I almost stayed at another hotel, but so glad i booked Alcontraluz. I believe the space is two houses combined, and is a lovely refuge with lots of welcoming and tastefully decorated spaces to sit and enjoy a bit of peace. I had a room with a great view of the street and mountains, then across the hall was a terrace with beautiful view of the ocean and city. Win-win! Great location with restaurants, shops, cafés all close by, and of course, all the street art the city is famous for. *Very*comfortable bed and pillows to sink into. Best i experienced during my whole time in Chile. Water/tea/coffee available all day, breakfast served until noon! Karin was very friendly, with great recommendations for restaurants in the area. Pablo treated us to a moment of generosity and conversation that was really special. There was another woman in the evenings who was nice too. Thank you all for your professionalism and understanding of hospitality!

I wish there had been a TV in the bedroom, but there is a sitting room on the main floor that has one. Everything was mostly clean, but found a couple of neglected areas.

We spent 5 days at the Acontraluz. The hotel exuded good vibes, due to the 5 or 6 members of staff who were all efficient, yet always polite and very helpful. The layout of the house is deliciously eccentric, the level of renovation of this bourgeoise villa at a perfect level of comfort and beauty. Unfortunately no guests played the grand piano in one of the salons. Coffee, tea and water was always available, as well as 24/7 reception. Best, though, is the location in the hills with wonderful vistas from the various balconies and terrace of harbour and sea from bed and balcony, with cries of seagulls in the distance.

The neighbours’ dog occasionally was very vocal and had lots to announce to other dogs. It did not bother us. We will definitely be back at our next visit to Valparaiso.

Such a fabulous place to stay!! The staff were extraordinarily friendly and helpful and the location is perfect. It’s really near loads of great streets to see street art and pop up galleries and brill places to eat. The room was really big and had a sunny terrace (morning sun) overlooking the water. It was also great at night seeing all the twinkly lights. Despite its great location, it was super quiet and if we didn’t set our alarms we would have slept in. The breakfast is excellent and healthy. Eggs, fruits, yoghurts, breads, cereals - sounds very standard but it was much better than that! And you can either eat inside or on the terrace overlooking the water, under a parasol. Loved it. Also, the staff are so lovely- we arrived early and we could store our bags in a secure room to wander about before checking into our room which was great. Rooms have a safe too. Highly recommend

It was a lovely boutique hotel (a converted old three-story home), with wonderful staff, and a tremendous view of the sea from the third floor terrace. The breakfast was varied, delicious and well presented. The location was in an interesting area of Valparaiso. I would definitely stay here again.

I parked on the street in front of the hotel and was provided with information of a parking lot two blocks away. I took my chance and it worked well for me to park on the street. While having a designated parking spot next to the hotel would be great, I don't see any other alternative except parking on the street as I did or the parking lot a little distance from the hotel.

This hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff made our stay wonderful and, if I could rate them higher than exceptional, I would. Every single member of staff went out of their way to be welcoming, friendly and helpful. The manager booked tickets for us when we couldn’t get a booking website to work, he lent us his train ticket and booked taxis for us; we couldn’t ask for better service. The location is perfect, close to the best restaurant area and in the best part of town. The hotel itself is a historic building and has lovely terraces with views of the harbour. Breakfast was excellent and served on one of the terraces so we could look out over the harbour to the hills in the distance. We were very sad to leave as we had been made to feel at home.

Almost everything - the view is stupendous from the balconies; the breakfast is huge; staff is superb (special shout out to Karin, Katarina and Pablo) and the location allows you to get lost in the maze of cobbled streets gazing at the myriad murals everywhere. And that’s before you’ve Ben started on all the restaurants and bars in close proximity.

We can only really nitpick about the water pressure in the shower which was a bit feeble.

Beautiful terrace on the top floor of the hotel, perfect for a drink at the end of a long day’s walk to watch the sun set. The history of the hotel was evident in every detail and made our stay all the more interesting. The guide books say one day/night is all you need in Valparaiso, but with accommodation like this, it’s definitely worth staying two nights. So many beautiful cafes nearby, so little time. Highly recommend this hotel. Breakfast on the terrace was a highlight.

Views of the city were outstanding from two balconies just a step outside the dining area. Most guests were friendly and world travelers from all over the world. The Staff was outstandingly helpful, Karin, Catalina and Pablo. The building is ~100 years old (2 combined houses), but very nicely modernized. Great bathroom and hot water. Location is very convenient to great seafood restaurants, and funiculars. Breakfast was not opulent, but just right for a savvy traveler. There is a piano and a classical guitar in the living room for those with a musical inkling...

Brilliant hotel. Lots of quirky features. Old building with period furniture creating lots of character. Large room with balcony with an amazing view. Large comfortable bed and pillows. Excellent breakfast served 9 to 12 so very leisurely. Staff were so helpful and obliging. Free water - cold and hot - available for drinks 24/7.

Nothing to do with hotel but lots of dog barking. Lots of uphill walking to the hotel but made views excellent

Karin and the hotel manager were extraordinary people, very caring and attentive.. the location was lovely and well situated in the town. Great ambience and history atmosphere.. really enjoyed my stay here in Valparaiso

Nothing, only a little chilly at night could use some extra heating in the room that's all. Perhaps a carpet beside the bed for cold floors. Everything else lovely and fine.
