferably be placed high enough to be used when sitting in the bed reading, since not enough chairs (nor reading light for the dark season) outside the bed for two...

The location is ideal. The breakfast is outstanding and the king crab is exceptional.

So this hotel is idealy placed right on the edge of the water with a large beautiful terrace overlooking the sea. On a 20 km radius around Kirkenes there is no better place to see the northern lights. However, the management decided that it would be a good idea to place light projectors all over the place, in addition to the 2 powerful street lights right in front, thus destroying all possibilities of a potential good photo shoot of the beautiful auroras. I think these people are so used to the northern lights that they dont realise some of us travel half way around the world to see them (clearely). I have never seen such a waste of a good opportunity as this. Hint: most places in the world known for their dark skies and good asrtonomical viewings use dark light projectors if needed.

Excellent hotel for a very small town. Great view over Kirkenes Bay. Very quiet. Conveninet location at the edge of town, about a 20-minute walk from the Hutigruten/ Havila ferry terminal, and the Airport Express bus stops in front of the hotel, timed to meet the twice-daily flight to Oslo (cost 150 NOK). And great buffet breakfast!
