The hotel was located in a great position giving easy walking access to both the pier and the shopping district. The bed was comfortable but squeaked loudly when you get on it.

The property is dated but some could see this as adding to the quirkiness of the hotel. The room I booked had a view of the building across the lane. I could hear the people in the next door room talking.

A great stay. Really good location. An excellent example of a Hotel from the 30's updated tastefully. Very comfortable bed. Good bathroom with a powerful shower. Just the job! Liked the arrangement with a nearby cafe for breakfast. Plenty of very clean towels and lovely stadd. Room kept vey clean during our stay. Excellent first impression on arrival by welcoming staff. Lovely coffee and a first-class coffee making machine in the room.

An on site breakfast facility would be good. Other than this observation - nothing else to add. Repeat business is a sure guarantee of satisfaction! We shall be staying here again!

Location was fantastic

The help we received in regards to a taxi to the airport - or lack of help. The night before departing we arranged with the front desk to have a van to pick us up at 1030am the following day and take us to the airport for our flight. Upon going to the front desk the following morning at the arranged time there was no van. I inquired with reception and was told that they would now call one. Finally at 1050am a regular taxi arrived which was too small for our family. Eventually I needed to order an Uber, and thankfully we were able to get one (we had found it very difficult in LA to arrange Ubers for a family of 5). The front desk/reception couldn’t have cared less for our predicament, or the fact that we had ordered a van the night before. Not very helpful at all.

I love everything about this historic gem in the heart of Santa Monica. Room 400 was simply divine with ocean views and big lush trees next to the windows. Our room was clean, and we felt safe as there is security at the door. I love the charm of historic building, and they’ve taken great care of it. Everyone who works here is simply amazing. The men and women at the front desk were so extremely nice caring, and accommodating. They went above and beyond! This is our second time staying here, and it was even better than the last with all the renovations. We will definitely be back. Thank you so much for having us.

The room was spacious and very clean. The hotel was also very close to the seafront and various restaurants and shops.

The rooms could benefit from a fridge and air conditioning. They do get very hot but the ceiling fan helps circulate the air. It is an old building so I’d imagine the cost of installing AC is pretty costly. We soon got use to it but a small fridge would have enabled us to stock up on drinks rather than visit the shop daily. Not the end of the world.

The hotel is modest, nothing special, but clean and well-maintained. The staff is mostly very friendly. The beds are large and comfortable, and even the drawer is made of solid wood. The air conditioning works well, and you can also use a ceiling fan. During daily room cleaning, you receive 2 water bottles. Location is fantastic, 5min to the SM Pier (even less to good bars and restsurants around) and 3rd street (main promenade and shopping street). Metro and buses in the same 5min walking frame. Despite some other comments I can say it was not loud at night.

To the general impression, a more precisely vacuumed staircase would contribute.

Fantastic location, convenient access to everything - near beach, shopping, dining, freeway. Staff were friendly enough.

Thin walls, can hear every word from the hallway and adjacent rooms, as well as street noise. Dirty staircase, we stayed five nights, and it wasn’t vacuumed once. We kept track of a Skittle that sat on one of the steps for days.. Might still be there!

Very friendly staff, very clean good size room. The bathroom was already big and well maintained. The Valet parking service was very good also, so I didn't have to worry about having to find a space. I will definitely recommend Carmel and I will stay there again on my next stay in Santa Monica. The Hotel is located super close the the beach and restaurants.

Lobby and corridors look a bit tired and need updating but the rooms are all done up and super clean.

.Location was perfect. Nordstrom was across the street, other name brand stores within a few blocks. The beach was a few blocks away. The pier was also within a short walk. For the price this was a perfect location. The hotel was clean and the staff were helpful and friendly. This is a very old hotel, rooms are small but that did not bother us because we were in there only to shower and sleep. It was clean and that was our main requirement. We felt safe and the valet parking was a plus.

I knew there was no breakfast available at the hotel. The place around the corner they recommend, and give you a coupon for, was not one we would go back to. Didn't trust the cleanliness. I got very sick after eating the carrot cake. There is a Starbucks a few blocks away and we ate there. The elevator was extremely small! Barely room for luggage cart and 2 small people, but like I said, it is a very old, but well kept hotel.

The location is perfect, really close to the pier. If you’re travelling by metro it’s a very short walk from the station. 3rd St Promenade is one block over and has plenty of nice shops and places to eat. Staff were really polite and helpful. The room was average size with coffee/tea facilities and water which was nice to have.

The property feels quite run down and rather expensive for the amenities. You’re basically paying for the location. The carpets were not very nice and should be ripped out entirely. The walls have been painted over so many times in an attempt to refresh them, our door always got stuck from the layers of paint.
