We stayed 3 nights and during this time enjoyed this B&B for all it had to offer. Our accommodation was very comfortable with a wonderful duvet, air conditioning, and a sizable room and bathroom. Our host Maurice took care of the room every day. Every morning as we left our room, we were greeted with the wonderful smell of baked croissants, which Maurice prepares as part of a sumptuous breakfast. Entering the breakfast room is a treat for the senses, with a grand table setting, background music, and many breakfast choices. I counted at least 6-8 kinds of jams, over 12 varieties of nuts, nut butters, granolas, cereals, dried fruits and more. Breads, fruit, cheeses, hard-boiled eggs, meats, juices…what a delightful smorgasbord! There is also the option to take breakfast on an outdoor patio surrounded by plants and flowers. Maurice helped us with free street parking about a 5-minute walk to the B&B. He also made suggestions that enhanced our visit. He has invested his heart and soul into this B&B and it shows. We would stay here again!

A treasure of an ancient building on the cobbled thoroughfare of the old part of Chinon. Our arrival was quite dramatic as we were instructed to drop off our bags then park the car. This entailed driving along pedestrian street, with bike carrier on back holding two bikes, quite a feat. We had arranged to park in garage of Maurice, and my husband misunderstood the instructions, in French, about where to proceed after drop off. Catastrophe was averted when I returned to the house and Maurice led us through cobbled alleys to the garage. Huge thanks. Maurice is a larger than life character who seems to run his impeccable guest house single handed. Our room was in the attic, approached by around 40 twisty stairs. It was furnished to the highest standard, super deep mattress, quality bedding, tasteful furnishings, sitting area, lobby with fridge outside with cold drinks, teas etc. The breakfast must be the very best in France! We had been touring for 3 weeks so can write with authority. It would take a chapter to describe the delights which were on offer, served at a huge communal table which was laid up as one might expect a special evening meal, accompanied to background French music. Nothing at all was any trouble for this host who clearly loved his work and enjoyed sharing his home with all who passed his door. He booked the Michelin restaurant opposite for us ahead of our stay. Without hesitation, go there.

I cannot imagine a negative reply….

This is one of the finest places we have ever stayed! The location is perfectly situatee in the old town area close to the historic church of St Maurice, so a perfect place for sightseeing and yet quiet too. We were able to park our vehicle in a secure compound overnight for a few euros and Maurice helped us with our luggage on arriving. The entrance lobby and splendour of this historic building is just beautiful. It really does create a 'wow factor' response on stepping inside! Our room was sensational also, cleverly designed to maintain its period character and made us feel like we had stepped back in time to a charming era. Everything about the accommodation was of the highest standard and the attention to detail was evident everywhere. Maurice is a tremendous host also, and his culinary skills were evident at breakfast the following morning too, befitting of the extraordinarily high standard he provides to guests. The breakfast room was an array of foods on offer, all displayed with care and attention and dining in the elegant courtyard was just perfect! This place is very special and deservedly meets the highest ratings possible in every single aspect. We will definitely stay here again if we are in the area A place of outstanding excellence! Thank you to Maurice!!

We were greeted by Maurice and he took us up to our room, explaining how things worked. The bedroom was huge with an exceptional ensuite (stand alone bath as well as shower). The room was quiet and the bed comfy. The buffet breakfast was laid out in the beautiful dining room and we had the choice of either eating inside or out in the enclosed courtyard. I have never seen such a magnificent spread for breakfast all of which looked delicious (there was such a range of food I could not have possibly tried it all!). Maurice is a great host, he made us feel very welcome in his home.

Nothing!

Gorgeous decoration, furniture and settings, paying tribute to a delicate taste of French culture. Also, when you drink coffee - or tea - you do it from a coffee- or tea-pot, not from a coin machine... Beautiful room, beautiful building from the XVIIth century. A warm reception and a most helpful host. The breakfast was remarkable from a French viewpoint. From an American viewpoint, it lacked a few things (for exaqmple, only hard-boiled eggs were displayed, although if we had asked, I am quite definite qe could have got fried eggs) but it had so many different ones (delicious cakes of different types and flavours, etc.), all served in beautiful ancient plates, a plasure fro the eyes as well as for the food and the decor (paintings, engravings, etc.).

There is no elevator : To be fair, XVIIth century buildings hardly offer such a facility... Also, you have to park your car in a closely situated street, though there is no difficulty in finding slots where to park.

What a special place and how I wish we had booked to stay longer. Maurice the owner was lovely and made us very welcome. The house dates from 13th century and Maurice has renovated to a very high standard. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated in keeping with with the history of the building and with a glimpse of the chateau from the window and a view along the medieval streets. The bathroom was spacious with bath and big walk on shower. The breakfast was exceptional with different breads, jams croissant, crepes, fruit, cold meats, eggs, sausage, yogurt, cereal, freshly squeezed juices of different kinds and we were able to eat in the beautiful courtyard where the tables settings were worthy of a picture.

There was nothing not to like

A beautiful well maintained and recently renovated house in the centre of Chinon We were welcomed by Maurice who could not have been more friendly , courteous and efficient. Nothing was any trouble and he took pride in his home with every attention to detail . The bathrooms and bedrooms were wonderful, clean , white bed linen and exceptionally comfortable Breakfast was incredible! Cereal , pastries, savoury, and sweet freshly made pastries This is somewhere to return to ! Thankyou

Difficult to get car close to unload but follow the instructions - use the riverside road. Pedestrian zone Maurice helped to direct us to his garage once we arrived

Maurice was really helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. We loved the restoration he had done on the house. It was a beautiful blend of old and new. The staircase was like one you'd see at a chateau but made with a beautiful wood rather than stone. The bed was the most comfortable we've slept in -better than our own at home. The bathroom was modern with a great shower and yet it fitted well with the historical feel of the rest of the accommodation. The location couldn't have been better; just below the castle. As everyone else has said, the breakfast was superb, with everything you could wish for. We only stayed one night but wished we had stayed for two. Chinon was more interesting than we thought.

Au Relais St Maurice is a gem! Imagine staying in a B&B that feels like you have booked a chateau. We were greeted by the owner Maurice, and the delicious aroma of baked cinnamon apples from his kitchen. He has done a brilliant job of creating an elegant old world home with all the modern conveniences of a top notch hotel. Our room was spacious and beautifully appointed with french antiques. The bathroom felt like a spa experience with a huge walk-in shower, separate deep claw-foot tub, linen bathrobes and superb lighting. The dining room is absolutely gorgeous and breakfast every morning had many choices and was delicious. Maurice treats his guests like royalty. We stayed for 4 nights and did not want to leave. The pickiest purveyor of B&B's would have a hard time finding fault.

A note of caution: The property is in the heart of the old town which is a bit of a distance from the train station, and Chinon cab drivers are non-existent! So if arriving by train, be sure to let Maurice know your train arrival time.

Everything! This was our second visit to Au Relais Saint Maurice after our first one in 2018. We made a point to particularly drop by in Chinon this time so that we could stay at this warm home of Maurice once again :) The property was very well maintained and bed & amenities so comfortable. Maurice was helpful, friendly, and attentive to every detail to ensure our stay was perfect. The rooms (chambers) had everything we needed, and were extremely clean. They were kept warm the entire night despite the cold winter - unlike some places we had been to previously. The breakfast was amazing (as expected) with a wide array of choices from homemade croissant, baked apple, bread, and brownies to cold cuts, salmon and cheeses, to name a few. The breakfast setting was impressive, warm, and cozy. We could tell how much passion Maurice has put into his home. We loved everything about this place - location, hospitality, comfort, ambience, and all the charm it had to offer. We’ll be back again for our third time!!
