How to Not Be an Asshole American

How to Not Be an Asshole American

Updated August 2, 2023

As a disclaimer, let me just say that I love the United States and I am proud to be a US citizen. However, some US tourists can really make other travelers look bad. You may wonder why other countries hold such hostilities, but I can assure you, they sometimes have their reasons. Some of them are government related and thus out of our control, but there are plenty of things you can avoid doing to keep yourself free of the “Asshole American” label.

  1. Stop Claiming America

Yeah, I know, saying you are American is easy and widely understood but that doesn’t make it correct. America includes 2 continents and around 35 countries. Stop humming that horrible “Proud to be an American” song and give all the other countries some respect.

  1. Learn a Language

Okay, not everyone has the time or talent to become fluent in another language, but at least learn some basics. Don’t be that tourist that runs up to people saying “DOES ANYONE SPEAK ENGLISH?!” and gets pissed when the menu isn’t bilingual. Oh, and for the love of God, stop yelling. I don’t know why people believe that more volume=better comprehension, but it doesn’t. You just look and sound like a total ass.

  1. Forget the Word “Wrong”

They drive on the wrong side of the road. The shake with the wrong hands. Their daily routine is all wrong. Get over over yourself and your customs. It’s not wrong, it’s just unfamiliar to you. Get interested in the cultural differences instead of criticizing them.

  1. Stop Flashing the Benjamins

Chances are, your money is worth more where you are traveling, but try to be discreet about it. Don’t rub your dollars in the faces of locals – have some respect. Plus, waving your green in front of everyone just makes you a target for muggers. Oh, and while you’re at it, try to spend your money at locally owned business whenever possible. Let the locals benefit from your beneficial exchange rate.

  1. Quit Acting So Entitled

Being from one of the most powerful countries in the world does not entitle you to be an asshole. Also, stop bragging about how powerful your country is- keep in mind that the US government has done some not-so-nice things to many countries around the world. The embassy may be around to back you up in serious emergencies, but that doesn’t mean you have a get out of jail free card. Respect the local laws and customs. You could get yourself arrested and put in a foreign jail, or just look like a total dick. Either way, not good.
