Location near University is advantage if you have some of duties there. Also, the breakfast was fantastic and I felt safe in this hotel.
One night, in the neighborhood near the hotel there was shot guns exchange, broken glass sound and bomb exploded. It didn't affect my stay on anyway, but it was uncomfortable to hear and see these scenes through the window. The streets near the hotel look safe during the daylight, but be careful during the night. Before travel, I prepared myself for unsafe environment and I expected these situations, so it didn't affect me too much.

Greetings fellow travellers, We had a rather pleasant stay at the Bristol. The location was decent, but you probably will require an Uber to get out of the local area. There are several supermarkets that are close by, our favourite was EPA which had a large range of goods. The room was spacious and clean, with a wardrobe to hang your clothes. There was also a safe that we didn't use., the shower powerful with decent pressure and temperature. Though if you have longer hair it might take you a while to wash it thoroughly. Breakfast had a good variety and a nice way to start the day. Eggs were soft and delicious, as was the fruit options. There was also a bread and cheese selection. WiFi was good and the signal never dropped. If you're up for a walk, you can visit a beautiful lake that's around a 40 minutes walk away. There will be a refreshing coconut waiting for you from several vendors. If you're a gringo don't pay more than 8 reais. The staff were friendly. I would recommend this hotel if you are wanting to stay in Pampulha. We did get this with around a 40% discount. I'm not sure if I would pay full price.
The only negative for the room we occupied was that the air conditioning unit was too close to the bed. Above it, so if left on over night you could wake up to a sore throat. An extra pillow or two would also be better for more comfort.
