Very clean compared to the surrounding area. Room was small, cozy, and felt historical.
Parking is on the street and the area doesn’t feel very safe although we didn’t have any problems. The door to the room didn’t open or close unless you forced it to. No extra toilet paper in the room. We called down at 4:00am upon discovery and were told to come down and get it ourselves. We didn’t and thankfully someone brought us some about an hour later.

Inconsistent presentation. The last day two opened loaves were laid on the table where the plexiglass pastry container had been. Coffee quality was not good.
Door lock on room did not lock. We paid for upgraded King room but we’re moved to a smaller room. We asked to move back after repair and to be contacted. There was no contact and after asking we were told maintenance did not show up. After asking a second time. we told the lock could not be be repaired.

Love all the old floors, fireplaces, light fixtures, high ceilings etc. We thought the merging of the old with new - such as bathroom was well done. Really nice to be by the river and bridge. People at the desk are exceptionally nice.
It would be nice to have a small refrigerator. There is a great terrace overlooking the river, but it needs some attention. (weeding, potted plants and maybe a couple umbrella tables)

Perfect location, friendly staff, beautiful historic old hotel. The meal there on Friday night was very nice and service great!
Continental breakfast was really nothing. No milk, no juice, no coffee, no cereal, no milk. Had to go to the back and find someone to bring a cup of coffee and some orange juice. Not up to the standards of the rest of the visit.

The location is excellent. Our room had a fantastic view of the Pettus Bridge and Alabama River. The interior courtyard was beautiful. The history is interesting and rich. The hotel was very clean, and the staff was especially attentive and friendly. The towels are awesome. Brass fixtures in bathroom were elegant. The bed was comfortable.
No refrigerator and microwave in room. There was also a large, red stain on our carpet.

Locational was amazing -- 1837 building was right on the riverbank with views of the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Staff super friendly and knowledgeable about local history, ESPECIALLY SHONDRELL who answered all our questions about the area. Restaurant was good, lucky because nothing else in the neighborhood was open on a Monday night.
Dim lighting in the rooms, night-time train whistles in room facing Water Ave.

I didn't order the breakfast, but booking.com charged me for it anyway. I even told the clerk that at check-in, but there was nothing she could do about it. The room was great, the renovation has been very well done. The hotel is surrounded by empty buildings. It may be a flag planted around which to revive the city, but so far that hasn't happened.

The St James is a beautiful hotel in such an important location in American history, near the Edmund Pettus bridge. All the staff we interacted with (front desk, housekeeping, bartender, server) were warm, friendly and professional. The courtyard is gorgeous and relaxing. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the food and drinks were fantastic!

The hotel is beautiful and in a fantastic location. the staff was excellent.
There was not adequate food supply or service. At breakfast, coffee and food ran out and was either not replaced or there was a long wait.

Restaurant & bar food offering was good. Friendly staff. Old world charm
The hotel is a little tired and some areas need a refurb but the is probably a reflection of Selma itself
