Casa do Ameal is an historical Portuguese quinta, quietly set now on a large estate, behind stone walls, and convenient to stores like Pingo Doce and Continente. Easily walkable to the historic center, but perfect if you have a car with easy parking on site. My spouse and I enjoyed breakfast there each of our 4 days. The breads and pastries were real deal, beautiful fruit, cheeses and I think some things can be special requested. João, the innkeeper, is so kind and helpful. A great way to start a day in historic and charming Viana do Castelo and the lush and green Alto Minho.

Casa do Ameal is absolutely gorgeous, the host was friendly and helpful with wonderful suggestions of local restaurants and made us feel at home. Some highlights were the swimming pool, the breakfast room, the variety of food on offer at breakfast, and the wonderful scenery. We loved the many places you can see in the sunshine while reading a book surrounded by beautiful nature. Having two supermarkets so close by was also handy.

The only thing that would improve our wonderful stay would be having a fan in the room as sleeping at night during the summer heat was pretty uncomfortable.

We had an excellent 2 weeks family stay at this property. We liked it a lot and everything was perfect. We enjoyed a lot the whole property with the big garden, swimming pool and our apartment was very nice. Joao was very helpful with all the information about Viana and around. And his team was always very kind and the appartement cleaned every day. The breakfast was excellent. The location was very good as well and the big plus is a supermarket just across the street.

Our recent stay was extraordinary! We were greeted with warmth and professionalism by the attentive owner of the estate, who went above and beyond to ensure our comfort. The staff was extremly friendly and helpful, the rooms were perfect, the pool beautiful situated in the park like environment with orange and citrus trees. Breakfast was delicious. Location-wise it is ideally suited, a quiet place conveniently close to the center of the town and the local beaches. A perfect combination of luxury, comfort and service.

The place is a hidden gem. We were greeted out front and shown into a room that housed the family history, including handmade costumes and clothing that was made by great aunt or grandmother, I apologize for not getting this right. We were then treated to a glass of Port. It was a farm at one time. The atmosphere is old world, and the grape arbors are a delight to sit and have some wine and cheese. There is a communal kitchen that supplies glasses, plates, etc. There is a grocery store directly across the street. We loved walking the grounds. It was so peaceful. We wanted to stay a day or 2 longer, but they were booked. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The complimentary breakfast was a beautiful spread with fresh bread, juice, meats, cheese, fruit, and yogurt.

A charming old family estate. Tho in middle of the busy town center, when you drive inside its walled perimeter, feels like a garden sanctuary. Loved the mix of original stone walls, beautiful old furniture in our room, yet with all the amenities. Breakfast was elegant and delicious in a lovely breakfast room. We also had access to a small kitchen equipped with many original historical artifacts. Equally memorable was our host, Joao, whom we had multiple delightful conversations with. Both he and his staff went out of their way to help us. One of our favorite stays in all of Portugal!

The breakfast, the friendly staff and the fact that it was an oasis of peace surrounded by the town.

There was no corkscrew and the fridge needed to be defrosted. Website poor on directions to the property for people without gps. Obvious physical land marks, such as Continente supermarket, could be used. Even locals didn’t know where the street was.

It is a beautiful and tranquil place, even though in the city. Our host João was very kind and hospitable. He gave us excellent advice on places to visit and which restaurants to eat. Breakfast was very good. All in all an excellent and enjoyable place to stay

Without detracting from our favourable recommendation it would have been nice to be able to make an early morning or late afternoon coffer or tea in the communal traditional kitchen.

Owner was fabulous and cared about the experience of each guest. He was incredibly responsive to requests — he gave us excellent dinner recommendations, where to go for water sports. He meticulously prepared each breakfast item, many items were delicately cut. The orange juice was from his trees.
