Gifu Miyako Hotel

I had a wonderful spacious room with breathtaking view over the river and mountains. Staff were very professional, the bed was very comfortable, the provided coffee in the room was great and I loved using the gym, pool and public bath.

Absolutely extortionate prices for the continental dinner buffet - 120,000 yen for cold food that was intended to be warm, and that you could make yourself in a microwave or oven. Do NOT eat in the hotel, go somewhere much cheaper with better food in town.

Clean room, perfect view. Got a complementary wine for Father's Day. The staff are friendly. Overall we had a comfortable stay.

We stayed in a suite room, 607, which had a separate sitting area and 2 toilets. This is a large, high-end hotel with quality facilities. We chose this hotel because it is only about a 20 minute walk to the dock where the boats to view ukai (cormorant fishing).

This is an older hotel that's starting to show its age. Our room, 607, had an expansive view of an empty parking lot and the exteriors of 2 sports stadiums. If you craned your neck, you could also see a little bit of the river, though not the part where the cormorant fishing (ukai) takes place. The hotel is not in a convenient location for walking. You will need to take a taxi or drive yourself to/from train stations. The breakfast buffet was substantial, with a good selection, but preparation particularly of western breakfast items was not up to par (steamed bacon, anyone?). This was the most expensive room that we booked in 3+ weeks in Japan. It was not in any way the best equipped or the most pleasant. Given the price, I would not stay here again.

Nothing worthy of praise.

One of the main reasons we went to Gifu was to see Ukai. A young female staff member at the reception desk had obvious difficulty in dealing with my enquires about what Ukai packages are available for us to join that evening, and in providing the details of those packages. Apart from the language problem (which was largely solved by using Goggle translate), she seemed to have little idea of what options/Ukai packages (whether those including dinner or not) are available. A male staff member (who was nearby and who seemed to be someone senior in rank - judging by his attire) was obviously aware of her difficulty by his occasional mutters to her in Japanese which seemed to have helped her a bit. However, he refrained from taking over from her and help with my enquiries which would have made things easier - perhaps that was a Japanese cultural thing. At the end of the day, we did not get to see Ukai. What really surpised me was how this 4-star hotel can be so unprepared when Ukai is one of the main attractions of Gifu.
