This hotel is magnificent! We were immediately pleased walking into the lovely, spacious lobby, greeted by a very friendly staff member, who explained the facilities to us. Our room was beautifully decorated, with a comfotable bed, chairs and tables, and a separate sitting area with a sofa. The bathroom was also spacious and very nice. In addition, there's an interesting and inviting library with a number of seating areas and game tables. Each floor also has beautiful seating spaces. Breakfast each day was a delight as well. The concierge staff were extremely helpful, beyond what we would have expected. We would happily stay in this hotel whenever possible.

Not one thing, as everything was wonderful!

The Hotel has created a characterful place to enjoy your stay. Excellent location close to the Town and the funicular railway. Lovely variety of restaurants all within easy walking distance. Amazed at just how interesting the Hospital Ship was. A special mention must be made for Rui Braga. He helped me charge the car when the charging point outside was found to be unavailable to me. Thanks Rui, you're a star.

A little chaotic when busy, always asking for bowls or glasses. The biggest negative was how dark the breakfast room was. Perfect for intimate evening leisure but not breakfast. Although nothing to do with the Hotel, the charging point outside is not available on an International credit card.

The hotel is beautifully restored with such care and attention to detail. From the moment that you arrive the service is excellent. The staff were friendly and professional but particular compliments to the concierge who was excellent - warm, welcoming, attentive, kind. He enhanced our experience. The hotel happily stored our bicycles in a secure location and the concierge worked to ensure that we had all that we needed. Check in was seamless. The bedrooms were beautiful, very comfortable and clean. The breakfast service was top notch, again a very professional and attentive staff taking care of service. I will most certainly come back again and would happily recommend to anyone visiting. Excellent experience.

The only reservation we had was that the pool was not clean and the spa was not working.

My wife and I stayed in the Casa Melo Alvim in Viana do Castelo for one night during a holiday in Portugal. Apparently, the hotel is in the oldest surviving urban manor house in the city, dating back to the 16th century, so it has many interesting old features in its 20 rooms. It is a relatively short walk to the historical city centre. There is an underground car park next to the hotel, although you can unload your suitcases outside the hotel. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a 4-poster bed. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast was good.

The hot water system was rather slow and it was impossible to run a bath, as the plug leaked.

Fantastic welcome …. beautiful location and wonderful breakfast. From the moment we arrived after a very long walk on the Camino, we were made feel so welcome by the lovely Gentleman on reception. He was one of the kindest and sweetest Portuguese people we met on our trip. Breakfast was fabulous and they even organised to have it earlier for us as we had an early start. We had the most delicious fresh fruit, bacon, eggs, pastries etc and couldn’t fault it. Would highly recommend

The mattress on the bed was a bit hard

The hotel deserves its good ratings. Bags of character in a historic building in the centre of a delightful town. Good quality buffet style breakfast, too. Free public parking doesn't seem to exist but the hotel offers a special rate in a high end underground car park a few yards away (10 Euros/day at the time of writing).

Others mentioned creaky wooden floors and poor soundproofing. This can't be denied. For us the only negative was the hard, uncomfortable mattress which creaked every time you turned.

Very centrally located, right by the station but very quiet inside. Gorgeous historic features such as stone staircases and high ceilings. Good sized bathroom. The buffet breakfast was very good, with a variety of fresh products and cooked options. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is useful underground parking in nearby car park, although you have to pay for it. Our room was huge with a carved ceiling and views across the street.

The vibe is quite formal and old fashioned but we are oldies so we didn’t mind! There is a little swimming pool but the weather wasn’t warm enough for us to use it.

Great location for this stylish hotel. Old building converted with taste. Nice touch of mid century design furniture in the Nordic tradition... Hans Wegner would be feeling right at home.! Good bed and big bathroom. Has an elevator..!

There was a smell , which I could not locate...maybe the train station next door...? Breakfast was good, but the room..which is also the restaurant was quite noisy, due to all the hard surfaces... every time a chair moved, it echoed through the room.

The location was perfect. It was a beautiful boutique hotel, which was the oldest house in the area.it had a lot of character. The staff were all wonderful and friendly. It was beside a shopping mall and the train station, but you did not hear the noise. Parking was easy.

The bed we had was not comfortable, but other rooms had different beds, so i should have asked to change rooms.

Wonderful hotel in a perfect location. Everything was fabulous. The breakfast was incredible. The staff are beyond helpful. I'm hiking the Camino and originally booked 2 nights. I added a 3rd night after spending 1 night there.

The card for my room that you use for electricity could be replaced. I actually think the key and card should be on separate rings to avoid problems. The card I had was a little bent and sometime tricky to use.
