We stayed here for our anniversary, our second visit, the last being 6 years ago. It's by far my favourite place near Sheffield, Immaculately clean and well maintained while keeping all of its history, every room has something to tell about its historical links to the trade unions and workers it was used by. The food is mostly grown on site so is seasonal and EXCELLENT! Rooms are warm and comfortable and the beds comfortable. The staff are friendly and hard working. All in all it's an absolute gem of a hotel and a refreshing piece of genuine nostalgia in a frantic modern world. I hope this place stays like this forever.

It's such a stunning place!! We've been a couple of times before and would go again. We stayed in a suite for our final 2 nights, which was beautiful. There are lovely walks around the grounds, and the local village too. Breakfast at the Hall was also delicious and all staff were extremely helpful and friendly and would do anything they could to help if you have a question/query.
We stayed for 3 nights and had another room booked initially, which although was clean and tidy, it smelt quite musty and the bathroom was extremely small, so it was hard to move in there. However, staff were extremely helpful and we were given a different, much better room for our last 2 nights. However, the WiFi in the new room was pretty much non-existent which made using your phone and laptop difficult, but the quality of everything else in the room more than made up for lack of WiFi.

Location, history, the room. Food was delish! Hospitality staff around food were fabulous!
The young receptionist that checked us out, (glasses and multiple facial piercings) was quite rude and condescending to me. I was behind a couple, and my partner was taking the bags to the car. She was really smiling and polite with the couple, but then with me she asked stupid questions that she definitely had answers to, was frowning and honestly she was rude. I would just like to say, I’m 35, but look younger so this possibly altered her attitude. However I would like this to be fed back as age should never affect how guests are treated. Thank you.

Lovely location, beautiful gardens and building exterior. Peaceful (despite it being a popular wedding venue) because of the large grounds. Our stay was under sad circumstances so the availability of the large grounds was much appreciated. Our room was spotless and beds were comfortable. Lovely view over the gardens. Staff were polite and friendly.
Interior in need of repair/refurb in places. Sat outside to eat until we noticed drain seemed blocked and was overflowing. Staff suggested it was a regular occurance when we alerted them! Restaurant shut earlier than advertised on the evening we arrived so we ordered food from the bar menu. Not great and expensive for what it was. Breakfast was much better but ants crawling up sugar bowl in restaurant at first table we sat at.

Location and staff. The staff in particular. I spend a lot of time awake during the night, and generally don’t sleep well away from home, the beds were exceptionally comfortable for the time I was asleep, and the room was lovely. The night manager was helpful and although I stopped him a few times from getting on with his job had the time to have small conversations, and took care of our replenishment requests pretty much straight away. Staff are the lifeblood for guests and the staff were exemplary.
Not particularly something that wasn’t liked, and actually expected with such an old imposing property, however there is a musty damp smell in areas, and maybe there an opportunity for a little more upkeep with maintenance and décor internally , however it’s understandable in such a property this is ongoing and continual, and it is a beautiful place, which is well worth a visit

The location and grandeur of the rooms. The staff were excellent and our afternoon tea was scrumptious. Our breakfast the following morning was very good with plenty of choice. The cooked part of it was freshly made and delicious. We would happily stay here again if the need arises. The gardens were also well kept and the wooded area pleasant to walk through giving us good shade in what was a very hot day.
The only thing we would have changed was the opportunity to be able to open our bedroom window (room 15)as mentioned previously it was a hot day. While we had a small fan in the room we couldn’t leave this running all night and it did get somewhat stuffy.

We stayed in the deluxe suite and it was absolutely amazing, the bed was really comfortable and the bath was huge! Even had a separate room with desk facilities and two spare beds. The staff were lovely and very helpful, they really made the stay better. There was an event on during our stay, and couldn’t hear a thing from our room which was great! We went for a walk around the gardens and it was really scenic, even had a few ducks following us around.
The wifi didn’t show as available at all during our two night stay, and there were lots of stairs to reach the deluxe suite, so wouldn’t be suitable for somebody that needed something more accessible.

We stayed over as we were wedding guests. The grounds are well kept and lovely. The room was modern and very clean. Breakfast was very tasty and had a good selection and the staff were friendly and helpful.
The beds weren't the comfiest and a few other guests commented on this. The main hallway was dated and it smelt fusty. Although this is an old hall I feel it could be freshened up and modernised. Drinks in the bar was extremely expensive (a double rum and diet coke was ÂŁ11.80) which i would expect in London not on the outskirts of Sheffield/Barnsley.

Hotel and Gardens lovely, inside a bit tired looking but only to be expected of an old property. Our room had a strange smell, but as soon as it was mentioned, Zara put us into another room, which was lovely and had the most amazing deep bath. Staff couldn't be more helpful and all very friendly. Was lovely chatting to Zara. Breakfast was good, nice selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, pastries and cooked. Only half hour away from the Yorkshire sculpture park, and an hour from York which we visited. Would definitely go back to stay there again.
Don't think there was anything we didn't like apart from children running about shouting at 7am but no fault of the hotel.

Breakfast very good. Room better than adequate, although bathroom tiny. Staff friendly and helpful. Grounds beautiful, a definite bonus. Helpful signs to ballroom (my event). Staff coped well with the high number of guests at our event. The history of the house and its use for union, labor and cooperative movement events is very interesting. I wish they had made more of that, even selling a little souvenir booklet.
The layout of the hotel is very confusing! I would have liked either hand-out maps, or posted You Are Here maps at each corner, or a little guest handbook. The breakfast times we were told, and that were in the Welcome book in the room were not the same. I wish they had updated all the places with that info when it changed. The website mentioned a bus from Sheffield central bus station but didn't warn that it runs very infrequently (one in early morning, several in early evening, nothing in the main part of the day).
