Hotel Sonnenberg

That was the place I was looking for. Recommend. Switzerland is quite an expensive country. For a room in a 4* hotel, you will pay 500 - 1000$ (the same quality in other countries are 100 - 200$). But you can find a hotel like where I have been: small, with a touch of local taste. Close to the rail station, shops, and restaurants with astonishing views of beautiful mountains. The hotel will be renovated in the next few months. I hope the local style will remain. The young people working there are great: with a warm smile, they will help you with everything.

There is some space to improve the breakfast. Maybe some pancakes? More fruits?

Firstly, don't be discouraged with reviews about steep path to the hotel - it's kinda steep paved walk but from the parking lot it's about 100 meters, maybe less, and it's not THAT steep - it's a regular Swiss mountain village walk. Just don't take all the luggage in one go, if there's a lot. The hotel itself is great - it's very pretty inside and outside, well maintained, comfortable and with great views. Receptionist that met us was very helpful and welcoming, and generally everything was great - it's in quiet part outside of the main street, yet it's just few minutes walk from the central area. Good breakfast, too.

One annoying thing was to chase service personnel in the morning to get some coffee - they're nice but they were showing up only every 15 minutes or so to check for new guests at breakfast, so we had to go look for them. I'm not sure why the coffee machine is not part of the buffet, they clearly use one to make coffee when asked.

Everything was perfect from start to finish. 1. Location - As soon as you get off the train you see a sign for the hotel, all you have to do is follow those signs. The hotel is just a few minutes walk to the very centre of the village which makes is handy for everything. 2. The hotel itself - this is a beautiful, quaint and beautifully Swiss Hotel. There is no mistaking that you are in Switzerland, one thing I noticed from the other hotels I saw was that they could be anywhere in the world. It is everything you would imagine it to be. There is even a beautiful reading and relaxation room. 3. Staff - the staff were so helpful from start to finish with planning my trip ip Jungfraujoch to picking where to go for dinner. 4. THE VIEW - this is breathtaking like something from a fairytale. I had a beautiful balcony looking out at the mountains. The breakfast room also has such fantastic views as does the reading and relaxation room. I will definitely be back 😊

The experience at Sonnenberg was excellent. The managers and staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The location was convenient to trains and busses. The breakfasts were very good and they used as much local food as possible. We highly recommend this hotel. The attached picture is the view from our room.

Direct hit! I have been in hundreds of accommodation establishments and Hotel Sonnenberg is one of the best. It is located in the center of Grindelwald, yet in a quiet and beautiful location higher up on the slope. The hotel consists of two buildings. My room had everything I could wish for: bathroom, terrace, cooking facilities, fridge and excellent wifi. Breakfast is good. The owner is nice and helpful. Actually, the only weakness of the place is that you can't get there by car, but you have to leave the car in the hotel parking lot on Kreuzweg (5 parking spaces) about 200 meters away. The walking part is quite steep uphill, which may cause problems for the elderly or people with reduced mobility. I truly can recommend Hotel Sonnenberg: it exceeded my expectations.

Our room on the second floor was pretty large, cozy and had an amazing view on the village from the balcony and a mountain view from the window above the bed. Some reviewers were complaining that it was difficult to reach the hotel because of its location on the hill, however, it's definitely worth it because you will get an incredible view better than in other hotels located underneath. The staff was really friendly, responsive and always ready to help. We also did enjoy tasty breakfasts with a good choice of Swiss cheeses and cold cuts. Even if you are not skying or snowboarding, you will definitely find many other alternatives to do in Grindelwand as hiking (all routes of different difficulty levels are properly marked), sledding etc. A cable car to the top of the First mountain is located just in 7-10 minutes by foot from the hotel. We were travelling by car and were lucky to find free parking spots at the hotel's parking. Since there are only a few parking slots, you can always park nearby at Eiger center (5 minutes by foot from the hotel). It is better to always check the weather if you are travelling by car since you may need snow chains in case of massive snowfalls in the recent days. Thus, we could highly recommend this hotel for a perfect stay at the Grindelwand and would choose it for our next stay as well!!!

We loved everything about this hotel. Friendly staff, great views, delicious breakfast, great location, clean and spacious room/bathroom. Would def stay here again in the future.

The path up to the hotel is very steep, it was really hard to get there with luggages. But all the hotels in Grindelwald were on mountains so it’s very understandable.

Super traditional Swiss Hotel elevated above the village with awe inspiring rooms views of the Eiger Northface and other peaks. Very comfortable room - I appreciated the in-room coffee making facility. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Great breakfast!

The location above the village makes access a little difficult particularly when snow has fallen. However, the walk is only 10 mins up and 5 down and you do get used to it!

Hotel Sonnenberg is a wonderful family run hotel in quiet but still central part of Grindelwald with a fantastic view on the mountains. Rooms are being cleaned every day. Breakfast in the cosy breakfastroom is simply fantastic. The personel will make your stay a great one!

The walk uphill from the station is a bit of a steep climb but totally worth it, it's a walk to a paradise view of the mountains! If you like silence it is totally worth the effort.

Very cozy rooms with a wonderful view of the picturesque Grindelwald Valley, very nice hosts who gave us valuable advice on the attractions in the village and the proper equipment for day trips in the valley and around it, excellent location close to all kinds of transport and restaurants, delicious rich breakfast, very clean. We would be happy to visit them again.
