We loved everything about this hotel! From the arrival where we were greeted with champagne to the wonderful food and bars offered within the hotel to the OUTSTANDING spa staff, we could not have had a better trip. We visited during a 3 day storm so we had plenty of time to use all of the hotel amenities and could not recommend them more. The rooms were spacious, had balconies (for those rare, clear moments) and had modern, clean bathrooms with luxurious showers. While I did not eat at the restaurant for dinner, 6 of our other friends did and absolutely raved about the food. The quality and value, coupled with excellent staff made for an amazing trip. Only a 5-minute walk from so many things to do in Old town and a 10-minute cab ride to the more commercialized, shopping area of town. We would only stay at the Castanheiro hotel again if we return.

The breakfast buffet was exceptional, the staff responsive and courteous. The front of house staff were welcoming and informative in terms of bus journeys / tours etc. The hotel is beautifully appointed, and despite the small upstairs terrace and pool we always managed to enjoy a sun lounger. The terrace bar was useful and prepared enjoyable lighter snacks. We enjoyed a complimentary upgrade to a suite - which was on 2 floors with beautiful wooden floors and a twin aspect bedroom, and 2 bathrooms.

Perhaps some electric mosquito deterrent in the courtyard dining area, despite repellant spray - they feasted on me. Sadly this drove us away from supper outside, although there was of course the indoor dining room, however there was no subtle lighting and it lacked atmosphere and ambience. Coming home !

Absolutely gorgeous place. Pictures don’t do justice to it. Beautiful rooms, amazing spa & indoor pool and a gorgeous roof top! The view from the bar/pool is breathtaking (especially at night). The breakfast buffet was perfect - variety of delicious options. Location couldn’t be better! One of my best stays in Funchal!

Excellent, central location with good facilities; front of house staff absolutely bent over backwards to help us with reservations and information. As a result we managed dinner in two places that were ostensibly full, and we made a good choice on a day walking trip with their guidance. They were knowledgeable and persistent. The place has a bit of character, is well maintained and spotless - in a historic building on a quiet street - and we found it a relaxing and easy-to-use base. The rooftop pool/bar has great views over the city. Altogether a relaxing, comfortable and lovely place to stay.

The staff in particular are what sets this hotel apart from a lot of others – very friendly, welcoming and keen to make sure the guests enjoy a great experience. The food was excellent and we ate there on 4 nights out of 7 – the Black Angus steak was probably the best we’ve ever eaten, so we recommend you try that if you get the opportunity - everything reasonably priced too. The Junior Suite room was a generous size, with a great bathroom and walk In shower, but the balcony had a disappointing outlook – so check view that you will have when booking if that’s an important feature for you. The location is excellent, as everything within Funchal is within easy walking distance – we recommend the photographic museum (only two minutes from this hotel), which we “stumbled upon” by accident and doesn’t seem to get much publicity, it was only €3 entrance, and again, the staff there were superb– you don’t need to be “into“ photography to enjoy it, it’s more of a very interesting history lesson. One of the best features of the hotel is the rooftop area which includes a lovely pool (solar heated, not traditionally heated) and a jacuzzi. When the weather is suitable, the bar there is also open and serves excellent Club Sandwiches! There is also an indoor health spa which is apparently excellent, although we didn’t try, so can’t comment.

We booked a Junior Suite with balcony, but the view was overlooking offices on side street behind the hotel, and the room itself wasn't as light as I expected from the photos on the website.

Full breakfast which offered vegan and lactose free options. Beautiful location with a rooftop bar, albeit the service was a bit slow. The infinity gives views to the ocean.

From our room, we could our neighbours in their bathroom. The waiting staff could be a bit impatient but it is probably because of language.

Reception staff were exceptionally good. Our first room was noisy and the bed was too hard for our liking. They moved us to a lovely large room with a nice soft bed. The facilities were generally of a very high order, and the location is superb - within strolling distance of the centre of Funchal, but still tucked away on a peaceful street. The restaurant was high standard, and the indoor and outdoor pool areas were wonderfully relaxing.

While there is a lot of lovely outdoor space, the indoor bar facilities were a little bit small for the number of guests, but this is a minor criticism given the excellence of the rest of the hotel and its staff.

Very smart hotel in central funchal location. Staff very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Very nice public spaces in which to relax. Great bar. Indoor pool and steam/sauna in basement. Good breakfast. Good value for money. We would definitely stay here again if returning to fFunchal

Roof terrace bar & pool closed for works during our stay which was a pity as other guests told us how fabulous this is when open.

Our room was quite large and could have been spectacular… needed better lounge seating and lighting . The roof top pool was very special but lounge furniture back whips up and hits your back. Probably better to get furniture where seat and back are not connected .hotel staff at breakfast and pool seemed tired … but maybe understandable after long hot season … our stay is late September

Great hotel. I love the boutique style which means - as here - not a boring uniformity (as in standard hotels). Breakfast is amazing, terrace fantastic. I can recommend it.

As so often, sunbeds are blocked by travel fellows who are, I don't know, somewhere else. Seeing sunbeds blocked (for hours while nobody is present) while others try to find a spot drives me crazy. If towels and books (whatever blocks the sunbed) could be removed by staff - after an hour or - would make things easier.
