Location: Not that much in Nieul-sur-Mer but it's pretty in parts and near to La Rochelle and the Île de Ré, also to some coastal villages which have restaurants. It was lovely and quiet at night. The B&B is in a gorgeous, very old house that feels as if it has been decorated and furnished with a lot of care, right down to the interesting coffee pot. It is on quite a small site as it's in the centre of the village. There is a small but densely planted, beautiful and eclectic garden. Philippe is a very helpful host in terms of recommending things to do, places to eat and so on. He provides a delicious breakfast too, providing you like cake! (I do). Bonus points for having tortoises.

The street outside the B&B is narrow and has other people parked in it which made getting out really hard. But there is other parking in the village only a short walk away.

Philippe the host did his upmost to make us feel so welcome! Can not thank him enough! We were so tired from our long drive! We arrived quite late and had to drive out for food but managed to find it again in the dark. Breakfast was a great spread but unfortunately with teeth braces I didn’t get to eat most of this! So sorry to Philippe for all his effort. Would highly recommend because the house itself is just stunning. So much to take in and the garden! Wow just wow! Thanks Philippe. We loved our stay.

the property was beautiful with artworks and antique furniture. the garden was magnificent and renovation work was complete. all in all the property was very special. the breakfast was well thought out and delicious. parking on site. we also had some great recommendations from the host about things to do. The warm weather made going to Il de Re island a must and we had some great swims.

could not make a tea in the room. I fully understand why which is due to how the rooms are laid out.

Quirky beautiful old French villa with a gorgeous garden comfortable bed fabulous shower and breakfast very helpful host and welcoming

Very hot weather and a fan would have helped to make it more bearable at night that was the only very slight improvement

A superb listed house in a delightful village close to the centre.

The stairs to the bedroom were steep and dark and the bathroom lacked shelving to put things on, otherwise perfect

Taken back to the 17th century, everything authentic right down to the crockery and cutlery, comfortable and classy. Gardens were exquisite and our host was extremely knowledgeable and charming....

An interesting and difficult review to do. The hotel only has two rooms and is generally decorated in a style that is in keeping with the age of the property. Philippe was very helpful, with regard to nearby restaurants, parking in La Rochelle, what to see on Ile De Re and providing maps etc. He even called a restaurant to ensure we had a good table and an aperitif.

The driveway is very difficult to navigate unless you have a small car – all of the warning lights on my car were flashing red and it was difficult to know whether this was the result of nearby flowers or something more damaging. Exiting into the road was also tricky. Our room had a private bathroom, but the listing did not make it clear that it was private, but not en suite and involved venturing out of the room onto the landing. The room was a double room, but was small with not much room for cases. There was a wardrobe, but this only had 2 hangers in it. When we arrived, we were told we could use the terrace area, but were not told anything about an executive lounge. There was a room between the kitchen and the breakfast room, but this seemed to be the owner’s room. When we stayed, both guest rooms were being used, so there were 4 guests and breakfast involved some bread (with home made jams), 4 pieces of brioche, 4 slices of 2 different cakes. When one of the guests asked if there was more brioche, there wasn’t. The subsequent days had a similar breakfast without any brioche, but by the last day, we felt that some of the cakes were getting a little old. It would have been nice to have pastries or croissants.
