It has been a devastating start to the New Year for many Central and Western Queenslanders and Fraser Island's close knit community sends thoughts and prayers to those in flood-affected regions.

QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA – It has been a devastating start to the New Year for many Central and Western Queenslanders and Fraser Island’s close knit community sends thoughts and prayers to those in flood-affected regions.

The closest major flooding to the Fraser Coast and Fraser Island is in Bundaberg, which is one-and-a-half hours drive north from Hervey Bay. Roads from Brisbane (in the south) to Hervey Bay and into Rainbow Beach are open; but travellers planning journeys north to Bundaberg, and beyond, are advised to check road condition reports prior to travel.

Kingfisher Bay Resort Group General Manager of Tours and Marine, David Hay, said guests and staff had steadfastly refused to let Queensland’s unpredictable weather dampen spirits on the lee side of Fraser Island.

“The rain that we’ve had in region has firmed up the sand tracks on Fraser Island and they’re promising some good four-wheel-driving for visitors,” he said. “There are a few spots on the eastern side of the island (Kingfisher Bay Resort is on the sheltered, western side) that have been eroded or water is over the tracks – but it’s definitely business as usual for us and our tour buses are out as normal.”

“Yesterday our resorts guests were poolside enjoying the sun – taking a dip in the water and exploring the World Heritage surrounds,” he said. “And out on a self-drive or guided tours guests were taking full advantage of the four-wheel-drive conditions on compact sand tracks.”

Mr Hay said that today, despite weather forecasts to the contrary, it was overcast, warm and perfect for outdoor activities.

GREAT SANDY NATIONAL PARK – FRASER ISLAND

Fraser Island’s Great Sandy National park is open, with visitors able to access the island’s western side, eastern beach and inland tracks. For four-wheel-drivers the bypass from Indian Heads to Champagne Pools has some deep holes with water.

The Queensland Parks Service is advising guests to avoid this particular area. For National Park access information and Fraser Island condition reports:

http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks/fraser/index.html

EURONG BEACH RESORT (eastern side of Fraser Island)

It is business as normal on Fraser Island’s beach side with reports of scattered showers and no wind on the eastern beach. Fisherfolk are out in force on the Eastern Beach enjoying conditions.

FRASER EXPLORER TOURS AND COOL DINGO TOURS

Fraser Explorer Ranger-guided tours from Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach and Eurong Beach Resort and Cool Dingos Tours from Kingfisher Bay Resort are operating as normal and are visiting Eastern Beach sites as scheduled. Lake McKenzie is as popular as ever, as the spot to cool off on a warm day.

FRASER ISLAND FERRY AND BARGES

Barges to Wanggoolba Creek, Inskip, Kingfisher Bay Resort and Moon Point are operating as normal. http://www.fraserislandferry.com.au/

SANTA BARBARA, CA-Nov. 23, 2010 — Visual Travel Tours (VTT) today announced a collaboration with the Santa Barbara Partners in Education to provide an array of worldwide adventures that expand a curriculum without leaving the classroom. Teachers can take their students on virtual field trips with VTT, an innovative online source of professional multimedia tours purposely created for viewing on cell phones, iPods, PDAs, tablets, and computers.

For a fraction of the cost of a field trip, teachers and students can experience important world locations and be introduced to topics that help bring history alive in the classroom.

“Learning is enhanced when kids can visit historical sites and see where events took place,” said Michelle Magnusson, Santa Barbara County Education Office. Marie Profant, Founder of VTT explains, “As educators transition from e-learning to m-learning, the use of new media delivers a new level of student engagement. VTT makes it easy to bring the real world into the classroom and expose children to different regions and different ways of living.”

Visual Travel Tours are professionally produced and created by writers with experience in each region. Every tour describes a location in detail and shares its history using an array of images in either QuietGuideT (text+images) or with narration in video format.

Profant, a long time manager of leading-edge systems, adds “VTT is excited to introduce a new resource for teachers. We have produced nearly 200 titles that are appropriate for the classroom and for after-school programs, as well as the world traveler. We are proud to be invited to introduce virtual tours to educators as part of Santa Barbara’s Partners in Education. Using a school’s computer lab or via any available mobile device, this is the best way to explore both local routes and foreign locations. Teachers can encourage students to investigate their own backyard as well as select a foreign location to learn about history and share intriguing facts with their class. ”

VTT tours ideal for teaching include, and are not limited to:
. Ancient Egypt: take students on a tour of the Pyramids and the Sphinx
. Medieval History: travel through medieval times visiting Dublin or Barcelona
. Ancient Japan: visit Osaka and learn about Japanese tradition
. California: understand Mining History and the establishment of Missions via La Purisima
. US Immigration: traverse Angel Island in San Francisco Bay
. America’s National Parks: watch wildlife and visit national landmarks.
. The Holocaust: experience Nazi Germany through a tour of Dachau or Munich
. The founding of America: stroll through Colonial Williamsburg
. And take students to a wide variety of cities across the globe.

Schools may contact admin@visualtraveltours.com to learn how to initiate their own Virtual Field Trips.

VTT’s mission is to enrich a traveler’s experience by using evolving technology, providing more than traditional audio walking tours and offering local experts opportunities to share their expertise and collect royalties. The tours can be used to preview a destination, as a guide, and as a memento. Travel writing expert and Executive Editor Gordon Burgett has spent the past several months communicating with guides and writers around the world, ushering them through the company’s online manual, “Provider Island” and its unique on-line tour submission process. Mr. Burgett is joined by a team of seasoned experts, from publishers to audio/video producers. The company is based in Santa Barbara, California. If you want to understand America, you have to connect the dots.” With a trilogy of acclaimed books about his exploration of life lessons in small-town America, Herzog has done just that.

Herzog’s latest adventure is TURN LEFT AT THE TROJAN HORSE: A Would-be Hero’s American Odyssey (Citadel Press, 2010). Described as “On the Road” meets “Eat, Pray, Love,” it is a cross-country excursion in the spirit of the ancient journey of King Odysseus. But instead of a voyage home to Ithaka following the Trojan War, this would-be hero is making his way toward his alma mater in Ithaca, New York. With middle age bearing down on him and a college reunion on his agenda, Herzog takes stock: How has he measured up to his youthful aspirations? What constitutes a life well-lived? In this day and age, what makes a hero?

To answer those classic questions, Herzog crafts an itinerary taking him through classically-named places – from Athena (Oregon) to Apollo (Pennsylvania). Starting in the shadow of Washington’s Mount Olympus, Herzog makes his way eastward, delving into his own psyche and the lives of everyday heroes along the way. He meets a teacher in a rural one-room schoolhouse in Troy (Oregon), a lifelong hobo in Iliad (Montana), a bomb-diffusing soldier from Sparta (Wisconsin) and an 87-year-old paragon of reliability in Pandora (Ohio).

However, in the end it is simply the story of one man trying to find his way. Says Herzog, who has also published hundreds of national magazine articles and a series of children’s books, “My goal was to make it intimate yet epic, accessible yet enlightening. To me, that’s the definition of a memorable road trip.”

In his first travel memoir, States of Mind (John F. Blair, 1999), he and his wife spent nearly a year on the road in a Winnebago, searching for virtue in places like Pride (Alabama), Wisdom (Montana) and Honor (Michigan). In 2000, it was named one of the ten outstanding books from small publishers and reached #2 on the Amazon.com bestseller list after the author’s appearances on “The Today Show” and “Oprah.” Herzog’s follow-up travelogue, Small World (Pocket Book, 2004), a trek from London (Wisconsin) and Paris (Kentucky) to Moscow (Maine) and Mecca (California), was chosen by Lonely Planet as one of eight travel literature classics, along with books by Jack Kerouac and John Steinbeck.

On September 29, 2010, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis, St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital, McDonald’s Corporation, McDonald’s Owner/Operators, and the local St. Louis community will gather to commemorate the grand opening of the third Ronald McDonald House in Metro St. Louis and the 300th Ronald McDonald House in the world. The ceremony and ribbon cutting will be held on the campus of St. John’s Mercy Medical Center at 11 a.m.

When a child is critically sick or injured – facing cancer, heart disease and more –important to the child’s recovery is having their family nearby for support. In addition, when families live hundreds of miles away from the hospital that offers their child the best treatment, they need a place to stay to be close to their child.

“This is a tremendous milestone for the entire Ronald McDonald House Charities organization and for our local Chapter as well,” said Dan Harbaugh, president of RMHC of Metro St. Louis. “We are so thankful to all of our generous donors and supporters who ensured we can help more families have access to the quality health care their children need and help them focus on what is most important – facing the weight of an illness, together, as a family.”

“When our very first Ronald McDonald House was built in 1974, no one could’ve imagined that one day, we might open another – let alone 300 of them. The 300th House in the world, and the third for RMHC of Metro St. Louis, is a testament of the commitment and support of the local Chapter, deep relationships with the medical community and the generous support of the staff, volunteers, and individual and corporate donors,” said Marty Coyne, president and CEO, RMHC. “Just like the 299 Houses before it, this House will ensure families have more than a place to stay, but also a place to find strength – emotionally, physically, and spiritually – as they focus on healing their children who are receiving medical treatment at West County hospitals.”

This $4.5 million Ronald McDonald House was made possible by lead gifts from St. John’s Mercy and the St. Louis McDonald’s Co-Op and other generous contributors. The project is contracted by Kadean Construction, designed by Gray Design Group, and financed through UMB.

“McDonald’s and our St. Louis franchisees remain committed to helping families and supporting the Ronald McDonald House provides us a unique avenue to strengthen families when they are dealing with incredible hardship,” said Cassie Nelson, general manager, vice president of McDonald’s Heartland Region. “The communities in and around St. Louis, along with our many McDonald’s customers, have always been incredibly supportive of RMHC and that makes us extremely proud and honored to have the 300th Ronald McDonald House built right here.”

RMHC received a $900,000 challenge grant lead gift from the J.E. and L.E Mabee Foundation. Other major donors include Ameren UE; Anheuser-Busch Companies; Cash’s Scrap Metal and Iron; The Dana Brown Charitable Trust, U.S. Bank, Trustee; Edward Jones; Emerson; Mississippi Lime Company; Packaging Concepts, Inc.; Prairie Farms Dairy; Rent One; Souers Family Trust; Southwest Airlines; and UMB. In-kind donors of $10,000 or more include: Ahal Contracting Company; Allworx Corporation; AT&T; Broyhill Furniture; Bussen Quarry; Charter Communications; The Coca-Cola Company; Viki Diedrich and Dad (Frank Ginsberg); Intermetro Industries Corporation; JS Express; La-Z-Boy; Modern Business Interiors; Rothman Furniture Stores, Inc.; Spellman-Brady & Company; Taylor Company; Tempur-Pedic; and USG. Additionally, certain project costs have been underwritten by the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Neighborhood Assistance Program.

RMHC of Metro St. Louis has been a cornerstone of the St. Louis community for more than 29 years. Since 1981, the St. Louis Ronald McDonald House has served as a “home-away-from-home” to more than 30,000 families of seriously-ill children. In addition, three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms have provided comfort and care to more than 10,000 families of pediatric inpatients at St. Louis hospitals, since 2005. The House provides a comfortable bed, warm meals, hot showers, and a network of families who share a similar burden of having a seriously-ill child. Ronald McDonald Family Rooms provide many of these same comforts within the hospital walls.

Families are only asked to make a donation of $5 per night, but no family is ever turned away based on their ability to pay. More than 40% of the families who call the Ronald McDonald House home are unable to afford to pay $5 because of mounting medical bills and other expenses. The average stay for families is ten days; however, some families stay for months or even up to a year.
The following declaration can be found on www.keepfearalive.com:

“America, the Greatest Country God ever gave Man, was built on three bedrock principles: Freedom. Liberty. And Fear – that someone might take our Freedom and Liberty. But now, there are dark, optimistic forces trying to take away our Fear – forces with salt and pepper hair and way more Emmys than they need. They want to replace our Fear with reason. But never forget – “Reason” is just one letter away from “Treason.” Coincidence? Reasonable people would say it is, but America can’t afford to take that chance. So join The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. on October 30th for the “March to Keep Fear Alive”(TM) in Washington DC. Pack an overnight bag with five extra sets of underwear – you’re going to need them. Because, to Restore Truthiness we must always… Shh!!! What’s that sound?! I think there’s someone behind you! Run!”

Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 16, 2010

Traveling overseas at a young age supports school performance, leads to successful careers and increases the likelihood of continued travel throughout one’s life, according to a survey in support of the launch of Educational Travel Week. The survey, The Impact of Early Travel Experiences, jointly endorsed by the Student Youth & Travel Association (SYTA) and Explorica, a company creating educational tours that connect students to new cultures, languages and people through educational travel, reveals the positive impact that early travel experiences have on personal and professional accomplishments and travel trends during adulthood.

Trend expert Daniel Levine, director of The Avant-Guide Institute, will lead a live chat on Thursday, September 16 at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern) to discuss survey results and trends. The chat will take place at http://www.educationaltravelweek.com; participants will then click the “Live Chat” tab to join. A highly-acclaimed speaker on the subject of travel, Levine has addressed the World Travel Market, Tourism Futures and The New York Times Travel Conference, and will be the opening keynote speaker at the 2010 World Youth & Student Travel Conference conference in Beijing. Levine began his career serving the student and youth travel market, researching and writing the legendary guidebook Europe on $50-a-Day and nine other best-selling travel books, including Frommer’s guides to California, Florida, London and Italy.

Educational Travel Week celebrates the transformational experience marked by exploring new destinations, cultures and ideas. The goal of the Impact of Early Travel Experiences survey was to gain a better understanding of the learning inherent in travel and the resulting life enhancement as a result. Educational travel is a sector of tourism increasingly recognized as an important way to connect teachers and students to new cultures, languages and people globally.

“By increasing awareness of the educational and cultural benefits of student and youth travel, we can further explore the long-term effects of experiential travel and support the important efforts of reputable youth travel service providers,” said SYTA President Patrick Connor.

The survey revealed three primary themes:

•Those who travel abroad before the age of 18 achieve academic and professional success.

•The majority of individuals that participated in youth travel directly credit their travel experiences as positively impacting their education and career.

•Youth travel increases the frequency of travel as an adult, as well as an increase in the number of destinations explored.

Higher Education and Careers
The survey revealed that more than 88 percent of respondents that traveled before the age of 18 received a college degree, with more than a quarter of respondents going on to receive an advanced degree. Respondents also were high performers in school, achieving impressive college grade point averages (GPAs). More than 81 percent of respondents achieved a college GPA greater of 3.0 or higher, with more than 40 percent completing college with a GPA greater than 3.6.

These achievements are not limited to educational excellence. Half of the survey respondents who traveled before the age of 18 reported a household income of more than $75K, and almost a third boasted a household income of more than $100K.

Thank You Youth Travel
Survey respondents were asked to share the lasting impact of their travel abroad experiences. Local culture immersion provided the most lasting impact according to respondents, and almost three-quarters of these respondents credit their travel experiences with positively impacting their education and career. In fact, more than 90 percent of respondents report a willingness to participate in an educational travel experience again as an adult.

While it is not surprising that more than 50 percent of respondents portray their youth travel experiences as “fun,” it is notable that 40 percent of respondents report their youth travel is best described as “engaging.”

Travel Often and Travel Far
The survey also revealed that youth travel heavily impacts travel behavior in adulthood. Survey respondents that traveled outside North America before the age of 18 continue this trend as adults. In fact, more than 43 percent of youth travelers have visited at least ten countries outside of North America, with almost 90 percent traveling to non-English speaking destinations. Travel is considered so important to these respondents, that more than 70 percent report spending at least $2,000 each year on travel, with one out of four respondents spending more than $5,000 annually.

“At Explorica, we believe that educational experiences can be found wherever and whenever you travel,” said Olle Olsson, Explorica’s Founder and President. “Travel is about the learning inherent in the experience. We build our educational travel programs so teachers can apply classroom learning to real-world experiences. Educational Travel Week is a way for all those involved in travel as a teaching tool – educators, students and parents – to celebrate the richness of all travel experiences.”

Educational Travel Week
Release of the survey marks the celebration of Explorica’s Educational Travel Week. Other Educational Travel Week activities include video and photo contests that offer a chance to win two free tickets to Europe or the opportunity to win a $500 restaurants.com gift card, culturally-specific Facebook quizzes on favorite travel destinations and more.

Conducted in August/September 2010, the survey polled North American travelers over the age of 21 who had taken a trip abroad – whether through a school-sponsored tour, a family trip or other independent travel – before the age of 18.

About Explorica, Inc.
Founded in 2000, Explorica Educational Travel creates educational tours that connect students to new cultures, languages and people. Through Explorica’s use of exclusive online tools, they help teachers create tours uniquely suited to provide both the best value and the most customized, authentic tour experiences.
Though best known for organizing relief missions on horseback to some of India’s remotest desert communities, Relief Riders International (RRI) has created a way for even stay-at-home volunteers to help fight hunger in these regions: the Give a Goat program.

Through the program, anyone can donate a live goat-whose milk and cheese provide a steady food source for dozens of villagers-for the nominal cost of $75. According to UNICEF 48% of children in India under the age of 5 are suffering from malnutrition. A single goat can go a long way to helping a family.

Though the donations can be made all year round, the holiday season, when RRI is gearing up for its annual relief rides (in December, January, and February) is an especially good time to give. It is during these relief rides that the donated goats are presented to villagers in Rajasthan.

“It’s extraordinary to see what a huge difference a single goat can make in these communities,” says RRI’s founder and Executive Director, Alexander Souri. “Each goat we deliver can produce enough food to feed a family. It’s very humbling to see how gratefully these gifts of sustenance are received.”

For those who would like to ring in the New Year by directly participating in the relief mission and personally hand over goats to people who can really use them for sustenance, more information can be found on the RRI website www.reliefridersinternational.com.

Relief Riders International’s award-winning relief rides combine adventure travel and humanitarian aid, and have been featured in magazines including Outside, Forbes, National Geographic Adventure, and O-The Oprah Magazine.

RRI brings together Indian medical staff with teams of riders -paying volunteer participants who ride rare Marwari horses through the Rajasthan desert- to bring much needed relief to isolated rural villages. Along the way, Riders visit ancient temples and forts, spot exotic bird and animal life, and take part in traditional cultural celebrations, they stay in comfortable tented encampments and dine on freshly prepared local cuisine.

The organization’s 2011 relief rides are scheduled for the following dates:

-December 28, 2010 -January 12, 2011

-January 25-February 7, 2011

-February 23-March 9, 2011

Those who cannot make it to India over the holiday period but would like to help, information about donations can be found on the Give a Goat program page www.reliefridersinternational.com/goat.htm
