The staff was remarkable and really seemed to enjoy working there. We ate at the restaurant and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. We didn't have time for the Spa but it was very inviting. For those looking for a remote place to watch the Northern Lights they have a special service where the Front Desk keeps a look out and rings your room when they start! Ownership: Special shout out to one of your people working the front desk. He made us really feel welcome. Not sure of his name but he recently moved to Iceland from Czechoslovakia...Great Employee!

The hotel is located near the northern side of a large lake several hundred meters from the center of Egilsstadir. This means you better have a car if you rent a room there and you are very lucky if your room face the lake because the view is magnificent. We were lucky. Our room was very large equipped with more than the standard furniture. This enable us to open suitcases with no need to crawl on the floor. The beds were very good. The shower room was a bit larger than the standard. Breakfast buffet was very good. I would like to refer to one comment frequent in this hotel reviews. The hotel is located in a working farm. Some people complained about smell coming from the barn. I have to say, we stayed there three nights and never smelled anything in the room or anywhere within the hotel. If the wind is in the direction from the barn to the hotel, you may smell something when outside. If the smell is bad or good depends on you. I liked it.
I do not have much to dislike except that the price of the room was a bit high.

Gistihúsið - Lake Hotel Egilsstadir This place has an old cottage vibe but clean and cozy. The staff were really nice and answered all our questions about places to go and the best routes to take. Its right next to a major lake and we hoped to have a good view of it but you couldn’t see it super well from our room or the dining room. There ended up being three of us and they charged about 140 EUR to add another bed to our standard two-twin room. The dinner here was surprisingly really good. We are vegetarians and it’s hard to find good veg food on Ring Road so we were pleased with the offerings here. Lots of places don’t serve plant protein but they had lentils to go along with the cauliflower steak. The curry soup was also excellent. The breakfast was ok I think, not as memorable as the dinner. Also, make sure you take the detour to go see puffins in the East. The drive is really easy from this hotel.

Beautiful location with great views of the lake and mountains. Excellent restaurant for dinner, and friendly open style buffet in the morning where guest comfortably talk with each other, or can keep to themselves if they choose.
The only reason I have this property fewer than all stars, was because the noise that travelled up from the dining room to my room on the third floor that was at the end of the hall next to the stairs that led down to the dining room in the first floor. I heard every chair that was pulled in or out from the table. I was in bed early with a migraine so this was very uncomfortable for me. If you’re an early to bed person, or have frequent headaches and need quiet, I’d ask for a room in the building away from the dining room, or at least at the other end of the hall.

The dinner was fantastic. Food was delicious. We had the five course menu, and each serving was finely prepared, savory, well seasoned and fun. The waiter was funny, which added to the flavor of the evening. Plus, we were seated at a window with a beautiful view of the lake. Breakfast was also good and bounteous. Room was fairly standard for Iceland, from what we saw; small but not crowded, sparely furnished, in good condition, very clean.
Can't think of a thing.

Good hotel right next to the lake. The room has a good size with a kettle and the hot pool (spa) was nice after a long day out (not that you have to pay extra). The restaurant at the hotel was excellent.
The sauna was out of order, so could only use the hot pool for 1000 ISK. They also didn't tell us that they had a northern light wake-up service, which we only found out about the next morning.

Hotel was a very nice hotel, next to the lake and had a great view. Our view from our room was kinda obstructed by a tree tho, but that’s ok, the location still fave some serenity. Room was nice size, bathroom was clean, main lobby was cozy and staff were welcoming. We enjoyed the free breakfast for sure! Hotel is located within a small town so getting by to grab other food besides than the hotel restaurant was easily accessible. The lake next to it was peaceful and was a nice touch to wake up to. Would definitely recommend!

I recently stayed at Gistihúsið - Lake Hotel Egilsstadir during a trip to Iceland and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is located in a stunning location overlooking Lake Lagarfljót, and we were lucky enough to spot the Northern Lights during our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful, providing us with tips on the best spots to view the Northern Lights and ensuring that we were comfortable throughout our stay. The room was clean and spacious, with a comfortable bed and all the necessary amenities. The breakfast buffet was also delicious, with a great variety of options to choose from. One of the highlights of our stay was the hot tub facility, which was situated outside with stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It was the perfect way to relax after a day of exploring the area. Overall, I would highly recommend Gistihúsið - Lake Hotel Egilsstadir to anyone visiting the area. The location, staff, amenities, and Northern Lights spotting opportunities are all excellent, and the hot tub is a fantastic added bonus. I would definitely stay here again.

The staff on the front desk and in the restaurant were friendly and proffessional, our room was a good size with a comfortable bed. The public spaces were all clean and well kept, including the lounge and spa. The location is great for exploring the lakes area and visiting Stodhvarfjordurhe the local port. The restaurant served some good well cooked food with attentive service in a pleasant dinning room that also doubles up as a breakfast room. This hotel offered excellent value for money and I would highly recommend a stay here.
The Spa is only available at an extra charge, it would be nice to include this in the room rate. There was no mini bar. The portion size of the starters was completely out of proportion. A smoked beetroot starter was just a few teaspoons (more like a pre starter) where as beef carpaccio was a full plate of food (like a main course) . My lamb main had a nice flavour but was unfortunatly not cooked fresh (reheated). This did not distract from the fact the meal was still good, but its the little things that make it great!

We had a room on the second floor looking out over the lake, which I highly recommend. It was peaceful and lovely. The breakfast buffet was varied and substantial. We ate dinner at the restaurant as well and chose the tasting menu, which was fantastic. We also took advantage of the spa and hot tub they have, although it does cost extra, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
We ordered a lunch to take with us the day we left. For the money they charged, the quality of the sandwich should have been higher.
