We wanted to try the Ryokan experience and we got just that. We booked the largest room with a private onsen and it was really worth it. Having our own onsen that we could use as much as we wanted was really nice. There are several other shared onsens in the Ryokan that you can book for yourself for a session of 50 minutes. Our room was very spacious and comfortable in its traditional Japanese atmosphere. We used all available futon material to build our own bed and it turned out really comfortable. The hotel itself is beautiful and extraordinarily clean. There is a Japanese garden in the middle that you can see from every room. The dinner and the breakfast were good experiences for us, even though we didn't eat all the food. There was enough variety to keep us happy. The effort that has been made to serve us the best Japanese food was very noticeable.

You might think that when you book the most expensive room with dinner, you would be treated like a king. We were treated well and kindly, but there were strict times that we needed to obey and we were reminded by a phone call when we were late. The food was not served in our room as we had hoped, but in a common dining area, where the atmosphere was really good, so it wasn't disappointing after all. We felt insecure as to how to eat things the right way and what clothing to wear. We did receive some instructions during dinner and very comfortable Japanese clothing was provided in the room, so the staff did what it could and the rest was up to us to figure out. None of these things were really negative and we enjoyed our stay.

I stayed at Ryokan Sennari while visiting Beppu alone. I booked my stay through Booking.com, which included breakfast. I was able to message the property to add dinner to my reservation as well. The ryokan was beautiful, and the staff was very accommodating. The ryokan was not fully booked when I stayed there, and so my room was very quiet and peaceful. There is an amazing garden at the center of the ryokan, which the dining room and rooms look out over. It feels like you're not even in the middle of a city! I barely heard the trains even though it is so close to the train station. There are 3 private onsens that you can use while staying here. Each one has a morning and evening sign up sheet, so you can reserve your timeslot in advance. The food was amazing! The dinner was a multi-course meal, mostly consisting of fish. There was always at least one staff member who spoke English, and since I am not Japanese, they would give me instructions on how to eat it when they served it to me. I had also messaged the property ahead of time to let them know that I am pescatarian, and when they served everyone else beef during dinner, they served me a friend fish that they made just for me. The location is excellent. It is a 5-minute walk from the Beppu train station, which will get you everywhere you need to go. From here, you can take a bus directly to the Kannawa area, to the Beppu Ropeway, and a shuttle directly to the airport. You can also walk to the waterfront and Matogahama Beach. There are lots of restaurants on the eastern side of the train station.

Nothing!

The room was simply amazing. The staff were very kind and helpful. The location was ideal for our travel and in general everything was really good.

The only thing that we did not really like was the check in and out timing. We spent only one night in the Ryokan and check in was really late and checking out too early in my experience but I think that this is more normal or common in Japan.

Very great Ryokan in all elements. Dinner and Breakfast were super good, all courses were well designed and prepared. Room was big and very comfortable. Private hot spring bath was super good and was very comfortable. Private japanese garden also very nice to have. Overall very recommended for people who come to Beppu.

Room wall was thin and and can have noise from other room.

It's on a quiet one way street, the check in time is strictly 4pm. The facility is charming and well laid out. Booking made an error where we had total 4 adults, but in each room, it only had 1 adult staying for our bfast / dinner included stay. Luckily, the proprietor was able to quickly accommodate the change and was very apologetic on the error (not their fault, it's on booking!). The room faced the beautiful garden and was very spacious with an enclosed terrace to sit and relax. We were there on a cold March day and didn't have to use the heater. They also automatically set up a futon with 2 mattress pads for us foreigners who aren't use to sleeping on them. The indoor and outdoor baths were reservation based for 50min at a time and perfect. The included dinner and bfast was plentiful and delicious with sashimi and a5 wagyu. Definitely a great stay, thank you! The ryokan had helpers who are foreigners attending the local university for their degree, so it was great conversing in English and practicing our Japanese!

Had to lug my suitcase up the stairs for my 2nd floor room, but that's my fault for such a big bag!

This Ryokan was lovely. A quick walk from the train station (less than 5 minutes). The hosts speak English, but tolerated my terrible Japanese. The room was very nice and comfortable. There are 3 onsens to use privately (2 indoors and 1 outdoors). The water was the perfect temperature, and I had no trouble reserving a time to use my preferred room. Because they are private, I assume tattoos would not be any issue. The breakfast was exceptional. For dinner we went to a pizza place that had surprisingly good pizza.

Google maps took us directly there. Without that it would have been a little hard to find the first time.

Very nice Ryokan in Beppu. Its near Beppu station from Eastern side. The room is in traditional style with futon on Tatami. The Ryokan has not too much room, should early book. Surprisingly, some Japanese staffs can speak Thai clearly. So, its easy to communicate for Thai traveller. However, staffs can speak English well. For onsen, there is 3 room: 1 outdoors, 1 indoors and 1 semi-outdoor. We have to book timing on board for using the room only 50 minutes per time to share with other guess. Breakfast is very good meal, staffs take care every guess with mine and careful.

I liked that the you could reserve the onsen for a 50 min period ( they had 2 inside onsen and 1 outdoor onsen). This enabled my niece to enjoy the onsen as she didn't have to deal with strangers as she is not used to public bathing as this was her first time in Japan. Both the indoor and outdoor onsen were great. The staff were very warm, professional and helpful. If you want to experience a ryokan that is very traditional this is the place to go.

Absolutely beautiful, feels very traditional and serene. The private onsen are wonderful and easy to reserve for an hour, and the outdoor bath in the room was exactly what we were looking for. The onsen have mineral buildup from many years, which makes it feel historical and natural. Probably the nicest and most relaxing lodging I’ve ever experienced.

It was expensive so we could only afford to stay one night, but it was worth it
