The grounds of the property are beautiful, and it’s a fantastic experience to stay in a traditional Japanese room with tatami mats. We really came for the food and it didn’t disappoint! Really spectacular, and the dining area is really lovely too. The location is good - we walked to Mt Kintoki and hiked to the top to view Mt. Fuji.

Reaching the property is quite hard - either bus or expensive taxi. Then to get the bus back the other way to the train station is really impossible as everyone is checking out at the same time and the bus is so packed, you have to wait for the next one (an hour later!). I know this can’t be helped by the hotel, but perhaps a shuttle service (paid for by guest of course), for ease of reaching the hotel. I also think the guest bathrooms could use an update.

Lovely (and spacious) traditional Japanese rooms, welcoming and extremely polite staff, mind blowing food, superb onsen (both indoor and outdoor), great location accessible by either car or public transport, great base for excursions to the lake and rope way plus many museums around and 7-eleven within walking distance.

The location was quite more far than i have expected, but it also helped me enjoy the nature. The breakfast was awesome and the open air bath was incredible. I would definitely visit this place to enjoy the private open air bath again.

Everything was so amazing but The checkout time(10am) is quite earlier than expected.

The stay was rejuvenating and relaxing. We felt pampered and very cared for to have an incredible view of the garden with waterfall right outside our balcony. The onsen both indoor and outdoor was wonderful to sink into in the evening. We did not choose the dinner option but the breakfast was beautiful in its Japanese presentation and taste also with a view of the garden. The grounds and garden are beautiful, especially the koi in the ponds. The elderly woman who brought us to our room and welcomed us with a treat and tea was a delight. Although more traditional in feeling and ambiance, I was happy to discover it had the most outlets for phones out of any hotel we stayed at in Japan. I liked the fact that if you got up earlier or later than your partner, you can use the sliding screen to block off the bedroom from the sitting area. The futons laid out at night were very comfortable and clean. The bathroom toiletries felt luxurious. Service was helpful throughout.

I found the front reception of men a bit intimidating and formal upon arrival. The reception area did not feel like a place to relax or gather or wait but just for checking in only. It would be nice if the indoor and outdoor hot onsen were immediately adjoining without having to wear something and walk through the corridor. Perfect for adults seeking rest and relaxation but perhaps too quiet for families or young adults.

The room and the view from the terrace were both just beautiful. The room was spacious and comfortable. We loved sleeping on the futon on the tatami floor. The service was exceptional. It was lovely to have the same server greet us in our room with hot tea and snacks, and then later, serve us dinner, and breakfast the next morning. We did the private onsen , which was well worth it. The Dinner and the breakfast we’re both exceptional. Delicious food, and plenty of it. They told us breakfast would be about 30 minutes, but we easily could have lingered for an hour just enjoying a slow meal with so many varied things to taste. The bedding was very comfortable, although the only downside was that the 10 or so inches of fluffy down in the comforter could easily have kept me warm in a 30° temperature, but the room with the windows open overnight only got down to about 60. We did, however, love sleeping to the sound of the running stream out our window.

We arrived by bus and the bus stop is just outside so very convenient. Although the bus from ... was really crowded. Get to the bus early to get a seat because it’s a 1-hour ride and our bus was crammed full of people. It goes every half hour so if the first is full get the next. The hotel has a beautiful Japanese garden out front. I mean so beautiful! With a carp pond and a small bamboo grove. The sakura was blooming and it was magical. The hotel main building was nice and felt calm and understatedly luxurious, if a little dated. The staff was very attentive when we arrived and helped us with everything. There is a pervasive smell of sulphur but that is to be expected for the area and can't really be helped. It didn't bother us. We stayed in a traditional room with a private open air onsen. The room was spacious and beautifully decorated. I think it was in the older part of the building, so the bathroom was a little dated but again, it was still lovely. And it provided all amenities we could need. I'd have loved to have seen the new buildings though and if I go again, I’d make sure to book one of them with private onsen. But for our part the room was lovely and large and the private onsen was amazing, looking over the little garden. We had our kaiseki dinner served in the room from a kind lady. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. Couldn't have asked for more. Breakfast was also served in the room, and was again beautifully presented and a traditional Japanese breakfast. The open onsens (non private) we're nice, although you have to walk between the indoor and open air onsen. So, you have to leave the indoor one and walk further down the corridor to find the open-air ones. But the private onsen in the room was the star of the show for sure.

No real complaints. We had a fantastic time. Some might find the time restrictions a little constraining. Dinner is served at a certain time (you get a few options to choose from) and breakfast is also served at certain, where they will come 30 minutes before to clear away the futon beds. But for us it was a great experience. The Japanese breakfast was also a little difficult for us. A bit too much food so early, but still fun to try

We stayed in the Annex, in a traditional tatami room with a private in-room onsen. The property is peaceful and serene, and the staff are truly exceptional. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the in-room onsen was an amazing amenity to have. We loved the breakfast and dinners - the hotel easily accommodated our dietary restrictions, and the meals were both aesthetically beautiful and absolutely delicious.

The hotel is extremely old - while this helps provide the traditional ambiance and the rooms have been renovated and updated, there are some signs of age. We noticed the bathrooms were a bit dark, and saw that some of the wallpaper in the restrooms was coming off (not surprising, given the high humidity and proximity to the hot springs).

The location was great. The property had a great atmosphere and was very clean and relatively well maintained. The staff were attentive and very helpful.

It’s an old property that’s showing its age. It’s a bit rough if you look closely. On a very personal level, it was disappointing that properly-fitting yukatas are not available for larger people, but we sort of expected that. The general manager (or the person who seemed to be the general manager) isn’t the most personable of people. I found the fact that he communicated with guests through his employees, even though we were all in the lobby together, off-putting. We chucked it to being part of the experience of a traditional ryokan.

This is a traditional Japanese accommodation (ryokan) and should be chosen with that in mind. The service is careful and attentive and traditional robes are worn. There are open air and indoor baths (onsen) for men and women which are accessible throughout the day at one's leisure and are wonderful. There are also private baths that we did not reserve. The meals were masterfully presented traditional Japanese food (one should not expect Western-style). The gardens with meandering paths are also beautifully manicured and peaceful. One could easily stay here a few nights just relaxing or take day trips around the rest of Hakone as well. The furnishings and construction is not new, but I don't consider this a negative point - the hotel by name itself has been aroudn for generations, after all. The bus to get there can be extremely crowded and one should carefully plan how much luggage to bring or arrange for additional luggage transportation if this will be an issue.

Perhaps some renovations, as the wear and tear in areas are past merely aging charm. The room smelled strongly of fish products, probably from the kitchen below, as did our clothing left in the room during the day. I guess if you’re used to this, it’d be OK. There was also supposed to be a lounge/bar that was never open. We were also left with a room service/wine menu but no instructions with how to order anything.

Loved everything about this ryokan! Even my mother, who's in her early 60's loved it. Definitely the highlight of our Japan trip. The location of the ryokan is a bit further out from the busy touristy areas near Gora, but it was great because it was so peaceful and quiet. The garden was also very beautiful and quite big (took us about 45 min at a leisure stroll while taking many pictures). The private open air hot spring was great and very soothing. The food was excellent. The sashimi was very fresh and the roast beef melted in our mouths. The presentation of the food was so beautiful. This was our 4th day of our Japan trip and the meals we had here were the only ones my mother finished completely. We were stuffed after every meal, but finished everything since it was so good. As an Asian American who eats rice almost daily and is very particular about plain white rice, even the rice was so good. It was cooked perfectly. We stayed in the main building. The facilities are a bit dated, but we still thought it was clean. It has a traditional look and feel to it, which is what we wanted. Some reviews on this site mentioned a strong pickle smell, but we didn't smell it at all. They were burning some incense and maybe wood? that might've covered the smell, but we didn't mind it at all. It was quite nice actually. The staff was also excellent and every moment was memorable. Overall, this was an exceptional experience and would highly recommend it! My picky mother also gives it a two thumbs up 👍 👍

Nothing to dislike!
