Location was great. Motel isoff the main road in to town, so minimal noise, very quiet. Also, it's two streets away from Bentinck Street which runs along the edge of the ridge on which the town is built. This ridge borders the ocean and the Portlanders have had the very good sense to preserve the ocean side of the street for the public. A couple of minutes walk from the motel brings you to some lovely, wide parkland, with stunning ocean views and old pines which cast beautiful shade. If you're a walker like me, it is one of the best ways to get into the town. I liked everything about Portland. The shopping centre is small so easily walkable and everything is handy: cafes, restaurants, pubs, bakeries, an IGA, Aldi and Woolworths, and lots of other specialty shops, including ones which cater to hikers/ campers/ fishers. I ate at The Royal Hotel and Clock By The Bay and both were very good. This place is very well located: there are walks everywhere and the Cape Bridgewater walk from Bridgewater Beach to the Blowholes is not to be missed: you walk round and up to the top of the headland, with rolling pastures/ sheep grazing on one side of the path and cliffs with the ocean crashing on to rocks on the other. It was so good, I did it twice during the week I was there( takes a good 3 + hours though!). A short drive to Nelson takes you to entry points along the Glenelg River and there's a lot to explore there. A further short drive across the border takes you to Port MacDonnell and then up to Mt Gambier and the Blue Lake (all doable within a day there and back). There are also The Grampians c. 2 1/2 hours drive one way. Didn't manage to get that done this trip but it's on my list. Eastwards, there are the lovely small estuary towns of Narrawong and Yambuck on the way to Port Fairy. All along the way, there are small roads/ tracks which take you out to the ocean for a stunning views.

There was nothing I didn't like!

Location was brilliant for fishing, also the A/C was awesome after a long day fishing in heat, to come back and crank that up was nice and cool in the room :) The cooking facilities (bbq area) was awesome as well, the brother in law and I went and cooked up a feed for tea, and then again for breakfast the next day! Awesome feature!! Comes with a weber & other big cooker, seats and a TV to put some tunes on.. do recommend for anyone staying!

Brother in law thought the beds were hard, but I like that in a bed so he can go get some concrete and harden up :) other than that nothing to complain about at all, and the lady who checked us in was super friendly and lovely.

The BBQ area was totally rain proof, & had walls, & it was also a fully equipped kitchen, with hot & cold water complete with sink, & with dining table, & lounge area, excellent & clean, eased the cost of our holiday substantially by being able to cook our own food, & eat it at the table. We highly recommend staying here! 👌 loved the nice quiet rooms, & the location.

The weather wasn't on our side, unfortunately, & the google GPS kept sending us the wrong way, or in circles. Ahhhh well, winter IS cold & wet, after all

Wasn't too far from town and was in a quiet street. Staff were very friendly. WIfi was good from memory.

Rooms a bit dated, but hey it's in the name so I expected that. Annoying green light outside shon through the window, although I believe this turned off around 10pm. I did like the light up shower head at first until I Realised that red meant it was judging me for being in the shower too long.

The location is perfect - close to town centre but still peaceful and quite. Staff were very accommodating, helpful and nice. Room was very clean, (more clean than expensive hotels in the city). Room was also roomy and complete with TV with free Netflix and cutlery, toaster, kettle, microwave and fridge. Bathroom was old style but very clean and complete with hairdryer and cool shower head with coloured lights. It was a delightful, comfortable short stay. Also heaps pf parking space and they have a free to use BBQ place.

Nothing.

Great old mid-century motel that has retained most of its original character. Loved all the original fittings and fixtures. Very well designed all those years ago with a long bench down one side of the room for easy sorting of travel gear. The unit was very clean and comfortable. Also the motel grounds are large and parking is very easy to manage.

Location is a bit of a distance from town centre and pubs, cafes etc, but is an easy drive along the esplanade road. Also the shower recess could do with re-grouting/ resealing.

I finished up the Great South West Walk a day earlier than planned and grabbed a room at the Retro. Perfect spot for a weary hiker; out of the main noisy center of town but close enough to walk to. Great sleep, didn't hear a peep out of other guests, no outside noise either. Love the retro styling, comfy bed and free Netflix. Super friendly receptionist at check in.

It really is a retro experience! It was so nostalgic. It reminded me of my childhood staying in motel's in the 70's and 80's, but in a great way. The room was clean and comfortable. The kitchenette had a toaster, microwave, kettle and a fridge. Large TV and electric blankets on all the beds.

Could use an extra power point in the kitchenette area.
