Bang in the middle of the charming town of Bergues is Au Tonnelier. I have stayed here off and on for some twenty years and it hardly changes. Certainly it still represents a good French standard of a serious town centre hotel, comfortable, well run, good restaurant, excellent staff. As usual, I was given a room up in the eaves; in this case in the well converted annexe adjoining the main building. Lovely shower with loads of hot water and a good nights sleep. Remember, this is the centre of town, so the local 'alarm clock' goes off at seven sharp; the church, which is opposite, is most punctual with it's bells! Fortunately they silence the pretty carrillion for the night. As a motorcyclist I was most appreciative of the offer of secure parking for my machine. Au Tonnellier serves a great breakfast, hot dishes, cold cuts, pastries and all. Well Done!

The shower is not a walk-in and the bath is dangerously slippery. As a lone traveller of some 75 years, this has to be treated with great caution.

Very nice hotel in an excellent location. Good parking. Good Wi-Fi. Fantastic bed. Spacious bathroom with plentiful hot water. Nice public spaces, restaurant, bar, breakfast room. Staff very nice and helpful. We had a problem with our bathroom heater, which turned out to be our fault, it was dealt with promptly ( they even gave us an extra heater).

Be aware, we had a comfort double room in an annexe. Beautiful building but 50 meters away from main building I.e. restaurant, bar, breakfast room. You have to go outside to get from one building to the other. Not a problem for us though.

This is the second time we’ve stayed at this hotel whilst cycling in North France with friends and family. The hotel is lovely inside with very comfortable rooms and great bathrooms which all seem to have been recently upgraded. Excellent staff who were very friendly and helpful with looking after our bikes. Felt lovely and French and the evening meal and breakfast was good too. Would recommend.

Nothing - was great.

We stayed two nichts in Bergues and had a lovely stay at the hotel. The room was nicely decorated and the bed was very comfy. We had breakfast twice and spent one nice evening at the restaurant. The hotel is perfectly situated and you can discover Bergues by foot. Both hotel and the village are definitely worth the journey. Last but not least, the hotel staff was very welcoming! Thank you very much.

My second time staying here, it's a lovely hotel in Bergues. The location is next to a church with parking and a short 5 minute walk to the town square. The hotel is ideal for a stopover for the ferry. Bergues itself is a lovely historic town with bars and restaurants. The hotel has a nice bar and restaurant. As a solo traveller (this time) the rooms are great with a generous amount of space and a nice bathroom. Bed is really comfy. Everything was clean. Highly recommended hotel.

This is a lovely old hotel in a quiet location in the centre of the town. We were in a subsidiary building a few yards from the main hotel. Our room was old but with very modern touches such as electric blinds. The shower was excellent and the bed very comfortable. We ate dinner and breakfast in the hotel. Both meals were excellent and the breakfast was one of the best we have experienced in France. There was scrambled eggs, delicious bacon and sausage plus a wide range of cold meats, hard-boiled eggs, breads, cakes etc. The home-made yogurt was gorgeous along with the fruit salad. I ended the meal, with the most delicious chocolate cake. Believe me, the food here is superb and the staff are lovely.

We had booked parking but our Landrover Discovery could not get through the garage door into the parking area behind the hotel because the road was too narrow to get the right angle and the door kept descending before we were able to enter. Thankfully there were some parking spaces outside the hotel but, had this been the high season and not October, we might have had a problem. I would have liked some rugs on the bedroom floor which was bare wood.

September 2022

We stayed here before in June on a short trip to Rouen and were very happy to stay again in September at the end of a 17 day car trip down to the Pyrennees and back. Bergues is a handsome and compact little town with everything you need for a short stay - and only 20 mins from the Dunkirk ferry. Au Tonnelier is right in the centre, with easy parking. The rooms are very comfortable, with quality fittings and comfortable beds. We had room 36 (again) which is in the older, quieter block ... not very big, but a lovely view of the church, whose bells are very tuneful in the moprnings (no, they don't ring at nights ...!). Recommended ... and also Le Bruegel, an ancient and friendly brasserie/restaurant down by the canal - be advised though, book ahead!

The room was very nicely furnished and well maintained. The beds were very comfortable and the shower was good. The location was very convenient as a break between the UK and Germany and the town it is situated in seems really nice. We got a parking spot directly outside of the hotel but I could imagine you might have to park somewhere else in the town if the hotel was really busy. The staff were very helpful and provided us drinks and nuts in the lobby even though the bar was closed.

Nothing about the hotel. There was a small rock concert happening opposite the hotel when we stayed (which we enjoyed watching) but it was a little loud until around 10:30pm. Not the fault of the hotel and we slept completely fine even with the music.

Lovely large clean rooms, great shower, comfortable bed and pillows. Good view, electrically controlled blinds from bed. Bottled water on arrival in room and also coffee/ tea. Very quiet at night, great sleep. Free on street parking right in front of the hotel. Friendly staff, fantastic, immaculately decorated bar area.

Bar closed at 9pm.

The hotel is a very good place to stay in Bergues, it's only a 20 minute drive to/from the Dunkirk Ferry Terminal. The hotel is in a nice quiet location opposite a church with free street parking and paid secure parking if you desire. The staff are very friendly and helpful. - I was travelling solo and my room was perfect, nice and quiet with a comfortable bed and large bathroom. - Room etc was very clean. - There is a nice restaurant at the hotel where I enjoyed an evening meal. - It is only a 5 minute walk to the centre of Bergues where there is a nice square, bars and cafes. The town is nice to walk around. Everything was very good and excellent value for money, I would stay again.
