We loved that the room had two large windows facing the River Main. We could see the Festung (fortress) and Alte Mainbrücke (Old Main Bridge). The hotel is in a great location with an easy walk to the train station, the sights, eating, drinking and shopping. One of the highlights was having a glass of Franconian wine on the Old Bridge from "Brückenschoppen". Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The bed was large and comfortable and we slept well. We appreciated the coffee machine in our room and the complimentary bottle of champagne as it was New Year's Eve when we arrived. The fireworks display all along the river was fantastic!

Bathroom was small and difficult to manoeuvre with the large bathroom door always in the way! Although the shower cubicle was also small, it was actually a great shower! We were really disappointed with the breakfast rolls as each morning, they were not fresh. It's a tradition in Germany to fetch the breakfast rolls from a nearby bakery (there was one about 200 metres from the hotel so we would've fetched them ourselves!) for that morning's breakfast. It's one of the things we really enjoy in Germany so to not have this for 3 mornings at a hotel that is abit expensive because of it's great location, was puzzling and frustrating.

Location.....location....location.....right on the water, big windows for amazing view of the fortress on the hill...super easy walk to the historic bridge and the old town center...winefest on the bridge....room decor with the light wood was very welcoming....comfortable bed....highly recommend walking across the bridge and up to the fortress to look down over the town...breakfast room nicely decorated and excellent views across the river....very good selection of fresh and artfully presented breakfast

Check in with the outside box system was very efficient and easy but missed the human interaction...we did not see anyone working at the property until the next morning for breakfast.

Very nice little hotel close to the river, Markt Platz/Old Maine bridge, 10 min walk to Residenz and within 10+ min walk to the train station. We picked it from Rick Steves’ list of central Wurzburg hotels because of air con, an absolute must during recent heat wave. Our room was sparkling clean and very comfortable. We were lucky to secure a room with a view on Marienberg fortress and the river (request during booking). While the area is lively and full of locals and tourists, the double-paned windows kept things quiet at night. Breakfast was delicious; staff friendly and helpful. Courtesy water bottles in the room were highly appreciated.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Alter Kranen. Location - just a few steps from the marketplace - was very central, with easy access to shops, restaurants and bars. Hotel was very clean, all facilities worked, view of the river and Fortress was lovely, and the staff were helpful and friendly. This is my second time to stay here and I would definitely do so again.

Only inconvenience I could pinpoint is lack of a bar or restaurant - as a solo traveller it's always useful to have one on site. (But see below.) Reception is unmanned from about 8pm but there are signs showing who to ring in the event of an emergency.

Receptionist was very pleasant and welcoming; breakfast was good and the breakfast room has a wonderful view on the river. Nespresso machine in the room is a nice touch, even though I didn't use it! As is the sparkling water

The bathroom was really cramped, I'd expect bigger and better for the price. I expected a river view too, but maybe that's my mistake. Actually the building itself doesn't open on to the river road at all, but there's nothing they can do about that, I guess.

The localization is perfect, right beside the river where everybody goes at sunset hour. The room was confortable, it even had kettle for coffee (which we didn't see much in Germany hotels). The bathroom was a bit small, but very modern and new. Breakfast was very good and the lady in the breakfast room was very nice. Although it is not close to the train station, it is perfectly walkable from there.

We arrived 7:30 pm, since it was stated in booking that check-in time was until 8 PM. But there was no one in the reception. It is possible to do the check-in in a system by the door, everything automatic, even payment. We left our luggage in the room and went out. When we got back, we had a little trouble opening the door. Finally, we discovered we had to look at the camera, for facial recognition. But it was not very straightforward. Nothing was written about it. I don’t know what happens if you have trouble opening the door. Maybe you have to call them. But what if you don’t have a phone? Anyway, if your staying here, try to get earlier so staff can explain you better how to proceed for entering the hotel in later ours of the night. It is a nice place after all.

Excellent location! The staff was professional and very polite. I had an exceptional view of the river and castle from my room. My room and the hotel were clean and well kept. Great breakfasts to get each of my 6 days there off to a great start. The value was very good.

1 super tiny issue. I found the electronic entry machine a little confusing when I returned late one night. But, I was able to figure it out.

The location was great and they had an awesome self check-in machine. The gentleman at the front desk when we checked out was very nice.

The room was quite small and there was a strong sewage odor. Also, the shower was very small. From an American perspective, the breakfast was not great. I suspect it is a decent European breakfast—lots of lunch meat and sliced cheese, vegetables, bread, jam. They had some scrambled eggs but they were very wet.

The best thing for this hotel is that it is facing the river and has excellent views if your room is on the side facing the river. It is really wonderful experience. The location of this hotel really exceed my expectations. Excellent!!!

Parking in the whole area is not easy at all. But we finally able to find a spot that does not need to walk too long. I wish hotel can provide better direction for how to loading for check in and how to park.

Hotel was located right next to the river. Our room had a fantastic view of the Marienberg Fortress. Room was large, clean and comfortable. Although there was no kettle in the room, staff were happy to bring us some hot water when we asked. We had a rental car and were able to park it at a public garage couple of minutes away on foot, so it was very convenient. Hotel provides a discount on the parking rate. Overall, hotel felt very cosy and comfortable.

This is not so much of a problem but something to take note - the hotel reception is manned until about 2.30pm only, so if you need to leave your luggage you may need to pick it up before the reception closes.
