Your Vacation is Whatever & Wherever You Want it to Be

Updated August 2, 2023

The word “vacation” brings up certain thoughts and ideas in the minds of those who hear it, but these thoughts might not be the same for each person. Let’s take a look at how the Merriam Webster dictionary defines vacation:

va·ca·tion

noun, often attributive \v?-?k?-sh?n, v?-\

Definition of VACATION

1: a respite or a time of respite from something : intermission

2

a : a scheduled period during which activity (as of a court or school) is suspended

b : a period of exemption from work granted to an employee

3: a period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation <had a restful vacation at the beach>

4: an act or an instance of vacating

Not bad, but I’d like to make some edits.

a scheduled period during which activity (as of a court or school) is suspended”

No. This is not good enough. I refuse to accept that zero obligatory action equals an actual vacation.

“a period of exemption from work granted to an employee”

Closer, but still no. Taking off time for work is a good start, but that does not make it a vacation. You need to go somewhere, do something and follow the other two definitions that are much more to my liking:

“a respite or a time of respite from something”

“a period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation \had a restful vacation at the beach”

YES.

I’d like to add one more:

The act of going wherever you want and doing whatever you want and recharging yourself.

If you want a beach vacation – take it. If you prefer trekking in the mountains – lace up the boots and hike away. If you want to zip around a big city on buses and trains – go for it. It is your vacation and you can go and do whatever you want – just get going.
