There was such a great sense of hospitality at Victoria House. We felt right at home and absolutely loved the sitting room with the open fire, along with the complimentary fruit cake, sherry, and port. It was very charming! It was also very comfortable despite being the middle of winter - we never felt cold, and didn't even need the electric blankets! There was so much character and history in the property, as with the whole of Portland, and the gardens were gorgeous. Mandy and John were fantastic hosts, there to help us with anything we needed, and the kids loved Lilly the dog. The location was also excellent. We will definitely choose Victoria House next time we visit Portland.
One single bed on wheels moved a bit, but that should be easy to secure and the beds were otherwise very comfortable and warm.

Fantastic 'posh' stay at a very reasonable price. Gorgeous historic bluestone building lovingly restored with period vibe, almost like a stately home visit but on a smaller scale. Free parking on street right outside the accommodation. Central location yet quiet at night. We walked to all the town highlights (foreshore, tram car, dining, pubs, etc) Lush garden, little nooks and crannies to sit and relax. Fabulous lounge with gentle ambient music, soft lighting and open fire each night, along with complimentary fruit cake and port wine or sherry. Fabulous way to have a quiet board game or chat. Friendly, helpful and accommodating hosts Mandy and John, who serviced the room daily and took care of our personal laundry (at a small extra charge). Loved our stay.

Had to leave early and didn't bother with breakfast. I'm sure it would have been great. On arrival the owner was very informative and friendly. Room was cosy and I felt very safe. Able to wander down the road for dinner with family and friends at a very suitable venue.
My only problem where the narrow stairs - must have been difficult for the pioneers living in a two storey house with such narrow, steep stairs. A young female visitor was very nice and offered to help with my suitcase & carry bags. There was nothing at all that I could really complain about - it was just a very enjoyable trip.

The location was perfect for my purpose. Most places were easily reached on foot so I rarely used the car. The authenticity of the building and furnishings added to the experience as I was there to do family tree research. Mandy also provided books with various places and contacts to facilitate my research.
The only issue was the half-flush button on the toilet kept running. So I just had to use the full-flush button. Mandy got onto it straight away by contacting a plumber. Nothing was too much trouble. It was a very minor issue that didn't affect my stay.

Wow! what a unique and lovely place to stay. Staff are extremely friendly. The house, rooms and gardens are gorgeous. We stayed in room 10. It was originally the kitchen and is out in the garden area. The room has everything you need and the shower is hot and has great pressure. We love the cat and dog who come for pats in the garden. Walking distance to cafes and shops. Across the road from a lovely coast walking path. We would definitely stay there again.
That we had to leave , we would have loved to stay longer.

This is quite a quirky but also a lovely old building filled with history and carefully assembled knick knacks. There is also a lovely garden and a sitting room where one can sample sherry or port and a slice of fruit cake in the evenings. It's fairly centrally located in Portland close to a pub, restaurants and the seafront. There is a resident miniature dachshund and a cat. The bed was comfortable and we enjoyed our stay..Our days out were so busy we probably didn't get to fully enjoy all that the property has to offer.
We stayed in Room 11 (family room at rear) which would be quite compact downstairs for a family. While everything we needed was there we did find it had quite a few idiosyncrasies such as a very low washbasin, a couch from which it was almost impossible to watch the TV, an upstairs TV which couldn't be tuned (DVDs only), and a table just outside which was lovely to eat at but which also seemed to attract people to smoke.

Victoria House isn’t accommodation it’s an experience! From the moment we were greeted warmly by our host, and given the tour of the amazing heritage building to the complementary port, cognac and fruit cake in the drawing room with open fireplace , to the amazing Victorian era rooms and facilities. This stay was phenomenal. Unfortunately we were only there for one night. It is worth the drive and we are looking forward to going back. A definite unique experience
We needed another few days here.

If you want to step back in time but with a modern twist, please stay at Victoria House. A very short walk will give you an expansive view of the bay and port. Walk to the next block, and you will find a hotel, a Chinese Restaurant and other shops. Our room had everything we needed with a shower etc. The bed was very comfortable and there were two chairs to lounge in. The room had a heater which, even though when it 10 degrees outside, we didn't have to use it. Loved the touch of the lights being switched on with a cord from the ceiling. There was a separate community lounge room complete with port, sherry and fruit cake. Breakfast, either Continental or cooked, was available for purchase but we didn't use this option.
There was a lovely garden out the back of the house with a seating area but we didn't have time to take advantage of it.

Great heritage bluestone building, lovely furnishings, very comfortable room, excellent breakfast including cooked option, great staff. Evening drink and cake in front of open fire was a bonus, and an opportunity to socialise with other guests. Walking distance to shops, restaurants, waterfront.
Bed was a bit high. Cistern flush a bit fiddly. Otherwise, nothing we didn't like.
