Location/parking in the middle of all the fun things to do in Nevada City. A beautiful renovation of an historic Gold Rush hotel. Super nice, large staff, surprising in a relatively rural place, but indicative of the draw of the area. The staff people we met could provide the type of sophisticated service one might find in a European grand hotel. Great food and drink at the bar. Extreme comfort and beauty of the rooms. Shoot I could go on and on.

Minor thing - we could not get the in room coffee pot to work and it should have been very simple to start. Called the front desk and confirmed how to make it work, but in the end went into the Grand Salon for the beautiful breakfast and got coffee.

The hotel is very cute. The room was comfortable once we were able to change out the feather pillows. The staff was polite & the morning coffee, tea & muffins in the Great Room was a nice surprise. The Christmas decorations throughout the hotel were pretty.

I would have loved to know that the restaurant only takes reservations when I booked the room. Since it was over Christmas all restaurants in town were closed, except the Chinese restaurant across the street (thank goodness it was good) because the hotel restaurant was booked full. I also would've liked to know that the room had a double bed & not a queen sized bed & no closet or armoire. I was glad that I had my computer since there are no TVs. We were sad that all of the Christmas activities in the city occurred a couple weeks earlier.

My wife and I loved the location, the service was great and the staff were helpful and understanding when strange situations arose like there was no parking in the lot and we alerted the desk clerk and she told us about a spot that was opening right at that moment. Plus, the retro Victorian decor was thrilling and we kept searching for ghosts.

The rooms were a little cramped for my taste, plus I like to watch the news, but with no televisions in any of the rooms, the provided retro Victrola radio helped me catch up on local news. It would have been appreciated if we were alerted about that fact beforehand.

Our two-night stay at the National Exchange was divine! It was like staying at a friend's house! The rooms were so beautifully decorated and comfortable. We had a room with a clawfoot tub, and it was so relaxing after a day of hiking and exploring the area! In the morning, they provided a fresh and light breakfast of yogurt and strawberries, hard-boiled eggs, and delicious coffee in their grand lounge on the second floor; so stunning! At night the hotel was quiet and relaxing. There is a great restaurant downstairs, but we ate out both nights; when we return, we will eat at the restaurant!

No T.V., but it did not ruin our stay one bit! It felt good to be unplugged :)

Pros: Perfect downtown location and such a vibe! Dog friendly, adorable lounge area with free coffee, tea and breakfast in the morning. Would absolutely stay again.

Cons: While it’s a beautiful historical building, the sink was kinda clogged (old pipes) and there was a lot of dust - I get the charm piece, but when there’s cob webs on the light fixtures, it’s really more of a lack of cleaning/maintaining. I was fine, but someone with allergies might want to stay elsewhere.

This is a classic gold rush-era hotel that is restored to a nice standard. It is located in the heart of everything in Nevada City. Staff was friendly and the large balcony overlooking the main street of town was a great place to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or evening. The room itself was a little small but well appointed with a comfortable bed and nice chair to sit in. The bathroom has a nice shower and was very clean. Breakfast was delicious and the breakfast area is nice. I really don't know why anyone would stay at a different hotel in Nevada City.

Not having an elevator might be a challenge if you stayed on the 3rd floor. Parking (which is free) can be a little tight if you use your car.

Room was large, beds comfortable. We asked to be moved to a room with a bathtub and we were moved. The tub was huge!

Would have liked coffee and tea making equipment in room. We had to get dressed and go downstairs to get coffee in morning. Also, no TV, but that was not a problem for us. No lift to upper floors, which might be a problem for the less fit as the stairs are formidable.

We loved that the gold rush era hotel has been beautifully restored to its original glory, but with modern updates. Our room was very clean and comfortable and there was a nice continental breakfast included with some of the best granola I have ever tasted. It is right on the main street, so the whole downtown shopping district is right outside your door.

Everything was fine.

cleanliness, well lit (natural and artificial) and modern bathroom , old world charm in decor in sleeping area, continental breakfast, veranda, helpful staff

no closet/ closet space!!! have never seen a closet where the closet door is basically covering a wall and on the wall are 2 hangers hanging facing you! lack of easily accessible electrical outlets for electronic devices, and no writing desk, expected more basic amenities for $412 a night.

We'd seen this hotel before on a trip to Nevada City so we were excited to stay there on an overnight. The hotel decoration is really beautiful and interesting. The room was very spacious and comfortable. The hotel restaurant serves delicious food in a place that feels historical but also upscale. Loved staying here.

Parking is limited and can be a little tricky.
