I like Taranto. It’s a city that has been much criticised but I really like the historic centre. Although it has been neglected for many years it is, in my opinion, a fabled land of wonders, an important city in Magna Grecia to which the passage of time and the modern world hasn’t been kind. There are many magnificent abandoned palaces in the historic centre, some beautifully restored monuments and overall I find it a remarkable and enchanting place. Perhaps more so because so much of it is abandoned. Don’t expect the romance of Tuscany, this is a gritty city but it is an intriguing and atmospheric place. And there is romance here, a different romance of crumbling magnificence framed by views of a shimmering ultramarine sea. Within all this grit there are many wonders to be found like the Capellone di San Cataldo and ancient Greek ruins just below street level that various people we met were proud to show to us. That’s why I liked Arcangelo Hotel. The old city is all about survival and grit and Arcangelo is a sympathetic and carefully restored building at the entrance to the old city; one of a number of activities that are contributing to the revival of this city. Arcangelo is surrounded by many buildings waiting their turn and this hotel offers a glimpse of the grace of what once was. I liked the lovely cooling and soothing interiors, the stone floors and stone vaulted ceilings. The decor was understated and elegant, the bed large and very comfortable. Everything was very clean, the Wi-Fi and air conditioning excellent. The breakfast was simple but good and perhaps my only criticism was our bathroom was very compact - completely functional and nice but a little too cosy. All things considered however I think it’s an excellent base to explore the city.

As previously mentioned the bathroom was compact and I managed to elbow myself a couple of times. but it wasn’t a problem - any small negatives were far outweighed by the positives.

We opted for the room with the terrace right off the room (in the pictures, it's the room to the right that doesn't show a metal balcony, and has a cloth roof), and enjoyed it very much; it was large, held a large table and chairs, faced the clock tower, and expanded the size of our room significantly. The room was pleasant, and bed comfortable. Some neighborhood noise added to the authentic feel of the location, and always ended early. The location was on the far end of the old Taranto island and it was short (20 minutes, maybe) and interesting walking through Taranto Vecchio along Via Duomo and side alleys, or scenic walking along the waterfront promenade, when we wanted to get to the new town for the museum or passeggiata. (Note: on Via Duomo, we enjoyed stopping for a drink at Caffé Letterario.) There were good seafood restaurants right on the square in front of the hotel (see photo for recommendation.) Breakfast was good and varied. Considering it's parking limited, we had no trouble locating it and dropping off and picking up our luggage; the parking was reasonably priced, easy to find and within 10 minutes walk. We were glad to stay in this area early in the upgrades for the 2026 games.

We were thrilled with the design of the room, especially the use of traditional materials from the Puglia Region. Upon arrival we were treated to a relaxing beverage and confection on the rooftop patio by purchasing host Fabio. We enjoyed a restful sleep in the well appointed room, on a very comfortable bed, and a quiet room which was well isolated from street noise. The hotel staff was very helpful, prompt and courteous. The breakfast was enjoyable, with a good selection of baked goods, juices, meats and cheeses, and coffee made to order. Parking was not assigned, but was readily available around the Piazza at no cost. The hotel is located close to several excellent seafood restaurants serving the freshest seafood, and is only minutes by foot from major Taranto historical and modern commercial attractions.

There were no aspects of this hotel that we found unattractive or objectionable. We will stay here again when in the region.

Excellent location, in the old city, near major landmarks and good restaurants... (unfortunately, the old city is a bit run down, which impacts negatively the charm of the location) Very good breakfast, friendly staff, helpful recommendations as to what to visit and when.

The listing says "parking available", meaning you can find it in the street if you're lucky... ...but that's not what you expect when you check the box "parking" when booking a place! This is playing with words and this mislabeling is becoming a widespread issue on Booking.com listings and I'm not sure who's responsible for that: the hosts or the platform...

The hotel is charming and very well located in the old city. Staff is dynamic and welcoming: Mrs. Francesca called the museum to double check the opening hours (btw the museum collection is AMAZING), outdoor parking place was organised for us upon request (smooth, easy procedure). We received a welcoming -and tasty- ice tea&cake upon arrival and in addition we have been upgraded with a room with terrasse :) Important to us: bed was really good quality. Sweet and savoury breakfast with home made cakes (complimenti al Sig. Fabio per la torta di mele)

The overall experience is very positive and I can recommand the place for the location, comfort and the very friendly/efficient staff. One gentle suggestion would be to get the airco less noisy. We needed it during the night because we had to keep the windows shut (church bells ring every hour). Fine tuning this would be great :)

Staff were absolutely brilliant and so helpful and knowledgable, especially the ones we dealt with the most, Favio and Francesca. The room was really comfortable, not huge but with a large balcony overlooking the piazza. The breakfast was the nest we have had in Italia for many many years. And Taranto is wonderful city to explore, with the hotel placed perfectly for this. The archeology museum in Taranto is of the highest quality and awe-inspiring.

We stayed 4 nights & breakfast was great with lots of choice. Although the historic quarter which the hotel is set in, is under going a big renovation process, it is well placed for walking to the working fishing port, the new part of town and there are plenty of lovely fish restaurants within 300-400 metres. There was always free parking spaces outside or across the road. The hotel itself looks to have been renovated recently and is clean and run very efficiently. The staff very helpful and friendly and gave great information about beaches, places to visit and recommendations for eating out and booked restaurants for us. Fabio, Lucrezza (Lulu) & Simon were so lovely & went the extra mile.

We wanted to stay in the old town near the national archeological museum, which was a 20 minute walk. The hotel is in a historic building and carefully restored. We chose a room with a balcony and enjoyed reading there with a beverage, available from room service. The lovely breakfast room has a vaulted ceiling. The breakfast had a good selection including fruit, eggs, sliced meats and yoghurt in addition to a variety of cakes and cornetti. There were good restaurants (Il Porto!) and cafes nearby. We will stay again on our next visit to Taranto.

This is a beautifully restored and tastefully decorated hotel in the Centro Storico of Taranto, nestling amongst some pretty delapidated buildings but in front of the Torre dell'Orologio. It is so incongruous which adds to its fascination. It was close to everything we wanted to visit and both Fabio, and Francesca, were very well informed giving us directions and information on everything we wanted to visit. Fabio greeted us warmly and gave us a detailed map and directions and even telephoned to book us in for the guided tour of the Castello. We were given a list of local restaurants so were altogther spoiled. The room was beautiful with a quaint touch of a table and chairs on the balcony. Breakfast was perfect and the cappuccino and cornetti better than many I've had in bars! Sorry I don't know the name of the young man who served breakfast but, as with Fabio and Francesca, he was friendly and helpful. I really hope to return very soon. Thanks to all.

My only complaint is that we only booked for one night!
