Hotel La Cisterna

Typical Tuscan hotel in the main square of town. Restaurant upstairs with fabulous views over the town/countryside. Open for breakfast & lunch. (not dinner) Restaurant also on the ground floor. Good breakfast selection. Staff very helpful

Not that easy to arrive without a car. We took a train to Poggibonsi, but no taxi's available. So took a bus to the city walls of San Gen. (no 130/133) then walked to the hotel up a steep cobbled hill. Hotel does not a have courtesy bus. There are also buses to Siena. However, on a Sunday morning, travel by bus/train is very difficult, so plan your stay to avoid using public transport on a Sunday morning.

The central location is brilliant. The view of the square from the balcony was amazing. The room was lovely and likewise the bathroom. We had breakfast on one morning in the restaurant, which was fantastic. Such a wonderful choice. I would stay in Hotel La Cisterna again in a heartbeat! Thank you! We also had a fantastic wine-tasting experience with Giorgia in the Fontanaleone shop to the left of the hotel on the square. A highlight of our stay in San Gimignano!

Location was ideal. They also have a lift which is really rear here and with this old buildings to carry luggage in second floor up the steep and narrow stairs the lift is very welcome. The personal were very friendly and supportive. They put quite an effort to book as a dinner at desired restaurant.

We have booked a room with a balcony but which has a little table with two chairs but everything was dirty from pigeons. This was really the only bad thing. If we would’ve stayed longer we would’ve ask to clean it.

For our group we had 2 different rooms and outlooks, one piazza view and one valley view which were both spectacular. Rooms were a great size and well equipped. The hotel itself is right in the middle of the old city and everything was on our doorstep, including the hotel restaurant that was excellent. Breakfast was also great from the dining room. Especially nice to stay overnight in San Gimignano and enjoy the city outside of peak tourist hours as you get a more authentic Tuscany experience.

It was in the center of the piazza in San Gimignano. I loved the location. The staff was very welcoming, friendly and offered suggestions to make our stay the best. The room was clean and warmly decorated. My favorite was the view of countryside vineyards from our open windows. This stay was a highlight of our Tuscany travels.

I loved this property but because it is a walled city, the parking is outside the wall. Really a minor inconvenience as we were able to unload at the entrance prior to parking.

The location is perfect! It is perfectly central, it is really fun to hang out on the steps of the cistern at night eating gelato and people watching,  the views from the breakfast room are glorious, and even though it’s on the central Square, the hotel rooms in the back are very quiet and peaceful. The hotel was super clean, the staff was friendly and helpful, the air conditioning worked well, and the location is ideal.

The hotel location and the view of the medieval town square from the room was spectacular. Modern facilities. As we arrived, classical violinists were playing outside the hotel. Superb, albeit a coincidence! Great air conditioning, which was necessary as we stayed during a heatwave.

The breakfast was average. Such a shame. Easy fix.

The view from the room was like something from a post card. Right below our balcony on the walking street you could hear (if you had the door open) endless gasps and sighs of admiration from tourist passers by who just came around the corner and seen the view that you have ALL THE TIME!! Sound isolation from outside to inside was amazing - there was a big music festival (the summer party they have once a month) and we couldn't hear anything when we were going to sleep relatively early (to Italian standards - 22:45).

How short the stay was. Minimal amounts of noise from neighbor rooms (to be expected from even modern ordinary rooms to be honest and wasn't bad at all). The wall of the bathroom has a very rough/grainy stone texture bit that stands a bit out from the wall which actually managed to destroy my favorite watch so watch out for that.

We arrived on the date booked after a fairly long drive for a four night stay only to find that the hotel did not have our booking. We had previously changed our dates and it became apparent that, although we had received confirmation of the change from booking.com, the hotel had not. We sensed a potential disaster for our holiday but need not have worried as, although the hotel was very busy, some re-arrangements were quickly made and we were given a lovely room with a great view as we had booked. If you are going to visit San Gimignano, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Super location at Cisterna Square. Very professional and nice reception service. All at best - the way it should be in such place. Very good stay when traveling in ITA this year.

A description of how to get to the hotel can be somehow a bit easier :) This superb location is in a closed area - so to travel following Google ( and instruction from the hotel same time) wasn't easiest. Still, I like hotel shared in advance all the route.
