The staff were so wonderful and friendly. The hotel was also kept warm, cozy and quiet. Perfect getaway location. It has a rustic feel which we liked. The food was delicious, and we can’t recommend the hida beef option enough.

They DO warn you that there’s no food and to bring your own. There is nothing for miles. BRING FOOD. They provide breakfast and dinner… with TEN HOURS in between without lunch. Either adding a lunch option or even a snack vending machine would have made this perfect. But we had to ration what we did bring which was a bit stressful.

The room was exceptionally quiet and comfortable, with it's own onsen and a view of the woods. It felt very private. Breakfast and dinner were both good. Great location in the Japanese Alps, but it was definitely nice to have a car.

The private onsen was the best part of the trip. It is on the deck and you can literally spend hours soaking in the nature. In addition, the staff was beyond lovely and were extremely helpful. They even offered to draw me a map of the different walking routes. The food was also amazing at the restaurant. The chicken and pork were good as well as the hida beef. Room is very spacious. It is traditional Japanese so there is no standup shower but does how the stuff for a good onsen soak.

Some people mention how it's a bit run down in other reviews. It didn't bother me and it was rustic. I was a bit worried about packing in my own food for lunch due to the remote location, but just stopped at the convenience shop beforehand and they had a mini fridge. This is perfect for a retreat and I loved the solitude.

Excellent value for money at this hotel in the mountains. I had the place to myself as a solo traveller and felt I was getting a great deal for a huge room and private hot spring bath looking out over trees with real hot spring water from the area. Private balcony in the room and all! Authentic Japanese breakfast and dinner and the host made the effort to change my advance order from fish to beef after I'd learned beef is a speciality in the region, and my god was it good. The hotel is slightly old fashioned in some of its design but I didn't feel that was a problem, and you would do best to have a car if you want to explore the area, but the hotel itself is right on a bus stop to Takayama so you can easily travel there like I did as a solo traveller getting public transport. Staff spoke English and were super attentive.

Excellent hotel. Location in a very quiet area is great and very close to the rope away. The hotel is big and very spacious; the rooms are huge, very clean and modern, with plenty of room, very comfortable beds, with private hot springs in each room. The bath room is set at the back of the room, with external/internal showers and external hot springs - amazing. The common areas are huge, with an outside decking overlooking the river and the mountains. We had supper on the decking; my son had fun using the hotels telescope and binoculars looking at the stars. Customer service is excellent; all features of the hotel are explained in great detail, a coin laundry available with plenty of parking. I highly recommend this hotel.

I loved this hotel. Yes it is a bit dated and could do with a paint job etc, but the value for money is phenomenal. Staff were lovely, room was huge, and the onsen in the room was amazing. The onsen is fed straight from an underground spring but you are able to adjust the temperature by adding cold water and it looks straight out to the Alps. Bed was comfortable by Japan standards. The meals provided were also excellent value and thoughtfully prepared. I would love to stay here again.

My only complaint is that there is no proper shower, only the onsen shower which is very low to the ground. I got a connecting bus to the hotel which was 20 minutes late, but I'm glad I waited for it as it is a steep, winding road that you have to walk to get to the hotel if you miss the bus.

Room is huge and the private onsen is amazing! Breakfast and dinner was delicious and a little different each day. The staff was so pleasant and accommodating. Beds are big and comfortable enough, pillows are a tad on the hard side with the traditional beans in them but otherwise the room was very comfortable and clean. Also loved the free use of the traditional pyjamas. Everything needed was provided, could have tea/coffee in our room. The fridge and kettle worked well and they even gave us bowls to use for stay in lunch when we had bad weather. Just note that the closest convenient store is the town prior to the area the hotel is located in. However there is an amazing cafe (climbers cafe) just down the road that does fantastic lunch options.

It’s a little far away from most things (except the ropeway) give yourself plenty of time to get to Hirayu if you’re getting the bus to Kamikochi as it takes 40min drive by car. No one is on-site between 10am and 3pm so don’t bother trying to check in early or check out late. Just note that the shower/washing area is outside near the onsen, so you have to clean in the cold outside area not in the main bathroom area. The rooftop is a little dated and could do with an upgrade. Would have been nice to sit in the restaurant and drink tea/coffee with the view when the weather is bad. We had one day of snow and would have been nice to enjoy it from the restaurant with the big windows facing the mountains as the room views are blocked by trees.

We were looking for an isolated onsen in the middle of nature. This place fits the role. It has a sense of past grandeur and it might benefit from some renovation, but we had a very comfortable and large room with a private thermal bath (apparently every room has one) and amazing views on the surrounding forest. Together with another couple, we were the only guests in the hotel that evening, which made for a slightly eerie but romantic experience. We also ordered dinner, as we were warned by the manager, before arriving, that there are no restaurants in the vicinity. It was absolutely delicious!

As I said, the building is a bit run down and could do with some renovation, without spoiling the overall atmosphere though. We would have liked it if they had a public bath, besides the private ones in the room.

We had an amazing view from our private onsen and balcony. It was actually (unseasonably) warm enough during the day to sit at the table on the balcony to enjoy the view with drinks and snacks. The private onsen in the room was fantastic too. We used it a lot. The rooftop area is accessible for even better panoramic views too. The staff was kind and helpful too. I’m pretty sure they speak English but as soon as they heard my Japanese, they switched to all Japanese. Definitely get the dinner added to your reservation because it’s cheap for the amount of food you good and actually very delicious. I’m assuming tourists from abroad will thinks it’s the most amazing food of their trip compared to what they eat on their other days here when they praise that 7-11 food so much. I don’t usually eat much at these old hotels because they prepare the food hours before dinner and it’s rarely decent but this place had very good food. The Hida beef dinner was the best and the side dishes were all decent too. The breakfast was very typical old Japanese hotel (not historic charming old, 1980’s bubble economy old) and I didn’t eat much at all. I’m also not someone who can wake up and eat a giant meal 45 minutes later though. Overall very pleased with the food quality. The sofa area in the room was nice for hanging out in the evening.

The hotel is dated and other former guests suggesting it be updated are delusional. This entire area is clinging to their livelihood and guest numbers are down for these types of hotels so you should expect dated carpet and other things. Watch the closed down hotels, cafes, private tiny ski resorts the whole bus ride from Takayama to the hotel to get an idea of what’s going on in Gifu. The area is isolated and we expected that and prepared for it. We brought bottles of wine, cheese, snacks and other food (I expected to not like the dinner) so we survived for 2 days here without any withdrawals from modern conveniences.

The location was exactly what we wanted, away from the city and the crowds, a place to relax for a couple days during our summer vacation. The breakfast and dinner exceeded our expectations, the staff were also very friendly and accomodating. We also enjoyed the private hot spring bath in our room.

The facility is clean, but a little old. The observation deck has a wonderful view of the valley but is in need of some repair with warped boards across the deck floor. The internet signal was weak at times, especially in the evening times likely when other guests were also using more than during the afternoon.
