We came to Takachiho to visit the famous gorge and when looking at accommodation, there were little around. Ryokan Shinsen was definitely more on the pricer side, however having stayed the 2 nights, I would be more than keen to stay here again. The facilities and rooms were immaculate. The service was excellent, very attentive. Breakfast and dinner were included in the stay and it's definitely an experience. There is plenty of parking if you're planning on driving and close to tourist attractions.

Loved every aspect of the stay

Wow did Ryokan Shinsen ever meet and exceed our expectations! Our room was incredible. The cleanliness and attention to detail in the design of the property and gardens are wonderful. The staff treated us like gold. They were especially considerate towards my girlfriends serious gluten allergy at dinner, and also my desire to not eat seafood.

Nothing, really. I missed out on not booking to stay another full day. It would have been nice to simply rest all day, play board games and relax in our private onsen after a hectic travel schedule.

Absolutely lovely. Your room is a small house with a patio and garden. There’s a hot tub on the patio and everything is configured for maximum privacy. On arrival you’re led directly to your room, check in and out are happening there. You never see the front desk. All meals are served in private dining rooms. Only downside you pay dearly for it but I really considered it worthwhile

Not the fault of the Ryokan but the Japanese navigation system in my rental led me to the back entrance which is narrow to navigate.

Everything was lovely. The location/setting, the staff/service, the rooms with private onsen and the food. First of all Takachiho gorge is beautiful but this takes the experience to another level with the level of service and F&B provided. Its a pity we only stayed 1 day.

Everything was really top notch. If I had to make a small critique/suggestion then I would recommend representing more of the local teas and sakes.

Peak of customer service, there was a staff member who spoke excellent English and explained everything very concisely. The aesthetic of my room and bespoke dining room was well considered and the overall design of the ryokan fit together very well. Both dinner and breakfast were elaborate and delicious. I particularly appreciated the ryokan's generosity with allowing me to have my breakfast half an hour earlier than the normal start time, and well as how considerate they were in helping me access the local kagura performance.

Five star traditional Japanese breakfast, which was amazing! This was followed by a five star traditional Japanese dinner, which was even more amazing! The staff was exceptional, always attentive to the needs of my 90 y/o mother. The facility was beautiful and peaceful, with very tasteful art and gardens.

There was nothing that we did not like.

The Kumano and Hourai rooms were perfect for our family of 4 people. we stayed 2 nights. The dinners and breakfasts were fantastic. The Takachiho beef was very special. The ryokan staff were very friendly and helpful

The website can have better description of the rooms to make choosing rooms a better experience. The Hourai room ended up much better than the Waraku room

Property is clean and room is spacious. The host is extremely polite and helpful. Food is excellent, one of the best ryokan breakfast and dinner experience.

beautifully presented. large rooms with the open air bath. it felt very private even though you are in a hotel. the staff and service were outstanding as was the dinner and breakfast. lovely Japanese garden and they provided a kimono experience.

This is an EXCEPTIONALLY GREAT ryokan. We stayed in a villa that had a private onsen bath, heated floors, manicured Japanese garden and all amenities. The meals were excellent. The staff was great. This is truly a first class ryokan that I would highly recommend to everyone.
