At a good location at Sasso Barisano, surrounded by great restaurants and just opposite the bus stop for busses going into the sassi. You can just take the bus from the bus or train station in Matera central to reach this hotel. Just a short 15 min ride. 15 min walk to new town where you can shop. The terrace outside our cave suite has a great view of Matera and it is just opposite the small piazza where one of the car chasing scenes of the last Bond's movie was made. Breakfast served was great as well. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They give recommendation of good restaurants and helped us with the reservation.

From arrival to departure Saverino and Rosalina took care of all our needs with a smile. Thank you both from our hearts. We were even upgraded on arrival much to our surprise. Fra Sassi is a delight, clean, cool, romantic and everything you can need. Location views exceed the photos.that brought us here..the breakfast was fresh daily and plentiful. We didn't want to leave! Matera is a spotlessly clean city. Can't recommend it highly enough 11 out of 10!

Nothing...but you need strong legs for all the climbing of this ancient city ! The heat makes it a challenge and there is ALOT to see

This is 2 hotels (Fra i Sassi and ai Terrazzini) together. Beautiful location with views of Matera from the majority of the room's terraces / balconies. Big rooms, comfy beds. Only charged me 25 euro for my dog to rest in the room with me. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Great continental breakfast. Short walk into the main piazza of the town for tourist things to see and to obtain lunch and dinner; however, note a lot of the walking is over uneven paving stones in roads or on steps. Plan your footwear accordingly.

The hotel's location in the ZTL means you had to figure out how to get from the train station or parking lot to the hotel. (The hotel's recommended parking location can coordinate a ride (10 euro charge) to the hotel.) Plan for walking with bags over uneven ground to the hotel.

Directions to car park (paid) were unclear, as street name and car park name different to those provided, which was quite confusing.

The staff were fantastic, friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. As soon as I expressed interest in some of the activities listed on the website, they contacted me asap via WhatsApp and connected me with the best facilitators. The view from our room was amazing. We loved the shower and bathtub.

Breakfast was good, although the only egg options they had were boiled eggs (we loved a good eggs anyway option). Some more veggie options would have been nice too! But we know this is normal for Italian breakfasts.

we got the topmost room which was a bit of hike, there was no balcony though the room description said so, there was no heads up about how difficult the walk from parking lot to hotel would be , we got very lucky to run into the receptionist on our way as we were struggling with our luggage and te helped us, we would be lost otherwise as it’s up and down a lot. we ended up taking the transfer service on the way back.

These rooms set in a renovated cave home were fantastic. We loved our stay here. It was clean, comfortable, plenty of space. The breakfast each morning was great - a good and very tasty variety of food to start our day. The staff are really friendly and always on hand if you need anything. We were surprised at the space of our “apartment”. A great little terrace outside our door gave us a beautiful view of the old town.

The room was very nice-cool, clean, quiet and very comfortable.(in a cave) Breakfast each morning was lovely-with really pleasant staff and a large selection of food to choose from.All local and very tasty. The staff were lovely-very friendly and helpful. Location was excellent. One evening we had "aperitivo" on the terrace-would recommend this. Drinks were really nicely presented and the array of snacks could have been a meal in itself!! And not at all expensive.

An amazing boutique hotel in the hart of Matera. The rooms are in the caves and offer coolness throughout the day. The breakfast is plentiful and the owners are very helpful (they even brought us back to the central parking spot when the shuttle bus was not available).

I can not imagine that anyone could find something to dislike

Loved staying in this unique cave room in the heart of Matera. Very spacious, and equipped with everything you need. Great outdoor spaces to enjoy. Very walkable to key sites and many dining options. The breakfast was so delicious, with the most amazing fresh dairy products.

No parking, but not available in the historic Matera area so must plan in advance. Late check-in beyond 8pm will incur a fee.
