Firstly DONT worry about the "shared bathroom" because all it means is that the bathroom isnt connected to your bedroom, but you dont share it with anyone lol. The staff explain that its private, ie: you lock it from the inside and you have the entire thing to yourself. Also dont worry about noise. The walls arent made of paper, for all intents and purposes its a standard hotel room just with traditional japanese furnishings. Those were the 2 biggest concerns I had, but Im so glad I just went for it anyway because this is now one of my favourite places to visit. Genuinely Lovely staff, great location, I absolutely loved everything about this cute little traditional Japanese inn. If youre traveling to Kanazawa, chances are its because you want to experience traditional Japan, and if your like me, I didnt just want to stay in another boring b and b, I wanted something a little more fitting, and this place was 100% perfect. I could of happily stayed a week. I honestly miss it already. - dont let the star rating fool you. It may not be a luxury hotel, but thats kind of the point. - Shes got it where it counts, and great value to boot. After a week already in Japan, this was like a refreshing little holiday within a holiday. Id do it again in a heartbeat.
Personally, I loved everything about this little inn.

I am very happy and privileged to stay in a hotel that is maintained like a century-old monument. The carpets are clean and comfortable. The room has a very comfortable aroma of incense, and there is no old mold at all. It feels like entering a charming Japanese restaurant, but you have to check in and stay. The landlord's English skills are very good and communication is smooth. The service is very trustworthy. Even though it is very late to use the hot spring bath, he will still maintain and clean it. Very touched, highly recommended

We very much enjoyed our stay here. We would have extended it a night if we were able to. The 4 futons were comfortable and all set up for us when we arrived. We had the room that looked out over the garden, very cute. When we arrived, they had tea set up for us on the table. We were worried about the shared bathroom but it didn't end up being a concern. The areas were all very clean. We felt rather private, which might have just meant they weren't full and another time might have not felt this way(?) I never had to wait for the sink or toilet or shower/bath. We had a lovely surprise when we saw the two baths. Had we not already been to an onsen we might have been confused with the setup, but we had been to one in Tokyo and thus knew the layout (that you shower and clean up first, and sit on the little stool, etc.. Even my boys enjoyed this aspect of the hotel. It felt nice on our sore bodies. However, again, we never had to wait which was a huge bonus. Everything was clean, the hotel staff were polite. We had no issues. It was in a fun location we discovered. If you turn one way, it's more of a neighborhood with small restaurants and then if you turn the other way it's more of a lively area, like an outdoor mall with shops, restaurants, etc. Two extremes.
I didn't particularly have anything I didn't like. As mentioned, perhaps if it was a crowded time the lack of a private bathroom and bath could have been annoying. But this was not the case for us.

The family that run the property were friendly and helpful. They spoke English which was helpful as our Japanese was not proficient enough! The location was great, and the accommodation was very comfortable. We both enjoyed being able to use the Onsen each day, and even thought her were quiet a few other guests it was never too busy or noisy. The location was great, only a few minutes on the bus from Kanazawa station and walking distance to many tourist attractions. We would definitely stay again.

Murutaya is the best place I've stayed in Japan, it is exceptional, it deserves the highest praise. I am very grateful for the kind attention. The hosts are lovely people and have great pride in offering a comfortable and very pleasant ryokan for the guests enjoyment.
There is nothing to dislike.

The rooms are very esthetic. Tatami mats, nicely painted walls, tea in the room in very nice tea set. Very nice bathropes in Western sizes. Small onsen in the batrooms. Despite there being a less friendly atmosphere than in most of the places where we stayed, this was a great experience.
All of a sudden we had to pay an aditional fee that was mentioned nowhere before. I had said I wanted breakfast via mail, but when we arrived we couldn't book it... later they did arange for it, but there was not a friendly atmosphere.Very few showers for the number of guests.

Murataya Ryokan is centrally located to key sights including Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle and Omicho market. It was clean and the Japanese tatami rooms were lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
It’s a small thing. The laundry hours were from 9 am to 21.30 which means you need to stay in during the day or early evening to do laundry. However given where the washing machine is located, I can understand why they have that rule.

From the moment we arrived, we were met with exceptional hospitality. The serene atmosphere and authentic design of the ryokan offered a perfect experience on our travels. Their traditional breakfast is also worth trying! We wholeheartedly recommend visiting Kanazawa and staying at this ryokan to anyone looking to experience traditional Japanese culture in a welcoming and peaceful setting.

Very affordable small but quality private room for a solo traveller. Futon bed, quality bedding, yukata and a hair dryer in the room. Lovely interior in general and nice small sento type shower room. The down duvet was something to remember! I wish I knew where I could buy one like that for my self.
The location isn’t very central but still very walkable and the buses come close by!

The location is great! Close to so many interesting places. The staff were welcoming and helpful. The Japanese breakfast was beautifully presented and delicious, worth the price if you want to try a traditional breakfast. This ryokan is perfect for those wanting an authentic Japanese experience.
The stairs are too steep and shallow. We had to descend them almost sideways.
