Location is excellent for the purpose of visiting Hida no Sato (Folk Village) and other places in Takyama; private shuttle service makes it practical for visiting Shirakawa-go as well. The lodging itself is charming - the experience of staying at a proper traditional ryokan with tatami floor, paper doors and futon beds is well worth the (very reasonable) price. Finally, I must recommend that guests also attend the proposed in-house meals - breakfast and dining experiences - because the food is superb and the service is impeccable and friendly. Highlight of my trip.

Nothing negative worth mentioning.

The surroundings are so beautiful! I love that they have a free shuttle to take you from and to the station, but if you don’t make it on time for that, a taxi will cost around 10 usd. Also is less than 20 min walk. They include a Yukata, tea and delicious cookies in the bedroom, and let us use the private Onsen. The breakfast in the morning is huge and amazing and delicious, I highly recommend to get it. I love that have laundry and a nice map of the Ryokan so you don’t get lost. The host are so friendly and kind and fun. We had a great time and for sure would love to go back and stay there again. Highly recommended.

I’m not used to the traditional Japanese toilet in the bedroom, but luckily we have a western style to share.

The room was really spacious, with both bedroom and living room, and separate bath and toilet. The onsen was nice, really hot. The surroundings were nice, with a short distance to the hida village and the small outdoor museum with the seven gods(if you dont speak japanese, try tobuse google translate, because the woman that runs the place is really nice and tells a lot.). In addition there was a really nice shop/cafe nearby, and a cat cafe, all on the way to the Hida village. All four things are strongly recommended!! Takayama is a really nice town too.

The place is a bit outside of town. The buses from town stopped too early, taxi was around 1500 yen.

Very Japanese. Friendly staff, and the welcome option of a private onsen for couples. The onsen was the only bathing option but that suited us fine! No private toilets either but the shared facilities were very close to the room and I always had them to myself. A laundry room was provided with coin operated machines, and coin operated massage chairs for while you were waiting for the washing. Great for tired legs after the steep climb to the ryokan! The ryokan was a bit of a trek through 'no man's land' to the prettier parts of town, particularly the Edo period streets, however the neighbourhood surrounding the ryokan itself is really lovely, especially the walk up to Hida no Sato (the Folk Village). The Folk Village itself is utterly charming and well worth the hill climb. Shuttle service to the train station was very welcome with all our luggage. All in all, thoroughly enjoyed our time in Takayama.

Few evening dining options close to the ryokan, and the ryokan dinners were always booked out. (These did look delicious, and the dining rooms were beautiful so next time we'll book ahead). Room service options were also limited to rice balls (with bitter plum filling) when we were there, though we were grateful to at least have these.

I loved everything about this property! The building was well-maintained for a 125-year-old building. The private baths were ideal and had no problem utilizing the facility. Laundry was ideal as we were traveling light and needed to use it daily. Food, the food was the best. So many tastings from specialized dishes around the region. Additionally, I was able to rent a car for the day and since it was on the property it was extremely convenient for pick up and return.

None. We went to visit during the first two weeks of February. Hida Old Town had a limited amount of shops and stores open. Although Google/Maps indicated that they were open, they were all closed. Something to keep in mind if you decide to visit during the same time.

Amazing ryokan with very kind and helpful staff and owner who speaks good English and is readily available. Our room was clean and a great size and the futons were comfy but the staff will readily add extra padding if they are not as comfortable as you like, in the case of my boyfriend. Food is amazing too, especially the dinner so definitely give it a try! The onsens were also very lovely with options for public and private ones (you can only use them as a couple though). Right beside Hida Folk Village, the Teddy Bear Museum, a few local craft shops for shopping and an amazing cat cafe!

It wasn't a bother for us but it is a little far to the center of Takayama, about 20-25 minutes. Also on a hill so walking down is fine but going up is an issue. We mostly took a taxi back which is only 960 yen and also there is a shuttle provided by the ryokan.

Loved this ryokan - authentic stay in Japanese Inn with public and private onsens. I used both onsens and they were equipped with all of the facilities which you would want. In public onsen it actually felt very private due to screens in between the showers. We had the dinner one night and the breakfast for two nights (stay was for two nights) and all the meals were incredible, especially given we are both vegetarian. Free shuttle bus to the station as well!

The location is around 30 mins out of centre of town and no buses after 4.49pm so you have to walk or cab it then. The mattresses are very thin here, not as comfy as other places where we've slept on the floor.

We really liked this Ryokan, the stadd it's 10/10, they're super friendly. The room and all the Ryokan amenities were very comfortable, the room was quite big/ We love that they have public and private Onsen, and we also like that it's in a very quiet location. I can totally recommend and I would stay again here if I could. :)

I think they could improve communication about the shuttle bus, because I know they offer pick-up from the station to the Ryokan, but we couldn't "book" it and decided to walk. I think it would be better to receive instructions on how to use the shuttle bus, as we always have luggage and it ends up being tiring to carry luggage to the location.

Warm host, they give pickup service from station since ryokan is little away from main town. Great place with good facilities and a lovely hot spring bath Due to some cancellations we had the entire place to our selves Walls are adorned with praises from various past host. Loved that they have a map for past years depicting from which regions tourists have come. Owner was kind enough to drop us at the station in the morning even before their regular shuttle service

Located a little bit away from the main tourist attractions. Might be a hassle if you planing to walk back after dinner especially in the snow like we had to.

We liked our room at this ryokan and also its location. It was not a problem for us that it was not in the city center. It was an advantage as it was in quiet environment and close to Hida Folk Village that was so great and worth a visit. Breakfest and dinners that thy offer are amazing but rememer to book them in advance and then also remind them. They also offer a transportation to/from the city center.

On the 2nd day our order for breakfest was somehow forgotten and we were not served it.
