Stunning cave hotel, wonderful and professional staff, a real experience! Great porters met our car and carried luggage, desk staff organized our tours, reservations, a meal of bruschetta and wine at the last minute on a rainy evening. Highly recommended!

The hotel is a bit difficult to find. We had a terrific 5 bed family room which was a good size for our group. However it was accessible by 2 narrow flights of steep stairs which were a bit of a concern for an 86 yo member of our group. We knew it was going to be a unique experience but I might have booked our friend into a lower unit if I had known.

Exceptional restored original Matera cave with modern Italian interior design. All rooms r uniquely designed, some even with jacuzzi Family run property offers all imaginable services. We did a homemade pasta in-house course with kids - can only recommend.

Study well the way in to the property and parking options.it would be for all Sassi accommodations the same recommendations. I would use taxi or luggage portier. Have in mind that there is a noise of aircon system in upper rooms which is a minore disturbance. Overall its an amazing travel-in-time like movie experience.

Beautifully restored, historical caves with all of the modern conveniences! The hotel is great but what makes the stay perfect is Marietheresa (Cinzia) and her staff! We relied on Marietheresa for recommendations for visiting the best sites at Matera (there are hundreds!), for the best restaurants (in our price range), and for travel directions in navigating the maze of the Sassi. And don’t forget about the excellent breakfasts, including dessert?! that we enjoyed in the cave dining room each morning. Then instead of a quiet siesta when it gets really hot in the afternoons, we sampled Aperol Spritzes, beers and snacks in the hotel courtyard with Marietheresa (and once with her huge Pyrenees-cross dog). The hotel is away from the crowds that congregate at the Piazzas San Francesco and Sedile and we really liked that! It was a perfect three nights stay.

We did not research the best way to get luggage into the Sassi sine it is pedestrian only, and tried to follow Google - but GPS does not work too well! My recommendation is that you take one of the many Tuk-tuk style cabs as close to the hotel as possible. When you leave you can drive close to the hotel as long as you are entering @ leaving the Sassi before 10 am.

Absolutely awesome stay. The owner was kind and so helpful and helped organise porters for our luggage we would never have been able to carry our bags with all those steps! The room was fantastic, so awesome to be in a cave, a very unique experience. The beds were comfortable and warm, the bathroom was clean and functional. Breakfast was beautiful with an array of homemade items. The location and views from the room were brilliant. A fantastic stay and made our time in Matera memorable.

The room was very nice and exceptionally comfortable. The ambiance of carved stone and cave was quite remarkable.

The check-in was awkward. They don't bother having anyone available for check-in for several hours in the mid-day and just post a sign on the door to come back in a few hours. Really? Is it that hard to have one person available to check people in like a normal lodging establishment? I was able to get a lock pad combination from their phone service which allowed me to leave my luggage in the office and not have to drag it around. Also, 25 minute walk from the train station with luggage up and down some rugged streets laid out like a maze was unexpected -- just be prepared. The place is very nice but difficult to access.

Location was excellent and our room was wonderful thanks. Arranging porters to carry our luggage down to our waiting shuttle was done by the lovely staff. Just amazing walking around and through this city. The room, although with modern finishes, really kept the originality of a cave experience. Buffet breakfast was the best 100% recommend.

Nothing, all was great. Well maybe the 1000 stairs per day but that's Matera.

This stay was one of the best in all my travels. I was treated like family and they went above beyond in their treatment. I cannot say enough about this magical place. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Worth every euro.

Nothing, what’s not to like? The rooms were excellent, the food was some of the best I have ever eaten. The location was stunning. The owners did everything possible to make our trip worth remembering.

Room very spacious and beautiful. Amazing experience staying in this cave. Beds very comfortable. Breakfast fantastic in their restaurant. A lot of choices including meat, cheese, eggs, cakes, fresh yogurt, nice marmalade, croissants, Nutella, and of course coffee, tea, cappuccino, etc. The location was awesome. Near sites and a couple good restaurants and a great pizzeria. Would highly recommend staying here!

Just wow! What an amazing experience staying here, in the heart of Matera, was. The room was spacious, well decorated and very comfortable. The staff are amazingly helpful! We took up the offer of portage to the hotel which was a great idea given there were a heap of steps and so someone could guide us to the hotel. We also booked a walking tour through the reception which was fantastic; the guide was very knowledgeable and made it a great experience. This was a hotel I will never forget, thanks for having us!

To stay in an ancient, refurbished cave in Matera is a must, and this was just even better than expected. We upgraded our room to include spa bath, which was 100% worth the extra money. Such large rooms, incredibly romantic with awesome history. Also located in the Sassi so right in the heart of it all.

Tip: if coming from train station with luggage, definitely have a taxi organised. Or understand the shuttle bus situation. It is a 15min walk however a LOT of steps and e even road through the Sassi.
