Check in and out were smooth, owners were helpful and attentive. Half our group stayed in a Japanese-style room and other half in a Western room (both with private toilets). Both were very comfortable, well heated and clean. Would honestly recommend the Japanese tatami room as it was very spacious and a unique experience. Coming back after a long day of skiing and sitting in the onsen fed by a natural spring was a lifesaver for sore muscles! Beware if your room doesn't have a shower you will have to use the public Japanese-style (seated, not private) showers near the onsen, but you can book a private slot from 3-4pm or 8-9pm if you're shy. Hearty breakfast every morning including a wide range of options, savoury and sweet. Hotel is walking distance to everywhere in town, and there is a free shuttle stop nearby if you don't want to walk to the ski lifts with your gear. Many restaurants around, had no trouble getting seated (especially around 8pm) even though it was peak season. Ski hire shop conveniently located across the road, for which you can get a discount from the hotel.
Beware there is no lift, so if you are staying on the higher floors you will have to take suitcases upstairs. Ski gear can be left in the drying rooms on the lower floor. Drying room heating isn't on 24/7 (would be so expensive to heat such a huge space!) but is turned on from the afternoon when people come back from the slopes and overnight. If you have very wet gloves/clothes might be worth bringing them to your room overnight and hanging them in front of your heater.

Our stay at Hotel Myosen was exceptional. We loved the breakfast each morning, the quiet building, comfortable beds and most of all the natural mineral water onsen. Soaking after a day of skiing was a treat. The staff was very helpful with directions to get there and also helped us ship our giant ski bags onward. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay and would recommend Myosen to anyone.
There isn’t much I can think of to dislike. The services provided at Myosen were great, and matched well to the laid back vibe of Akakura Onsen.

Hotel Myosen is probably more of a backpackers setup but it suited me and my group of friends well! Just don't expect Hotel service, but for the price and location we were stoked! We all shared the traditional tatami room, it was pretty cosy like a big sleep over but we are a close group of friends and enjoyed it! The onsen was amazing and we loved using if after riding all day, the location is unbeatable and was the main attraction for our group including the affordable price.
We messaged ahead to ask about making reservations at restaurants in advance so we didn't miss out and were told not to worry but once we arrived we found out that reservations at most of the places in town are necessary so definantly book ahead for restaurants if you want to avoid walking around in the cold!

Location is great. We stayed in a premium room and it is well worth the money, excellent room! Our first night we stayed in a traditional room and while it was a bit dated, we enjoyed one of the best sleeps during our months travels in Japan! Onsen is also a little dated but it’s clean and has everything you need after a day out on the slopes.
A little out dated but toilet paper in shared bathrooms could be better quality.

Traditional tatami may rooms are very clean and roomy and a great experience. Futon beds are as comfortable as a western bed. The breakfast is fantastic. Easy walk to all restaurants.
If you stay in traditional room, the only shower is in the onsen so you have to be comfortable with the lack of privacy

Had a great stay here while enjoying snowboarding in Myoko. The location was great, close to the main street with a lot of food options to take advantage of (recommend making a booking if you can). The onsen was a great way to relax, with private bookings available - noting that the showers are located within the onsen so for a private shower it is recommended to make a booking. Breakfast was amazing - bacon, eggs, sausages and mushrooms as well as cereal and porridge plus more. The room was sufficient in size for three people, but I think you would struggle trying to fit more than three. Overall, a great trip and place to stay!

I've had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Myosen multiple times and it never disappoints. The owner, Susan, is a gem and always goes out of her way to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. The rooms are consistently clean and cozy, offering a unique Japanese-style accommodation experience that might be different from what one is used to in western hotels, especially in ski areas. Keep in mind that shower, bathroom, and toilet facilities are generally shared. In addition to the great amenities, Hotel Myosen is also excellently located just off the Main Street. It's an easy walk to the Akakura Onsen ski area and busses, making it a convenient choice for those looking to hit the slopes without having to worry about transportation. Personally, I love staying in the Japanese Ryokan-style rooms with futons - they're surprisingly comfortable and perfect for winding down after a day on the slopes. Overall, Hotel Myosen is a great choice for those looking for a cozy and authentic Japanese hotel experience.

Once we got settled in, we liked the private onsen booking feature so that we could, as a family, bathe together. The breakfast selection was really great and we all slept super soundly in our tatami room. Very good base for a ski holiday.
The property needs a bit of maintenance. It's an older property so there seems to be a lot to keep up with. Also, the vending machine was out of order.

The location is excellent, staff were lovely, comfiest futon mattresses, breakfast at the hotel was great.
Not being able to shower between 3-4pm due to private bookings. Bit difficult as the only showers in the hotel are within the onsens which aren’t open during this time.

Loved the Japanese Tatami room, it was spacious and adequate room to store all our bits and pieces. I was a bit unsure about sharing a shower / toilet etc but if you don’t indulge in the Hotel Onsen every night you’re missing out! The Onsen is a great way to recover from a big day on the slopes. So a private bathroom / toilet a bit overrated in a country where Onsens are so prevalent. The staff; Susan and Nick are attentive and always ready to help with info, loved the casual atmosphere and we met great people there that we ended up skiing with and dining with during our stay.
Its a very practical, well facilitated Hotel - if you’re looking for 5-Star fine dining etc this isn’t the place but if you want good atmosphere, the ability to meet & mingle with other travellers, this is a good place to start.
