I had super wonderful 4-day stay at Beppu Sunline Guestline. It really exceeded my expectation. The location is perfect, near bus stations, Beppu station, etc. A lot of convenient stores and supermarkets, near beach, etc. Its location is really at the centre and accessible to many places. I booked a bunk bed in the female dormitory and I would not exaggerate that I had really comfortable and private area. People were aware of keeping silent, so I did not have any problem with noise or such things like that. There is a working space at the lobby, which is super cool with chill music, creating a really a wonderful traditional vibe ... The onsen is wonderful too. I read many comments about the minus point of the guesthouse is there is no private bathroom before my travelling. But I would say that I did not see it as a big problem. I could enjoy onsen alone with no one (probably my schedule did not coincide with anyone, so I could enjoy the onsen freely and comfortably). It's true that there is no private bathroom but in the spacious onsen, there are several showers, so you can take one of them (even in case there are more people in). The important thing is people are very polite and everyone has their own business, so even I stayed in a dorm with shared bathroom, restroom, etc, I stilt felt very comfortable, Everything is clean, bright, and I rated 10 stars for the guesthouse. The staff is also super friendly and supportive. I definitely loved the guesthouse and fount it really worth my limited budget,

The entire property was so clean! It pretty much has everything. Kitchen was clean & cozy. Huge fridge to store your groceries in the kitchen. The room is quite spacious & the tatami was also very comfortable. They provide good coffee & has vegan ice cream n cookies where muslims can enjoy. Location is great, we walked from the beppu station and you can see the signage from far. Easy to reach. Also, it is near the station where you can buy your day pass in beppu.
You are most likely to share onsen & shower publicly (separated men n women). So if you need your private time, make sure to go early. However, they also provide private onsen too if you want (1000yen per hour) which I found quite reasonable.

What a great spacious building this is, with very generously sized pods in the dorms with excellent privacy. And all of this in an ideal location for the bus to/from Hakata! I would definitely stay here again.
It would be nice to have been able to sit up in the pods but if you are around 180cms, they're a bit too low. I was there on a day in November when the temperature dropped by 10 degrees and you really feel it everywhere, except in the heated front room or the three onsen spaces. There is no heating.

The building is old but the rooms are very clean. No private shower but the onsen is actually pretty good! They have vegan cookies to buy at the reception which was a big plus for me! It was a very unexpected nice surprise! I came earlier than the check-in time to leave my luggage but they let me check in earlier which was very nice! I thought the location was good - although a little far from the train station, it was very close to major bus stations and was easy to travel to the hells and to the airport.
There are some stairs inside the guesthouse - eg from the room to the elevator. If you come with big/heavy luggage, it might be a little uncomfortable.

The lobby design and the front staff are very welcoming, and there are some nice shared facilities to enjoy time with other guests. Car parking ir right in front of the lobby.
Considering the rooms with no private showers, the public bath is way too small. I was also under the impression that the water was dirty, but it could be the natural color of the hot spring. If onsen hopping, the location is quite far from areas of high-onsen-concentration. The guests are reminded to be quiet because the building is old and has poor noise isolation; however the washing machines are in the hallways and used during the night despite the noise, and no rules are written for this. My room happened to be next to them and they were in use well into midnight.

The hotel is well located, near the beach and not far from the station. Great staff and there is a bar where it is possible to socialise, as well as the common area. Great amenities, clean space. The onsen available all night is definitely a plus!
There is no private shower for dorms, you will need to go to the onsen. If you want some privacy or not comfortable showering in front of people that might be a problem. There are quite a lot of guest so it can be impersonal at times.

Very clean and big room with enough storage space. (not be enough for a big suitcase to lock away - but there is a locker) Close location to the sea, nice onsen
A bit poor of an explanation, at least, I also didn't find a good bathroom to brush my teeth/wash face on my floor. Common space is not free to use after check out, so, only staying in the front area is possible - but then you'd have to buy something (e.g. coffee, which I found a bit expensive) But some might like exactly this atmosphere - so it depends on what you want.

It was a very cozy place, the staff was super nice. They have the option to store your luggage until check in, in case you arrive sooner. It was a 10 minute walk from beppu station and the ocean is a 2 minute walk. They have the option to use a private onsen for only 1000 yens if you want more privacy.
Since the place is a little bit old, you can hear the footsteps and voices (pretty much any noise) of the people above, next door and in the hallway.

The onsen is really nice and the dorm was comfortable. The space was big and even though the room is shared, the dorm set up offers privacy. That’s probably my favorite part. I can’t see anyone else’s lights on and it’s quiet. The bed is comfortable and there’s lots of blankets. The free space is clean and there’s a large refrigerator you can use along with full kitchen. This was my second time staying here. If I go back to Beppu, this is where I would stay.

Great location. A two stop bus ride to the station, but walkable. Plenty of restaurants in the area. A nice selection of gin available. Great communal space. Fantastic sound system.
The rooms are very old. I don’t mind that. The only real criticism is that the balcony windows are draughty. The seals need replacing. Also, the curtain isn’t as much a curtain as a net. Expect sunlight in the morning.
