April 2024
It has always been a lifelong dream for me to come to Japan just because of rabbit island, and this onsen ryokan truly exceeded my expectations! I was SO excited to learn that there was a resort hotel on the island and we spent an amazing two nights here with the bunnies. I really can't say enough good things about it. The staff were extremely kind and helpful throughout the whole stay, some of them could speak very good English, the lobby had a really cute cafe and gift shop (which we spent a ton of money at). Free breakfast and dinner buffet were AMAZING - we truly felt like kings and queens and the selection was slightly different for each meal. Each item at the buffet table had allergy indicators and we really appreciated it because my mom is vegan so she couldn't have anything with milk, etc. The food was great. My brother had the curry for every meal because he loved it so much. We got to try so many different foods. And the 2 hot springs were incredible as well - we just picked a time when it wasn't too busy to go so we could fully relax without worrying about others seeing us - since we cannot go in with any clothes on, only the small towel provided at the hotel (we can take those home, according to the hotel staff - only the little colorful towels in plastic bags) The hotel also had activities like the morning walk (which we didn't participate in because we wanted to walk around freely, and it was in Japanese anyway so at the reception when we checked in, they handed us a translated page of the tour in case we wanted to participate) and the sea firefly demonstration (which we did go see; they showed some fireflies in a glass of water and they light up the ocean in the summer months and make the water glow blue). The best part was waking and seeing bunnies hop around the front of the hotel from outside our window...as someone obsessed with rabbits and the owner of 2, I truly wanted to live there.
The only thing that I distinctly remember not loving was how tight the toilet room was - my mom and brother said it reminded them of the toilets on the airplane and shinkansen that we took to arrive at rabbit island - very tight and small and not very spacious. I am short so it didn't bother me as much personally. Also the only bathing option available is the 2 onsen but those are 100% worth experiencing anyway. Outdoor pool was closed when we went late March since it was still cold and it hadn't been cleaned yet.

Staff: Professional and very helpful. We are very picky travelers, but they could professionally respond to all our requests and satisfy all our needs. Transportation: They provide extra ferries from/to Tadanoumi port in addition to the regular ferry, and shuttle bus to/from the port, very convenient. Meals: delicious, amazing quality and huge variety. It exceeded our expectations. They also had allergens lists near each dish, which is very thoughtful to the people with food restrictions. Rooms: Spacious and clean. Some parts need renovation, but considering the age of the hotel, we expected that. Facilities: you can rent a bicycle and a variety of things for outdoor activities. There is a pool and facilities at the beach that are open during the summer. It was closed when we visited, but we definitely will be back. You can enjoy cafe till 8 p.m. and souvenir shop till 9 p.m. Location: It's the only hotel on the rabbit island, you can enjoy the island without tourists and feed the rabbits during the evening and early morning and see sunrise/sunset.
Since many rooms do not have shower rooms or baths, shy people that have body defects cannot go to the public bath. It would be nice to offer a private bath (貸切風呂) for extra fee. They had an evening event showing how sea fireflies glow in the cup of water. Even though we were told they will be returned back to the sea, I had mixed and disturbing feelings for using live creatures like this for educational/ entertaining purposes.

Okunoshima is an intriguing world that juxtaposes the gothic ruins of wars past with the liveliness of free-roaming rabbits (from domestic roots). The rabbits, wild pigs, crows, insects, snakes, rats, plants, and all other nonhumans live in an entanglement of give and take. The rabbits are beautiful, and they communicate their needs for food and water to those who visit. Please fill their water bowls with clean water when you visit! The views from the observation deck are breathtaking. This island is my favourite place on the planet, and I feel blessed to visit as often as possible. I can't wait to return.

The rabbits were an adorable welcome as we exited the ferry! The staff was friendly and welcoming, the room was comfortable and clean. The view from our room was amazing! The next day we biked around the island and had adventures. The buffet was tasty! So many choices! The fish was fresh and the staff at the restaurant was so kind. I would recommend bringing pellets and hay with you before arriving at the island. There isn't any way to purchase food for the rabbits on the island. I would recommend staying two nights! Get a traditional room! You will not be disappointed! Thank you so much to everyone at this resort! Our stay was amazing!
Not having a shower in our room, but there is a public onsen.

You think an island full of rabbits can't get any better? Well the fact that this hotel is simply amazing makes a visit so much better. Don't make the mistake of booking only a couple of nights, you'll want to stay longer! The food is lovely, every single member of staff is fantastic, especially Aoyama who remembered our names at every interaction, helped us get the right bus and boat home and waved us goodbye as we left. She went out of her way to make our trip special. This really was a magical trip and we hope to return soon!
Being prudish brits the shared baths were a bit scary! But we were brave. Would have been nice to have shower cubicles but it's not a deal breaker.

December 2024
Staying at this hotel is the highlight of our honeymoon. We visited in early December- the weather was beautifully mild, and the island wasn't crowded (except for the rabbits!). I have food allergies, and the staff took the time to walk me through the restaurant and explain what is safe for me to eat, and what wasn't. There was a language barrier, but using a translation app made the exchange very easy. We took a lovely hike to the lookout point in the morning, and we're greeted by rabbits on the trail. It was fun to be surprised by them appearing! As Westeners, we booked a Japanese-style room for the experience and it was lovely. We opted to have the tatami mats laid for us, and they were ready by the time we got back from dinner. Seeing the rabbits frolic from our balcony was so enjoyable. I love that every room is ocean view. We cannot wait to return in a few years!
Only that we did not stay longer!! We arrived early in the afternoon and left late morning.

I loved all the rabbits on the island of course! I also really appreciated how friendly, professional and helpful all the staff were! It was a little difficult to get to the island, but once we were there, I didn't want to leave! I didnt need to leave! Everything was available at Kyukamura Ohkunoshima. The staff were easy to communicate with even with my limited Japanese language skills. I loved the onsen and the tatami mats with the futon. It was a great experience. I also liked that they had an event to learn about the Sea Fireflies (umi hotaru). I didn't even know it was an option, but the staff told me about all the things we could do on the island. What an amazing stay and an amazing experience. I LOVED it! Thank you so much! I will come back again!
I needed to do a little more research and study more Japanese. Because it is located on a small island with a ferry from a small town, it was challenging to get there with my very limited Japanese knowledge. On the island, there were any signs and staff who were very helpful!

At first, the hotel looks quite dated (e.g. old wallpapers in the room, old building) and there is no shower in the rooms (only a sink, and you can use the public bath). But we quickly discovered that it all adds to the unique atmosphere of the place. The room is quite big and has a separate seating area with the sea and beach view. Everything is clean. The staff is very attentive and speaks a bit of English. The staff makes your futon bed in the evening and removes the bed in the morning (so, during the day, you can use the whole room conveniently). The dinner and breakfast was enormously good - a lot of hot meals, sea food, beef, even a chocolate fountain! There is a cafe and souvenir shop in the hotel lobby. The hotel restaurant provides good lunch as well (not part of the booking price). The hotel also organizes morning walks and evening observation of miniature sea creatures. And the most important thing - you get out of the hotel and there are rabbits everywhere! I recommend booking 2 nights here to have enough time to enjoy the island and hotel. We stayed here during our longer trip to Japan and it felt like a "vacation during a vacation". The whole place has a slow, quiet, dream-like atmosphere. How to get there from Mihara station: take a train to Tadano-Umi, walk 3 minutes to the Ferry Terminal, take a ferry to the island (available periodically during the day), walk 10 minutes to the hotel (or take a bus which goes between the port on the island and the hotel).

I definitely recommend staying the night so you can really appreciate the island and all the bunnies! The staff was incredibly kind, and the dinner/breakfast buffets we got with our reservation were so good! Also there is no shower in the room, you use the shared showeroom/onsen. It was nice to soak after a day full of activities. We also rented bikes to ride around the island. They were kinda old, but they got the job done. If you want a more traditional Japanese experience, then I highly recommend it.
Everything is on the older side, and there's not much else on the island so be prepared to bring whatever you need for your stay.

Beautiful location, friendly welcoming staff, English speaking, delicious buffet dinner and breakfast included, we stayed in the Western style room which was quaintly decorated and had a wonderful view. They offered a guided morning walk and an evening demonstration about plankton crustaceans which although in Japanese was still fascinating to watch and unexpected. The location was fantastic, rabbits everywhere congregating in front of the hotel. We didn't use the hot baths but they seemed popular. Free courtesy shuttle bus from ferry terminal right to hotel door.
Checkout at 10 felt a little rushed , would have preferred a later check out, but even so they were happy to have our luggage so we could still explore the island.
