The Astoria is an Art Deco Gem, a hotel that one will not forget. - charming and romantic. Its location overlooking the river, near some important historic buildings is perfect. One reads comments about the age of the hotel, which should come as no surprise as it is a (very well maintained) 1926 "living museum" of the art deco period, which has done exceptionally well at maintaining its original fixtures. The common rooms have beautiful parquetry floors, lovingly polished, and the carefully matched Deco furniture in the "Superior" room where I stayed with its balconies overlooking the river and its valley added to a sense of bygone elegance. The staff were pleasant and readily rectified a booking error in my room. The beautiful sitting rooms are often peopled by guests in the evening who seem apt to join in a conversation with others. The dining room is a remarkable vintage work of architecture and period decoration, where a classic hotel style breakfast is laid out every morning.

I have very few complaints, but was disappointed with the Wifi signal in the hotel - something that needs work.

This is a priceless treasure - a historic, well preserved property right on the river, steps away from the main sites, yet quiet and cozy. Very welcoming and helpful staff. Super comfortable bed. Large room with wraparound view - ask for number 409! Great varied and fresh breakfast. Absolutely terrific value for money. So glad we chose this heritage gem in Coimbra !

Internet is only available in the lobby. Water pressure is not very strong in the room we had.

The hotel was charming maintaining most of the original features and furnishings. Very clean with friendly staff, great location within Coimbra. Location made it easy to travel to both Lisbon and Porto via train. Wide variety of foods and drinks to choose from for breakfast. Honest bar available in the hotel lounge, if required. Wi-fi availability restricted to communal areas only within the hotel and not unavailable within the privacy of your own room. Plenty of drawer storage for clothes however shortage of coat hangers within the wardrobe.

The location of the hotel is excellent, and the building is old, beautiful and fascinating. The architecture, furnishings, and finishes are all from a bygone era and a joy to see (the elevator alone is almost worth booking the Astoria). Like all of the public spaces the dining room where breakfast is served is beautiful. Our room was reasonably sized and the furniture was period appropriate. Desk staff were warm, welcoming and professional.

For all of its good points, the Astoria is faded from its former glory and in need of some TLC. Our bed was not terribly comfortable; the pillows were particularly poor. Breakfast was adequate, offering many choices and plentiful amounts, but the food was not of the highest quality.

The Astoria is a fine Art Nouveau Hotel with many original features and furnishings. Yes, it is a little ‘tired’ and in need of some new carpeting, improved wifi, new tv’s (a fine dressers in our bedroom had an old, huge tv on it - ugh!) and a repaint but. …. It’s a hotel with character, splendid rooms, both the bedrooms and the public lounge and dining hall, with delightful details (note the aesthetically pleasing, well-designed curtain pegs and the handles on the dressers. For all this and much more I’m singing it’s praises and hope someone will put some investment into this fine hotel - without destroying its fine features.

It is an amazing experience to stay in this "Belle Époque" hotel. Which is almost in its original state. The welcoming was with sparkling wine and some sweet pastries. There is also a honesty bar, where you can sit and have a drink. Beautiful breakfast room. The hotel lays in the center near the train station. The staff was also very friendly. 24 h reception.

You are not there for the television, but it had only three portugese channels. A little bit of renovation would do the hotel good.

Perfect location for 1 night on a train trip from Porto to Lisbon, with a great view even from the bathroom. Good range of restaurants nearby, and a beautiful scent from the linden trees outside the main door. If you like a bit of old-fashioned style, you will love this place.

The breakfast was a little dull, but the breakfast room was absolutely worth experiencing. Personally, I would have enjoyed more local foods - although there was one Portuguese cheese that was delicious!

The hotel has retained its original art nouveau style, very charming. This is a good reason for chosing it. Very close to the train station. In the lounge there was an «honest bar» where you could help your self to a drink and tick off on a note to take to the reception.

The breakfast was disapointing. With so many good bakeries in town, they could easily have made it better. They were too eager to clear our table, before we were finished.

This is a wonderful place. It is truly a "Grand Hotel," in a way that even the most expensive new luxury hotels will never be. It isn't sleek or modern, but it is a treasure. The beds are comfortable, the linens are clean, soft and white, the water gets hot quickly, the blankets are warm and in the morning there is breakfast! We had a lovely time exploring the historic building, having a drink at the honesty bar in the common area, admiring at the details of the wood panel walls, carved moldings, heavy drapes and all the antiquated design features- writing desks, a phone booth, among others. It has the air of a movie set come to life, and it was a highlight of our visit.

There is no designated parking, however there is a lot just across the river where you can park overnight. It is about a 10 minute walk back along well lit sidewalks. We parked around 10 and picked up the car around 2:30pm, and it cost about 2 euros.

This hotel has lots of vintage charm and is a lovely change from the bland, look-alike big chain hotels. For a vintage fan like me, this is a rare Art Déco gem and it retains many of the original features from the 1920's/1930's. You enter through an original revolving door to see a wood-panelled lobby with Art Deco furniture, signs and decoration, even the elevator is charming! we had a romantic room with a comfortable, though not large, bed, vintage Art Deco furnishings, plenty of air conditioning to combat the hot Coimbra day, and THREE gorgeous balconies with amazing views of the river and the city. The Romantic Room even included a lovely surprise in the afternoon! The breakfast buffet was plentiful and varied!

Their wi-fi isn't the fastest but does what it's meant to do.
