Location good with parking.

Only one thing which wasn't exactly a dislike l, more of criticism. The Lad on the Reception let me move rooms as the room I was allocated was very dull and I didn't feel comfortable in it. The criticism is he showed me to the room and let me struggle up the stairs behind him with my case, a pack bag, a large bag over my shoulder, yet didn't offer to help me ! That I would have expected was something a member of staff should do, when they could see I was struggling. His manner wasn't very nice in truth. Unfortunately he didn't have a name badge. The girls on the bar were very pleasant though and one was very helpful getting me extra bath mats as thr shower had leaked onto the floor when I was in it. The food was lovely too.

Staff were great it was like family wRm and friendly and always had a moment to personalize the moment spent with you.gowever the actual hotel needs a renovation immediately it was shabby to say the least stained wallpaper cracked walls for the premier hotel in town was a major disappointment .being a devizes girl the beat was always rhe best the food and staff far from disappointed vut the rooms and decor .well what a shame wadworths sees no value in such a landmark of history.fix the decor and instead of contractors the rich and famous could and should return .please it's such a wonderful historical setting

The settings shabby stained furniture and cracked walls stained wall0aper

-Really friendly, helpful staff -Very central location of the hotel -Plenty car parking -Lovely tea & coffee making facilities in room & yummy biscuits 🍪 provided -Lovely toiletries available in bathroom & replenished too Bedside lights would have been a great addition to room 30 Excellent variety of cereals & items available on the full English breakfast too. & it was served attractively & was hot & delicious; quality produce used. Lovely to see the bread covered & it was really tasty & the toaster worked so efficiently. Toast was cooked to perfection & unlike other hotels, the bread didn’t need to be put back in the toaster to cook properly!! Dinner - bread selection to start was delicious, as was the steak & ale pie with seasonal greens, chips & gravy. Excellent meal 😀

Lighting in room.

Lovely historic hotel in a central location with parking. Room was ready earlier than stated which was a bonus. It was quite a small room but it was very clean and had everything we needed. We had lunch on arrival and this was tasty and good quality, served promptly. Bar staff were happy to give my husband tasters of the beers to help him choose which one to have. Plenty of options for breakfast in a light, spacious dining room.

The sash mechanism on one of the windows was broken so the window wouldn't stay open. It was hot so this was a bit of a negative. No aircon in such an ancient building although there were free standing fans available in the room.

We liked The Bear , it is a traditional town centre hotel with a lot of character . Our room was clean and comfortable , breakfast was good and parking in a town centre location is a bonus . The only slight glitch was that the Bear does not serve food on a Sunday evening , we went as suggested to their sister hotel , The Black Swan , but they were so busy that they could not take any more bookings . We went into a bar in the Square but that was playing loud music so we had to default to the local Wetherspoons , it was ok but we had hoped to have something a bit more special on the first night of our West Country holiday . The moral of this tale is if you are in Devizes on a Sunday evening do not leave it too late to eat in the town. That apart we liked The Bear and both agreed we would be happy to stay there again in what is a nice town .

Lack of food choice on a Sunday evening .

Location was excellent, next to the market square, carpark at the back of the hotel had lots of spaces available and was free to hotel patrons. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant and were very impressed with our food, the service was quick and the food excellent. Breakfast in the morning was the same great service, polite staff always willing to help. Hotel building was old and quirky and had lots of interesting history.

I’m not sure I could find anything I didn’t like … maybe in our room there was not enough room to get out of bed as there was one too many chairs at the end of the bed Room 6

Our breakfast was delicious ! We were a party of eight and the lady serving us kindly arranged the tables so we could all sit together. She provided us with lots of tea and coffee so everyone could help themselves to hot drinks as and when required. We were able to pick and choose from the extensive breakfast menu and it was all served freshly cooked and piping hot. We also ate desserts in the bar in the evening and they were delicious and well presented. All members of staff that we came across were polite and helpful and some went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable.

Our only gripe would be that the single bed was a little small for my son but at 6ft4" it was to be expected I suppose! Unfortunately, when we booked there weren't any double rooms left so a single was our only option. The mattresses and bedding were all of a good quality and very comfortable.

Old world charm and home from home feel.

The cold breakfast selection was rather limited, and if you want a croissant it would appear you need to be an early riser. The hotel has 29 rooms but seemingly only four croissants, Obviously delicious if you are lucky enough to secure one, but not as unfortunately as miraculous as Jesus's loaves and fish!!

The food was good and the bedroom clean. Staff were friendly and location good.

We had a disabled twin room, not a problem in itself but we did wonder how anyone with access issues could get to the room with steep spiral stairs and many changes of levels along the corridors. The large bathroom had a very small antiquated shower unit with half door and curtain. The suite and decor were very dated and in need of an upgrade. An overflowing gutter onto concrete outside the window led to a disturbed night, followed by loud delivery staff dropping beer barrels, under the window at 7.45am. Long wait at unattended reception on arrival before we could check in.

We stayed at the Bear to break our journey and to go to Wadsworth. The brewery was two blocks away. Parking spaces were plentiful and spacious. Food was available and as one would expect in a pub. Hot temperatures were the de rigeur. A large fan was quickly delivered to our room. Breakfast was the best ever. Requests were quickly filled by a most pleasant lady. Arrival and departure was fast and efficient and with a smile. Our bags were carried to the room for us.

Only one thumbs down. Bear is a 16th century hotel so no elevator.
