The rooms were traditional Japanese tatami rooms that were well furnished and clean. The owner was exceptionally friendly and kind, and allowed us to store our luggage before check-in. The location is near a famous temple. For a city like Kyoto, this ryokan offered great value for money.

The futons had a slight smell (a bit musty maybe), but it wasn't too bad. The walk to Kyoto station is pretty far but quite a nice walk.

“A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn that offers a cultural experience and a more personal atmosphere than a hotel” This sums up our very serendipitous experience at Kamoya Ryokan! My husband & I loved our stay in this Ryokan. The location was perfect, right behind the Sanjusangen-do Temple & a 10 minute walk to their local downtown where you can find convenience stores, traditional Japanese eateries, quaint coffee shops, sake & wine bars & the Kyoto National Museum. Our room was on the 3rd floor walk up & has a comfortable ryokan appeal — very clean, with a futon on tatami mats, a functional bathroom & and a small balcony with a nice & serene view of rooftops & surrounding mountains. This section of Kyoto is very quiet, very conducive to meditation, long walks & just taking it all in… Our host, Aki, was very friendly & helpful with recommendations of where to go…domo arigato gozaimasu, Aki!! Overall, we would love to come back to this peaceful place if we get a chance to visit Kyoto again!

We were not used to sleeping on a futon on the floor. So, our backs & side would hurt at times

Aki-san, the owner, is a one-man operation. He's not always around, but can be easily contacted and solved any issues we had very quickly and graciously. Even offered us umbrellas on a wet day - he's truly the highlight of the stop. The japanese style rooms were large and comfortable for two people.

I would recommend any non-japanese travellers have an understanding of Japanese politeness beforehand - You may arrive to no host, and it is expected that you understand that you must remove your shoes, and leave them in the public shoe box by the entrance, amongst other things. Note that it is not a "true" Ryokan in the sense of daily meals and such, this is just tatami room accommodation. Still worthwhile, just not a full ryokan experience.

The Ryokan owner was a happy, welcoming person. He was on-site immediately to give us information. Our rooms were adequate. If you are a large person, I do not recommend the single room. But the double rooms were comfortable. The Ryokan is nicely located. It's not walkable from Kyoto station, despite what the description says. Definitely recommend taking a train. It's only a 7 minute walk to the closest station. It is also only 1 stop away from Inari station, where Fushimi Inari Shine is located. You can head to Nara without having to go to Kyoto station. Be sure to visit the shrine right by its It's a hidden gem. The Ryokan is not flashy, but very comfortable and affordable. Futons were comfortable.

No onsen on site. A little dated.

The owner was extremely helpful and communicative. It was easy to check-in. You can leave your luggage there before check-in. Just down the ally behind the ryokan is a tiny okonomiyaki restaurant. If you're staying here, you must go and eat there. It is definitely a hidden gem.

If the cleanliness standard could be picked up just a little, this place would be perfect.

It's a very cozy accomodation. We really enjoyed our stay here and we were happy to experience a ryokan. The host is very nice and friendly. You have all the amenities at the reception area, a frigde for common use, umbrellas to use for the day if it's raining. Also, the towels get changed daily.

The location is a bit further from the locations of interest. Also you need to walk at least 5-7 min to a bus and about 10 min to a JR train station or metro line. If you feel that is too much for you, then you might not like it. On the other hand, the neighbourhood is very calm and quite. It's nice ti wind down from the day travelling.

We enjoyed the neighborhood away from urban Kyoto station area. Loved the Japanese style ryokan with easy check in and very helpful friendly manager of the inn. He gave us a map of the area and recommended place to visit in the area. I appreciated the simplicity yet having all the amenities needed for the stay. Fresh new towels every day and AC works really well on hot humid Kyoto summer.

The futon mattress was a bit hard for my back but I got used to it by the third night. A softer and futon mattress would have been more comfortable.

Me and friend stayed here on our first trip to Japan, we wanted a "Ryokan experience". The host of this Ryokan was just wonderful, so friendly and great communication before arrival, clear instructions of how to get there etc... He met us there when we arrived an took our heavy bags to the 3rd floor, a very sweet, kind friendly host 🧡 The room itself was very clean, minimalist as expected but very comfortable, tea available on the ground floor. Kiyomizu-dera Temple just round the corner, well worth a visit.

It was perfect for my one night stay in Kyoto! Very charming place I slept very well. He wasn’t there when I arrived so he made time to stop by and say hello, offered me a map with local temples and places to visit, and the next day when my eSIM stopped working he was kind enough to let me use the wifi after I checked out and talked to me while I figured things out. Exceptional service! I would love to stay again!

Aki San was extremely helpful and kind to us. When our AC broke down for some unknown reason, he stopped by to make sure we were comfortable and did his best to fix it. He even brought us an additional heater just in case. We had all sorts of important amenities at our disposal and we were welcomed in the true fashion of japanese hospitality. Although short, our stay was truly pleasant!
