Great location, friendly staff who could speak English, and delicious local food for dinner in renovated historic house. The comfortable bed space offered privacy, had a small fan that really helped with air flow, and had more-than-the-usual height for a capsule-type bunk. The small kitchen area for guest-use is nice for those wanting to prep their own easy breakfast or dinner. The tatami common area provided a nice way to chat with other guests and general visitors to the bar area. The main tourist information office is around the corner and will hold your bags (for free) until 4:30, which was convenient for touring around before the later 5pm check-in time.

Uchikobare is situated in a peaceful little town surrounded by mountains - a nice (and much needed) change from the big cities earlier in our travels. The hostel is a traditional Japanese building with a cozy tatami common area that's great for chilling or socializing and thoughtfully designed dorm rooms that allow every occupant some privacy. Besides the beautiful surroundings, what sets this place apart is the amazing staff. The main man Yama-san is a seriously cool guy with a great sense of humour, cooks delicious food (oishi!!), is great at entertaining guests and does a great job of supporting local business. Mizuki-chan who checked us in is really nice and friendly, lovely to talk to, takes amazing photographs, and has excellent drink recommendations ;) A fantastic place to stay if your in Ehime prefecture!

The Historic District in Uchiko is lovely, and Uchikobare occupies one of those beautifully preserved buildings. Uchiko is a lovely little town on a wonderful island. Shikoku is a treasure.

For me personally, perhaps because I'm getting old, the enclosure for the bunk bed was a bit uncomfortable (getting in or out). Otherwise it was all good.

This is a very relaxed place and everyone was so friendly and helpful, especially the boss!

If you weren’t expecting the bedroom to be in a shared space you might be surprised. It didn’t matter to us and the guests were very quiet and respectful.

Renovated house with the traditional structure. Good location close to stores and attractions. Parking close by. Nice interior, good facilities, friendly staff. Roomy bunk beds with curtains, heating inside. They have items for sale and a bar. Meals are available for an extra charge.

An excellent place to stay in Uchiko. An attractive old merchant house restored to retain its charm yet with modern amenities. The staff are so friendly and helpful, they bent over backwards to assist us locating accommodation over the very difficult New Year's period. The hostel also has a great bar with some very fine local brews, and the available food is delicious. Very highly recommended.

Cosy atmosphere, comfortable bed in private room, lovely staff, great chats with travellers, food and drinks available for tired pilgrims ….without needing to go out on wet nights.

It is a hostel, and it is an old building: so, it may be noisy for some. Also, steep stairs to be expected. Everyone was respectful of the (bed)time when I stayed.

Cozy and welcoming hostel in an older style house, very delightful common area to mingle with other travellers. Cute little bar area as well, featuring locally brewed beverages. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and I really enjoyed the fresh veggies in my meal!

Stylish place in a good location. Staff makes you feel at home right away. The food was amazing, definitely book with dinner, you won't be disappointed.

I'd prefer check-in from 4 pm. 5 pm is a bit late for walking Henro.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Everything was clean and it looks beautiful there. The food is also very delicious! There is a big room where you can also connect with other travellers.
