Everything about our stay was five star plus! This is a rural retreat like no other. A booking at a new venue is always a bit of a concern but the experience here just kept delivering more and more! We followed the sat nav with increasing interest as the journey left the main road and we meandered along driveways through working vineyards. We eventually rounded a corner and, there before us, was a palace! We were warmly welcomed by Francisco who showed us to our lovely spacious room. The public areas were truly unbelievable being so tastefully furnished and full of family treasures and antiques. Open fires had been thoughtfully lit in the drawing room and dining room. We had a good choice of main courses for dinner and opted for duck. The silver service, in fact everything about the dining experience was from a bygone era and was exquisite. The delicious meal was accompanied by a selection of fine wines that originated on the vines surrounding the hotel. After a most comfortable sleep we found breakfast to be to a standard second to none. Spectacular views, first class service and a fascinating history in one of the Douro region's hidden treasures.

Beautiful, elegant palace built in 1804 and owned by the vibrant and warm Contessa Maria. Decorated with portraits and furniture from the family and assorted period items. So much history here. We learned about the family’s loss of the estate in 1974 during the Carnation Revolution and Maria’s determination to repurchase and restore the property after years of neglect. The grounds with its vineyards and fruit trees are bucolic. Dining experience was delicious and elegant.

A few more outlets and brighter lights in guest rooms would help senior guest with less visual acuity.

The entire experience was one of the best we have ever enjoyed on all our trips all over the world. This is indeed a very special place, impossible to single anything out, with the exception of our host, Maria, what a wonderful welcoming lady, our stay was enriched by meeting her! Everything tasted delicious and the kitchen staff were so friendly and helpful. The house & grounds are magical, we could have stayed there for our entire trip (had we not booked so many other places in advance). Looking forward to a return visit, for a longer stay!

We only booked one night, we should have stayed longer!

The house is very nice and you can find furniture from the time of the house, nice decor. You get into the era, that made the experience special. The house is very big so there are a lot of rooms to chill and you can walk outside. We discovered the trails late so we couldn't do it all, but we enjoyed a very nice walk at the end of the afternoon. The set up for breakfast is very nice and the staff is very friendly. The room was very comfortable and big, we had a very good rest. They serve wine if you want to chill on the terrace. The only you will hear is the birds It is close to Lamego, we were for dinner about 20 minutes away which is not bad for the area

The bathroom in our room needed some work, even though the decor was lovely because it kept that old style, the shower and sink features were not that well maintained.

Amazing property. Main building is a classic old Quinta. Sitting rooms/ library are very comfortable.

Dinner, overpriced and OK food service. For €40 per person you should not expect a mediocre buffet. But they have a captive audience. Overcooked pork, salmon. Nobody keeping an eye on the buffet so it’s always running out. I went back 3 times for salad and it was always empty. Then to charge €9 for a basic port is atrocious. You can buy a bottle of great tawny for the price of one glass. Free breakfast was about as good as any other lower priced hotel.

This is an incredibly beautiful property - from the grounds covered in fruit trees (we saw oranges, lemons, peaches and cherries) to the imposing and rather at inspiring rooms in the main house, everything is a feast for the eyes. Our room was a short walk away from the main house, with a slightly obstructed view of the grounds and hills. The bed was comfortable, and the toilet was large and well equipped (yay, bidet!). The breakfast spread is pretty good - hams, cheese, (good) breads, fresh fruit, and more. The buffet dinner was good. Some reviewers have it's not worth the 40 euros per person, but I think the fancy table experience and the time and effort saved in not having to drive to a restaurant alone make up. The food isn't outstanding, but it's plenty good enough. The staff are all superb. Warm, friendly, helpful - everything you want, and absolutely nothing you don't. Highly recommended!

The pillows were not very comfortable. If we were staying more than one night (wish we'd booked that extra night!), we'd have asked to change to something softer.

Beautiful 17 century building sympathetically decorated to reflect the period. Great host good food good wine in abundance Served by the owner herself. There was a roaring fire which added to the period feel. If your desire is for high tech stainless steel and glass this is not for you. Think 4 poster beds and manual wooden shutters complete with creaking floorboard. Yet clean and functional. Opening the shutters to the sight of oranges and lemons nodding in the wind was magical! Breakfast was a feast. Very enjoyable. Not a hot one but there was enough of a selection to please us all We had the freedom to wonder the vast property grounds unrestricted. The gardens are poised to burst into blooms of apple pears plums and figs soon.

The rooms were a bit cold but it’s March in the north so not too unexpected.

An absolute gem! A perfect way to end our Camino! The experience is hard to describe. The house is family run and filled with so much history and love. The grounds are magical offering a chance to escape and relax before jumping back into the real word. Lots to do in the surrounding area (the Duoro River; Shrine to our Lady of Remedies) And, for those who didn’t get gifts for friends at home a lovely boutique — scarfs and Port made from their grapes. A totally worthwhile car ride from Porto! Can’t wait to go back.

Nothing.

Climbing a ladder and picking fresh cherries from the trees. Also picking fresh oranges. Walking through the vineyards. We stayed two nights but it wasn't enough time to enjoy the property. The breakfast was good, but we paid for meals and wine at night and that was even better. I recommend eating supper there, but check out what they will be serving. We met a lot of interesting guests at breakfast and supper. It was like being at a dinner party with new friends.

There was no shaded place by the pool. Some people might not like the narrow roads to get there. Parking once there is easy.

This was at the end of our time in Portugal and was the finishing touch to a wonderful holiday. We cannot praise the property enough, it was an experience that will live long in our memories. Whereas most other guests only stayed one night we are so glad we decided to stay three nights. Its so relaxing we didnt travel around and just enjoyed the surroundings and facilities this property has to offer. The room was outstanding, the breakfasts set the day up and the optional evening meal an experience that shouldn't be missed. Finally the staff and owner were so hospitable and friendly. Thank you

We cannot think of anything we would want to change
