Il Belvedere

The staff were amazing. They were friendly and helpful. For example, they gave us directions on the best place to park. Parking is avaiable for a fee in a small lot that is just few blocks up the street. The staff were also happy to share their knowledge about the town, including the best cave churches to explore. The view from the patio is one of the best views in town. The location is perfect for exploring Matera in the day or night. Make sure to walk into town at night as the town becomes alive. It was great to sit at a cafe and watch the people walk on by. The cave rooms are comfortable and had the best shower that we had on the trip. Breafast had great local foods such as foccacia, hard boiled eggs, pastries and the excellent local bread. The cappuccinos were delicious. Matera was the most fascinating and cleanest city we visited on our trip to Southern Italy.

This hotel is among one of the most memorable and impressive ones I've ever stayed in,bearing in mind I have travelled all over the world.First of all it is built right into the rock face.You have the chance to stay inside a cave with real fosdils in the walls and ceiling ! Rooms are incredibly comfortable with all mod cons and the air con works very well.The view from the terrace where you can eat a sumptious breakfast,is absolutely breath taking ! And finally the staff are just amazing and can't do enough for you.So helpful and passionate about the place they live.Don't miss this wonderful opportunity !

I love this place! Matera is magical and Il Belvedere was just the icing on the cake for me. From the warm and informative reception from Simone and the kindness from Davide, to the location and the aesthetic and the ample breakfast…I really could not have asked for a more delightful stay. The small single room fit perfectly with the Matera vibe, and the location was perfetto! I will absolutely be back, and I have already recommended the hotel to friends and family. Wonderful!

On our arrival, Karim showed us around the hotel, explained the facilities in our room, and brought us a cup of hot tea in the lounge. He made our dinner reservations that night. We found all of the staff to be exceptional. Our room was beautiful and comfortable and the bathroom was great with good water pressure. The location is great, just a short walk into the heart of the Sassi. The view from the terrace is spectacular looking over the Sassi and the Gravina. Eating breakfast in the sunshine on the terrace enjoying that view has been one of the highlights of our trip. The breakfast is fantastic. I’ve stayed in many hotels, and this one is one of the best. Book it.

We had a fantastic stay at the Belvedere! Our room was comfortable and carved into the rock which made it very characteristic. There is a terrace with an absolutely stunning view over the old part of Sassi di Matera and where we had our breakfasts and early evening aperitif. The city itself is a wonder and a very rare sight as it is all carved out in stone with houses in caves overlooking a beautiful ravine and that all makes out an amazing scenery. There are many sites to visit, primarily museums showing the ancient way of living in the caves and ancient churches with mural paintings. Davide and his colleagues were very pleasant and accomodating and made our stay a memorable one. We meant to stay one night but ended up staying two nights to enjoy the city even more.

We had nothing to complain about. The hotel waszreally good value for money.

Lovely hotel set within cave. Room was good size with everything you require. The balcony had an amazing view. Nice lounge area. We departed at 6 am and we were allowed to help ourself to juice, yoghurt, cereal, biscuits before leaving and we were all made a cappuccino when the first staff arrived. Very helpful staff and we were allowed early access to rooms once cleaned. There is a lift that luggage can be sent to the first floor.

Unfortunately my room was on a top floor and had no view or cave walls. However the room was lovely.

The view from the terrace is incredible. The staff are so welcoming and generous with their time, offering advice on the best restaurants to eat in and attractions to visit. We loved being able to come back for a drink on the terrace after exploring Matera. Rooms are clean, and beds are comfortable. Bathroom facilities are great, air-conditioning worked a charm, especially after the extreme heat Matera is experiencing in July 2023. Breakfast was plentiful.

A lovely warm welcome upon our arrival, followed by a brief tour of the hotel and then up to our room. David on reception was very helpful, suggesting the best walk to see the city, and good restaurants. The terrace was wonderful, great at any time of the day. Our room was quiet, comfortable and spacious.

We didn't stay long enough. Next time we'd like one of the real cave rooms, we were up on the first floor and the room overlooked an alleyway.

Il Belvedere is in an excellent position to enjoy your stay in Matera and, oh my goodness, those views from the terrace! Parking was easy and the room was lovely but the real winner for us were the fantastic staff. We were warmly greeted, taken to the terrace for a walk-through of a map of the sea, given recommendations for dinner and then given cappuccinos and an array of delicious cakes! I’ve never experienced a check in quite like that before! The terrace is the perfect place for aperitivo and enjoying the very good breakfast.

Small hotel, practically situated on the fringe of Sassi Caveoso and therefore easy to park the car. Our room was quite spacious. Breakfast is served on a nicely situated terrace with stunning view of the town. Great for aperitif in the evening. For dinner, I heartily recommend Soul Kitchen, exceptional Ribeye (Podolica) and Pannacotta with orange infused olive oil. Make sure you take a guided walking tour to really get to know Matera.
