Hotel Neu Schloss Otaru

Oh my goodness this place was a dream. The staff were incredible, the food was superb and the VIEW. I was literally almost moved to tears watching the sunrise over the ocean in the open air bath. Yes, the decor is a little dated but you get a taste of luxury for half the price you would somewhere else, so I certainly didn't mind. It has a sort of old world charm a la Grand Budapest Hotel I actually quite liked. Not to mention Otaru is a beautiful town. The two days I spent here would have made the trip to Japan worth it on their own.

Not a complaint so much as a warning- it sits on top of a hill -which is 1000% worth it for the views- and in winter the snow is very deep. If you have limited mobility you'll be reliant on the courtesy shuttle or your own car to get in or out as walking in the snow would be almost impossible.

-the room is perfect, quite cozy and spacious for a private spring spa inside the room -snow view from the window in the morning -heater working well -great shampoo and shower gel products -shuttle bus

-wondering if they could serve japanese food instead of western food in the restaurant -it was forbidden to wear flip flop to the restaurant and the staff did not mention it at the reception. it was awkward -no small convenience store inside the hotel when it is located on a mountain -the shuttle bus drivers are generally friendly but there was one driver who was very pissed the while time, i was scared

We booked an ocean-front room, but were upgraded upon arrival to a suite on the top floor. That was a welcome surprise, and we took full advantage of the views and private onsen bath. The staff do not speak much English, but they were very attentive and accommodating to my requests. A very good Japanese-style breakfast buffet was served.

The decor is certainly outdated, but the views and the experience of arriving at the hotel more than make up for this.

The private Onsen with ocean view was a absolute highlight. The room was really spacious, the beds were comfy and and the bathroom was nice too.

The interior is very "old school" you could say, which isn't really my style. In general the furniture is pretty old. Also there was an issue with the shower in out room, there was only hot water, which made showering pretty much impossible.

The private onsen bath inside the room is great. Fantastic view overlooking the ocean.

The furniture in the room is a bit old.You may say vintage if you like European style.But it's clean. The in-room private onsen bath overlooking the Pacific Ocean makes it up.

It was located at the top of a hill with a great view of the sea and cliffs. The hot water bath was nice and warm although it is not onsen water.

Furnishings were a bit dated and dusty. Bed had a mattress protector that was quite lumpy. It was quite a distance to drive from town to the hotel, so it's really for guests who wants to stay away from the city centre. Dinner was good but breakfast wasn't great.

Wonderful breakfast. They track which day of your stay and changed the menu accordingly. Glad breakfast was part of the stay, as the food, view and service was above expectation. If ever in Otaru, will stay there again!

Lobby had a strange smell. Maybe they just need to install extractor fans in the right place.

My room with the ocean view was fantastic. The private bath facing the ocean was so amazing. Meals were great with a wonderful staff. Desk staff were also helpful and courteous. Really great stay. Shuttle to train station was an additional amenity I greatly appreciated.

Did not care for the breakfast. The room was clean and the onsen in the room and public one was excellent. The scenery was wonderful. The free shuttle was also appreciated

The location of the hotel is a bit far from the center of the city which made it inconvenient

The spa bath in the room with the view and the window opening is just magic. Worth the stay just for this. We had a king room which was nice and large and the bed was so huge and comfy. The restaurant food was also exceptional.
