From the outside, you wouldn’t guess how interesting and creative a place this is. If you are looking for unique, natural, reasonably priced but high quality accommodation in Vienna, look no further. It’s walking distance from the central railway station and there’s a metro stop nearby. Public transport in Vienna is so cheap & easy to get around. The architect designed rooms are rustic and industrial but luxurious at the same time - from the super comfortable bed, double sink / dressing area & gowns to the multi-function toilet with heated seat! We didn’t use the pool or sauna but it was a great space. We did enjoy the hammocks though with a beer or two, surrounded by plants and vegetables, hens, beehives and vinegar barrels and just soaked up the unique atmosphere. The breakfast, cooked by Steffi, was simple and high quality with the best ingredients, including home-made bread and delicious crispy bacon omelette made with eggs from the resident hens. Do a web search for the Gegenbauer origins, in particular Erwin - from pickle factory inheritor to master of vinegar and much much more. It’s a fascinating story. You will see him busying about in the production area and shop as well as his lovely wife Daniela, who is equally talented and so kind, accommodating and keen to give you all the information you need to make your stay a memorable one. They both speak excellent English and other languages. We have just returned from travelling round Europe for 3 months and this was the most unusual, relaxed, friendly and memorable place we stayed in.

Only that we didn’t stay longer!

The breakfast was delicious, mainly of organic, local and environmental friendly ingredients; the bread is homemade and fresh. It is a very unusual, well thought through sustainable family business in a factory. As a guest you are actually invited to be part of the family if you care to engage. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the friendliness and I felt very much at home. Chickens live in the roof garden which is created with recycled barrels from the factory; the industrial look of the rooms combined with organic and industrial materials, the rough, ecologically, forward thinking architecture are magnificent. Living in this place felt like connecting with your essential needs; natural food, a small sauna and pool, a kitchen with a big table shared with the guests and interesting conversations. Passing bye I would have never expected a magic place like this behind an ordinary façade of a refurbished canning factory. Also interesting is that the space has become an organically organised living and working space as there is still an active vinegar production and a shop integrated in a property which goes back generations. It shows a way forward how to live sustainably in an urban environment. Apart from being a fascinating place it is also good for sightseeing - it is a 10 minutes walk to the Underground - which takes you to the city centre in 10 minutes and allows to connect with architecture new and old, art and music and cultural events. If you love nature - Vienna Woods are only 30 minutes away from the centre and many other possibilities available - just ask the owners how to avoid the tourist trap!

Only little things - and I am sure the owners are interested in that as well! In my room (single) I missed a small table and a comfy chair to read in. Also, being a 72 year old I found the self switching off lights on the stairs good but the intervals too short to get to the top, especially when I was not familiar with the place when arrived. But that's about it really. If you are in need of a lift you ought to contact the owners in advance.

Wonderful hotel, close to the hauptbahnhof, metro, and tram stops, with interesting rooms, lovely staff, and a nice pool. The shop is fascinating too, with all sorts of unique oils and vinegars. Our room was spotless, very quiet, and well air-conditioned despite the 36° weather! The team were friendly, put on a lovely breakfast, offered useful advice, and were very accommodating of our late arrival. One of the nicest stays we've had, and somewhere we look forward to staying again.

Nothing, our stay was as close to perfect as humanly possible.

This is a totally charming place to stay, although it is quite unlike a typical hotel or even B&B. The guest rooms have been decorated in a sort of rustic industrial manner, as befits the nature of the building. It is lovely and quaint to see chickens hanging out on the adjoining deck space, and hammocks have been thoughtfully provided for those who want to chill in the outdoors. I did not use the sauna or pool, but I expect I will next time. The hosts, pinch-hitting for the owners who were on vacation, provided excellent service and company (Anna even shared some of homemade apricot marmalade!). And yes, we bought some vinegar to have shipped home to Portugal. You simply must try the vinegars. Seriously.

Had a little trouble with the stairs because of my bad back, but that's on me. It would have been helpful if the railing were a little sturdier. But again, insignificant quibbles far outweighed by the positives.

This is such a unique place! Everything was done with so much thought, creativity and passion. It's a family-run hotel where you'll get exactly the kind of treatment you'd expect from a family run place - the hosts are unbelievably nice, accommodating and generous. We got what we needed and much more! If you're someone interested in architecture and interior design this place is really fun to check out - they even have a booklet from the architects' about the design of the interiors. The pool/sauna area is 60s interior dream!

Everything was perfect!

One of the most interesting, different and fun places we have ever stayed (4 couples). We stayed in the straw rooms which are completely unique and cosy. Amongst the rustic and industrial heritage there are super luxuries - bathrobes, gorgeous toiletries and amazing showers and loos! The owners couldn’t do more for us. Breakfast of their own produce was amazing, the brewery fascinating and we were so welcome. We even had a dip in the pool and sauna. Highly recommend - we are used to 4 and 5 star hotels but this was one of our most wonderful and memorable trips.

Tiny niggles only. The straw rooms aren’t great soundproofing and showers (which are lovely and hot and powerful) do take some controlling! The guest house is not entirely central but easy access to City Centre by cab or public transport.

I would highly recommend: we had a superb stay. It is located a bit outside the city center, but is easily accessible by the great public transport in Vienna. The rooms are unique and pleasantly designed. Breakfast is superb and consist of homemade artisanal products. Hosts deserve a thumbs up for being great help during our stay. So if you want a quality experience instead of just another hotel, this place should be on the top your list.

Nothing.

Great location within walking distance of the tube station. We stayed in the hay room which was so cozy and quirky. The hosts were lovely, very friendly and gave us lots of tips and recommendations about the best places to visit/eat etc. The breakfast was delicious, especially their own roasted coffee, home baked Sourdough and the homemade granola. It was lovely to meet the other guests too at the shared table. Also loved seeing the chickens on the terrace! We will definitely be back and highly recommend this hotel.

We loved our stay here, we received a very warm welcome and were delighted by our tour of the vinegar brewery and tasting the quality products on sale. The bedroom was most unusual and striking and the beds very comfortable. We loved the unique features, including chickens for fresh breakfast eggs, beehives, and a lovely pool and sauna. The breakfasts were homemade with care and delicious, topped with a glass of fizz! Thank you to Daniela and Erwin for a delightful stay, we'd love to come back!

Very little to say, it was an excellent stay! The mechanical shower was delightful but sometimes a little tricky to get right, though very powerful and hot. The toilet was semi-open plan within the combined bathroom/bedroom, this was not a problem for us, but it might be too unusual for some!

Everything. We loved the rooms: spacious, unique, interesting warehouse-style spaces. We loved having the little pool, and the outdoor area with the hammocks with the sound of the chickens around. The highlight was the breakfast area, like being invited into a friend’s kitchen. The food was simple, fresh, and all exceptional. Served with pride. We’re still craving that Viennese coffee. Great vegan options for our daughter, arranged in advance.

We honestly loved everything about our stay.
