Grand Hotel Salsomaggiore

The room was immaculate and the bed fairly comfortable. The staff assisted us with a change in our stay, in getting some clothes laundered, and in calling a taxi for our trip back to the train station. They were friendly and cheerful throughout. The bartenders were gracious regarding my not-so-great Italian. The quality of the beer and wine was excellent, and we enjoyed the small bar snacks served alongside. The breakfast was outstanding -- a huge selection including eggs, bacon, Parma ham, cheese, light sandwiches, fresh fruit, and more. Although the pastries weren't quite as good as what you can get at any pasticceria nearby, the made-to-order cappuccino more than made up for it. Finally, the price of our room included 1.5 hours each day to use the European water treatments set up in their downstairs spa area. Massages, pedicures, skin treatments, etc., are extra. For those wondering what to expect, you schedule a time to use the water treatment facility in advance by calling the spa. A towel and headcap are supplied at the spa. Wear your swimsuit, bring a robe and slippers, and use the provided showers before using the facilities. These include a small, warm whirlpool which uses the mineral waters of Salsomaggiore, a larger warm saltwater swimming pool, two saunas at different heat levels, aromatherapy warm & cool shower sprays, a Turkish steam room, an ice-water bucket shower, a massaging whirlpool (also slightly warm), and a wading pool which has one knee deep lane with cold water and another with hot. Finally, there are two Himalayan salt rooms with lounge chairs, one of which is kept darkened with soothing music. They also provide tea and water for hydration. So the idea is, during your 1.5 hours, you do whatever progression of these treatments you like. I enjoyed the following: sauna, glacial shower, steam room, massage whirlpool, hydrate, wading pool, sauna, ice bucket shower. And so forth :)

The lack of AC, which is typical for Italy in May. If you are like me, and feel overheated pretty easily, you will want to be prepared for rooms to be on the warm side. The Italians think we're crazy for this, btw. I was in short sleeves and sandals in the 60 degree weather, and they were still in down jackets and scarves, lol.

The 90 minutes in this fantastic spa was almost worth more than the room itself! Includes saltwater swimming pool, mineral hot tub, freshwater whirlpool, wet and dry saunas, ice tray, scented showers, a weird room where you can lie on salt crystals, and more. The room was also wonderful with a beautiful big shower and balcony, plus the free breakfast buffet was very good. The town is cute too, accessible by train, not much to do but we took a pleasant 4 hour hike around local ruins (very sunny!). It was so relaxing after weeks of hectic travel that we stayed an extra day.

the Spa could be better, the pools were not so warm, as it was written they should be. I was freezing a bit and didn’t enjoy it so much. the saunas were nice though and the different steam showers

This is a truly luxurious hotel in a very pretty spa town. A perfect place to rest and recuperate - comfortable, glamorous building and the staff were all very welcoming, charming and helpful. The location in the centre means you can just stroll out into the pretty streets nearby. They arranged airport transfer taxi for several of us back to Milan.

Spa was fantastic - but would have liked if it opened before 09:30am, lovely large room with balcony, Helpful staff particularly in the spa

Would have liked a shower cubicle/wet room rather than a shower over the bath for a superior room, shame the outside pool was only open on the day we were leaving

Easy check in.Room was ready early.Breakfast room was lovely and spacious.Decor very easy on the eye.The best hotel in Salso by far.Great value for money!

Like a rabbit warren…I kept losing my way to my room.Roof top pool area closed even though the weather was hot.

the spa is amazing and the staff were great and very helpful. particularly the pool/bar staff.

The only downside of this property for me is the cheap tacky decor. it lacks warmth and character.. however once is used the spa this didn’t matter atall.

Beautiful old hotel that has been fully refurbished but retained the character of the original hotel Spa was really nice

The was very little storage space in our room. No drawers and only 8 hangers

The room had a leaky shower and for a “5 star” hotel there wasn’t even a coffee machine in the room, just a cattle with some instant coffee and no cream.

Excellent staff who were very informative and helpful .Facilities were all accessible despite there being a large wedding party
