The host Pierre was very charming and helpful. The property has been in his family for generations and the decor and history of the house adds to the overall experience of being in the ancient town of Le Puy en Velay. Not often you can get the chance to stay in such a property. The town itself is fabulous, check out Notre Dame Cathedral, St Michel on the Mount Chapel, the renovated statue of Virgin Mary - even if you are not religious, the history and views are very interesting - and much better than Troyes in every way, our next destination. The breakfast was in a beautiful room in the lower part of the building, with lots of artworks etc. Very relaxing. This is an ancient property, with decor and furnishings to compliment but has wifi, Netflix etc should you want - but go outside!!!

Not a dislike but beware of the narrow streets and one way systems in the old town. Low profile cars - be careful! Not a complaint and it goes with the territory of the town but you need your wits about you! The host however gives good directions and ample parking choices.

Superb host who went out his way to get us to the accommodation whilst a race was taking part in the town which meant most of the roads were closed! Brilliant location and beautiful room in a medieval house with original. stone spiral staircase! Huge room with secret bathroom!

For us breakfast was a little disappointing inasmuch as there were no plates and we had to eat on a napkin which when eating croissants and bread with butter and jam is difficult but appreciate that we are in France.

This was simply the most amazing place in France in which I have ever stayed. To start with the building dated from the 15th Century and was one of the oldest buildings in a most historic town. It is located close to the Cathedral from which commences the path to Santiago de Compostella, one of the oldest Christian pilgrimages. The battered front door to the house gives no hint as to the wonders within, but be prepared to climb a very original stone spiral staircase. This leads to several levels of reception areas from which extend the comfortable en-suite bedrooms. On the lowest floor there is a dining area, where a more than adequate breakfast is served. Close by are several good restaurants and bistros. Pierre will advise and also tell you about his home and the extraordinary tasks he had to perform to produce this exceptional Chambre d’Hotes.

By way of a slight warning, the windows, shutters, blinds and curtains are in keeping with the rest of the building and need some explanation as to how to use them to best effect. If you travel with a car, negotiating the medieval cobbled streets can be tricky, but Pierre dose have a private car park

An absolute gem. Pierre welcomes you warmly into his extraordinary place. Soulful, steeped in history and oozing with character, it is beautifully appointed. Beds are hugely comfortable, great restaurants are just a few steps down the cobbled street (but book early!) and Puy-en-Velay is a magical destination.

Our room (suite) was very clean and spacious. The bed was very comfortable and the welcoming gentle music instantly puts you at ease. Property was full of character, charming and quirky. It is Pierre’s family home and he explained that it is one of the oldest buildings in Le Puy. Location in the old town is perfect. Netflix was a bonus.

There was nothing we didn’t like. We had too much luggage and lugging it up and down the ancient stone spiral staircase wasn’t great fun. We knew this might be an issue from reading previous reviews but we chose character over convenience. It is a small price to pay. Pierre (host) was most helpful.

The location is beautiful. This place to stay is quite unique. Our room was very comfortable with a lovely shower room . The added net curtain around the bed was such a brilliant idea in the warm weather so windows could be open for fresh air leaving you restful sleep not worrying bugs would be kept at bay!

This place has great character, just be prepared to climb many stairs! Don't bring heavy bags to take up and down to your room.

Wonderful ambience in this historic house. The rooms are beautiful, individually and tastefully furnished, and a divinely comfortable bed. Peaceful, perfect location, especially with the adventurous drive up into the historic centre! A charming and welcoming host, and excellent continental breakfast.

Nothing! It was perfect for us, a special overnight place to stay en route south, giving us the ideal point from which to explore Le Puy. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Very friendly welcome from the owner. Fascinating building with so much history. Beautiful spacious room. Breakfast was kept fairly simple with pastries, bread and preserves, yoghurt, fruit juice, tea and coffee - this was perfect for us though!

Fantastic old building in the heart of the old town, within walking distance of several good restaurants. Our room was huge with a bed and large sofa. The ensuite bathroom had a vaulted ceiling. Breakfast was fresh bread, croissant or pain au chocolate, juice, lovely jam and butter and choice of hot drink. Pierre was very welcoming and recommended good restaurants.

Not much wrong, other than internet only television,

We had a lovely large room overlooking a courtyard. Beautifully furnished . Good bathroom and shower. Despite being in the centre it was very quiet. Pierre was very helpful and gave us his parking space. Close to good restaurants . We had a good breakfast to set us on the way home.
