Great location in the sassi area. Such a great view from the hotel, so I didn't have to go far from the hotel to see the morning/night view of the sassi. Quite the experience of living in one of the "cave room" as well. (But the room was darker and more humid than I thought. It's all about the experience) The staffs were really nice and friendly even without English. They helped me carry my luggages when check in and out. Especially a driver, who provided a transfer to the hotel, showed me around the neighbourhood quickly and took some photos of me when I got there, and also took me to a nice focaccia place. Wish I could speak Italian.
There were ants everywhere. Maybe because my room was on the gound floor. I needed to store my snacks in a refrigerator. Finding ants swarming my thing was traumatic to be honest. Also I found a worm once. For me, who really don't like insects and usually not find ones in my apartment, the room was not quite comfortable in terms of that. Also, the bathroom didn't look clean and organized. The water flowed outside of the "bathroom" as there was nothing to stop it. (and there were ants as well) The furnitures looked old and were not quite clean, but okay since I wasn't at the hotel all the day. FYI, bed was good. I'd ask for another type of room (if any) in case there is a next time. Anyway, good experience and nice meeting good people there!

They are very responsive on the spot: we decided to stay one more night, so we could have left our luggage at the reception after first check-out, and when we returned later, they prepared another room for us, even if we didn't reserve it in advance.
When booking a room, it's a bit confusing that the photo next to the room you book is not the one you'll get on site in the end. At first, we booked a bright, windowed room with a view, but in return we got a full cave apartment, which surprised us at first ... but it was a good unexpected expirience after all. There was only this small misunderstanding about the reservation.

Oh this place! I've read a couple of mixed reviews about it and was a bit unsure what to expect but to me this hotel was one of the best stays of my life. According to the staff, we were originally booked for a cave room but this was easily changed when we asked to switch for a one with a view (we stayed end of December, off season but still). The room was not large but perfectly enough and spotlessly clean. Sure the furniture was not the newest, but together with high wooden ceilings, double windows with a view of Matera and a shower build in a wall, it just added to the charm. Excellent breakfast. Warm AC. Overall, an amazing stay. Thanks Hotel Sassy team!

Our "cave room" was fantastic, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Great views from our window and from the hotel premises. Also the best breakfast we had in Italy by quite a margin, with everything from newly baked foccacia to fresh fruits. The staff was helpful with informing us on where to walk to see the most of Matera. No luxury hotel, but everything we wanted from a hotel in Matera.
We should have stayed more than one night! Also, if you have difficulties with walking or have a lot of luggage, you might consider a more accessible hotel due to the location (but all of the Sassi/old town is like this).

Amazing location in the Sassi. Stairs to reach it and a little hard to find until you get your head around Matera map. The hotel’s instructions for parking were helpful. We stayed 2 nights and had upgraded to a balcony suite which was located next to the hotel - excellent views and large rooftop deck for evening drinks. Large living room and a bedroom both with good sized windows. Older style furnishings and terrazzo floors. Good breakfast buffet.
Our room had the smallest shower ever (hard to turn around). Door to rooftop terrace was hard to close securely. There seemed to be lots of tour groups staying so time your breakfast to avoid their rush. It got pretty busy at the buffet.

Loved that it was like a cave, in Matera. Great location easy walking to all sights and Stassi restaurants. The room was a good size and clean. It had a fabulous view over the Stassi to the Cathedral and also had access to a lovely terrace that overlooks the Stassi. The staff were wonderful especially Domenica who was most helpful and the guys assisted with luggage all the way to the square which was so helpful and generous .
Didn’t know there was air conditioning until the housekeeping switched it on when they cleaned my room. But other than that no issues.

Being in the heart of the Sassi was the best part of our stay. The views were incredible all the way around! We appreciated this little hotel despite its shortcomings - nothing compares to having this cave experience and imaging what Matera was like was back in the day, this was truly special. It was so easy walking everywhere from here. We honestly loved it!
If I have to be technical, getting to the hotel is no easy feat if you have heavy luggage (you literarily can't drag it because of the the cobble stones... and let's not forget the stairs!). We didn't mind it -just something to consider! Bathroom was also extremely small and the complimentary breakfast was basic (so we always ate out). The cleaning staff would come by daily but we thought they really didn't "sweep" the floors - but maybe it was the daily debris from the ceiling...

Scenery is simply INCREDIBLE!!! Staying in a cave was most memorable. The hotel staff recommended a pizzeria nearby that was also amazing. This was an experience I will never forget. Excellent, excellent, excellent.
We reserved two rooms, 510 and 512. 510 had a shower and soaker tub. It smelled nice, too. 512 only had a shower, and the room had a strong mildew smell. But, the rooms were nice (despite the odor in one room), clean linens, and spacious areas.

The location of Hotel Sassi is gold. I honestly think the best views of the entire town of matera was from our balcony which overlooks the beautiful basilica! The room is tiny which we assumed would be considering it’s a 900 year old town. The breakfast area again overlooks the whole town. Staff was very friendly and courteous! Loved our stay here. :) The parking lot is a 10 min walk. But I highly recommend you carry/ travel light cause you’ll be waking thru the town Center and a few stairs which is a all stone.

An amazing experience of staying overnight in the heart of Matera. The room and the bathroom was big and comfy, across the street from the reception and restaurant. Staff was nice, but without a homely, warm atmosphere. Good selection of food on breakfast, good coffee. And amazing view from the terrace!
You need to be aware that it is not possible to get to the hotel by car, quite close, but still you need to walk some stairs. But it is the same in the hole city center. That is why Matera is so special! :)
